Thanks to Jen for letting us know that there’s a listing for Vampire Diaries: Midnight (the third book in the Return Trilogy) up on Amazon.co.uk now. We advise ignoring the dates (July 2010 seems highly unlikely unless the publishing world has harnessed time itself, given that book two, Shadow Souls, isn’t out until March, 2010), but the listing comes complete with what has to be one of the most profoundly spoilery summaries out there. I just don’t see Damon being a