L.J. Smith working on a new Vampire Diaries trilogy set in the book universe

L.J. Smith has written in her blog that she’s finished writing The Return: Midnight, and it’s now going through the editing process. All looks to be on track for publication next year. In other book news, we heard a while back that Ms. Smith was involved with a prequel trilogy, which we all originally assumed was part of the book series, but turned out to be the TV series tie-in, Stefan’s Diaries, that she’s (apparently) consulting on. Well, turns out a new Vampire Diaries trilogy is in the works, starting with Phantom. We have no idea about publication dates, what it’s about or when it will be set (though, given the spoiler at the end of this blog post, it’s likely at least some of it will be set after Midnight), but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we have more information.

Also, I have been finished with Midnight, the final book in the last Vampire Diaries trilogy about a month ago and am waiting (you can imagine how eagerly or maybe–if you’re not an author–you can’t) for the edits. I’ve also signed on for a new trilogy and finished the first book in it, Phantom. So there is more Vampire Diaries in store for readers of those books.

And another little spoilery Vampire Diaries tidbit from the blog post (spoiler blocked because it gives away some of what might happen in Midnight:

And I’ve already bought a fantastic brand new Tiffany and Co. (the real Tiffany’s) gold locket and chain. Now I just have to make up a scene in which Stefan gives Elena the locket (crucial for the new trilogy coming up after Midnight) and we’ll see if we really can cause my computer to implode.

@Lempicka: Yes but the Twilight series has already finished whereas Vampire Diaries hasn’t yet. Besides, it isn’t just Twilight that has the boring and predictable ending. I’ve read countless books that are similar.

The only logical ending imo would be Damon and Elena. To have Stefan and Elena be end game would go completely against everything we have seen Damon and Elena go through in all the books. They’ve had so much development.

Oh and someone is supposed to die in the last book and seeing as it is obviously NOT Stefan, and it won’t be Elena as she has already “died”, my guess will be either Damon or Bonnie which would mean Bamon ISN’T going to be end game. My money’s on mostly Bonnie anyway because as someone said to me, Bonnie’s storylines haven’t been that significant AND she said she was told she would die young.

If yes than someone’s taking a huge risk, because sometimes I get the feeling that our show is a different entity. It would explain why in the synopsis for the second book we have Fell’s Church instead of Mystic Falls, though.

agreed. I mean it would show the power of real love for Stelena but i feel meh about how deeply these two (delena)fell in love to have it gone and right into another relationship. If Damon dies that’s it for me too…I love the others but he makes me really love the books. I just don’t really like Bonnie, nor he and Bonnie. But that’s just an opinion, and how i feel not meant to bash the writer. Success speaks for itself.

Soooooo Glad Stefan and Elena are together forever. As it should be! Kinda getting boring with everything, books and the show turned out to be the Damon book/show. I mean I like Damon but come on it’s is wayyyyyy to much about him. Yawn There are other people you know.

Yes. Midnight will be the final book in The Return Trilogy, and then Phantom will be the first book in a new trilogy.

Don’t worry too much. She didn’t specifically say when this item was given-new book or new series just that it has to be given FOR it. I don’t think it overly means which team will win/ or who will live. it almost does sound like it does, but the wording is very open.

Since the necklace on the UK cover is silver, and LJS said the pendant she just bought is GOLD, I don’t think they are one and the same.

Maybe there is still hope for Dalena. In the first book Elena did the spell to find her future husband, maybe it wasn’t just coincidence that Damon was the one to come in.
Considering that Midnight is no longer the last book in the series, maybe L.J. Smith is putting Elena’s decision off… I suppose we will just have to wait and see.

Well, no offense to anyone, I just dont like Stelena AT ALL in the books. They r too cheesy for my liking.

I dont c Bamon as endgame cuz from what Ive read Damon isnt the type of character to fall quickly all in one book. He cares for Bonnie, but thats it. He isnt like Stefan in that way.

I dont c any other way but for Delena to be endgame. This spoiler could be a way to get some fans hopes up, who knows?

Have to say Im going to be a little pissed if its not Damon and Elena together at the end. If its Stefan at the end with her then everyone should have stopped reading when they got together. Cuz what was the point of dragging it out for so many books. But then again there will be more books so who the hecks knows. I think these books need to be done with already and for Elena to make a choice and stick to it.

What about the thought that he ‘dies’ but then comes back as a phantom in the new trilogy.
I mean the title has to come of some effect at some point. And I can’t imagine her continuing the books without Stefan. And I don’t think the triangle will be present. I think that will be done and dusted by Midnight.

Ya know I heard a lot of ideas who might be on the cover, but let me throw another idea out there. Because the eyes are similar to Elenas, could this be another incarnation of Elena. I do not think this is Bonnie (partly because the cover is a sexy woman with straight hair and Bonnie is described as being cute with curly hair).

I hope that Damon ends up with Elena, and Bonnie ends up with Matt. It would be nice if Stefan found someone (perhaps a friendlier Katherine) to end up with other than Elena. It is a young adult book after all, and I’m hoping for a happy ending

Okay, I have given this a LOT of thought and I hope that this thought has occurred to someone else so I don’t feel alone, but… okay here I go.
You know, the cover isn’t Bonnie, it is quite obviously Caroline. Come on, the descriptions match each other to a \T\.
And here to the REAL heartbreaking stuff…
fhas the thought occurred to anyone that STEFAN might be the one who dies? You know, it’s a weird thought, and a cruel one at that, but maybe, just MAYBE LJS is writing the \Stefan Trilogy\ because it could be an early apology of letting stefan go! Maybe he returns as a phantom, maybe not, but in this world there are infinite possibilities, you never really know!
And just because he is giving her a necklace does NOT mean that they will be together. it just doesn’t. I think that all the build up that Damon and Elena has gotten… well, Elena always chooses Stefan, it was always him, but I think it’s time she acknowledges her feelings for Damon and truly sees that they were the ones meant for each other.
Everyone is saying that Elena and Stefan are soul mates. I agree. But soul mates are two people who come together, and they are just immediately in love, like SE, but the connection could be temporary. The thing is, a person could have an INFINITE amount of soul mates, its true, the relationship could be forever, OR it could be only a month. A soul mate is someone who helps you on the course of your life and the way it is supposed to be… that is where Stefan comes in for his bigger part. I do NOT think that SE will be endgame. Stefan was Elena’s soul mate, because he brought her to her next part in life, he brought her to Damon (or, well, Damon kinda tagged along with Stefan making his life a living hell, but still, without Stefan, Damon wouldn’t be there). Damon is not Elena’s soul mate, he is her TWIN FLAME.
When they get together there is heat and passion, they have infinite problems but they have met in previous incarnates of themselves and had the relationship not work (katherine much?! i know she isn’t a pre incarnate of Elena, I like to pretend though). this is a real thing, people, I am not lying. Damon is supposed to be with Elena, and I say that being someones \little bird\ is NOTHING in comparison (at least to me) to being someone’s \PRINCESS OF DARKNESS\
Sure, Damon&Bonnie is cute, (in the show it just SICKENS me, but thats beside the point) but I see his caring for her only that, caring for her. He has made her a stronger person, (although she is still moderately weak… OKAY very weak) and that is great, but that is NO reason for them to be endgame. I do not see it. at all. never. no. why? because, he loves ELENA, and he is not someone who falls fast, and his \love\ for Bonnie must have been over the span of, like, a weekend (sorry, cheap shot, that was mean of me, sorry). I also believe that Bonnie is going to die. That plot has been dragged on from the first book and DAMN IT I want to see them put it into play. And NO not as a vampire. eugh.
Bonnie would be the cheap ending that Damon DOESN’T DESERVE. it is DAMONS turn to be number one for HIS number one. and that is Elena. End of story…
whew… man am i worn out after that, hehe.

Oh snap! It’s Bonnie on the cover! yes please, more Bonnie. She rocks in the book. Who ever said someone told them Bonnie isn’t a big essential in the book doesn’t know what they’re talking about. How about you don’t take words of some Delena’s fan and actually read the books yourself. I have, and Bonnie is the only and a powerful witch, she helped them out plenty of time. And yes, Bonnie thinks she might die young, but some of us think that she might die young as in being turned into a vampire.

And someone saying Bamon has no chemistry, well have you read the books? In the later books, they have amazing stuff going on together, just pure on cute. You might not like how it is in tv world, but the books are what matter (if they’re gonna stick to the books). Plus, the author even wrote a cute little story about how Damon met Bonnie. It’s on her official site.

I care more about the endgame of the books than the TV show, so seeing Bonnie as the character on the cover I’m hoping for some amazing Bonnie’s moments and some Bamon. CAN’T WAIT FOR THE BOOK!

(spoilering out just in case)

Delena fans, you are depressing me. Read my lips. You have NO REASON to think that Stefan will win the girl. But this is a series, and with three new books coming you can understand that I can’t have Elena choose one of the boys just yet. There wouldn’t be much of a love triangle left if I did.

So, looks like all the speculation is for no reason since Elena doesn’t definitively wind up with either brother.

I’m really just looking forward to more of the Vampire Diaries universe; no matter how the story ends it’ll be sad when it does. Whether it’s Damon and Elena, Stefan and Elena, Bonnie and Damon or whoever I’m just looking forward to seeing what other ideas LJS has in store!

Its Caroline on the Cover coz she’s Got: Green, Cat – like Eyes and Auburn, Straight hair where as Bonnie has Dark Chocolate Eyes and Curly Red Hair and A small, heart shaped face soooo yea and if you look up: Bonnie McCullough – The Vampire Diaries , On Google Images you’ll see the cover of a book thats got a Half – Face thingy and its Bonnie and there’s a MASSIVE difference so yea, its just annoying that everyone thinks its Bonnie and No one pays attention to the Details.

OK I red this sop=mewhere can’t remeber where but it’s awsum news (sorta) one of the main charecters will die in the end of The Return: Midnight and from what I heard it will not be either Damon, Bonnie or Matt?
My guess is that it could be Meredith, Caroline or Tyler because theres also another book that L.J Smith is writing > There is a new book coming out after The Return Midnight called Hunters its also a trilogy of The Vampire Diaries and the book is about Elena and Stefan going to College or something like that, HOPE IT HELPS! :)

I totally agree with what you are saying. I’m starting to get really angry at the haters of Bamon. If they read the books, then they will understand how much chemistry. I personal think that Damon and Bonnie have more chemistry than anyone else in the books.

[/spoiler] I mean they kissed, twice. He save her life, when Bonnie kissed Damon he didn’t pull away. Also in a chapter which was deleted from the book where they go to the dark dimension. Damon was the one who kissed Bonnie. [/spoiler]

Even in the show, I can see that they have chemistry, not as strong as in the books, but there is a little. I can see something happening in season 3.

I’m a big Bonnie and Damon fan, ever since I have read the books, and even in the show. They would make a powerful couple and if they got together in the show, I can see that the viewers will fall in love with them, I mean Bonnie and Damon will be teasing each other loads. They understand each other, in the books and show.

In the books, Bonnie knows that deep down, Damon isn’t the horrible guy everyone thinks he is. Damon cares deeply for Bonnie.
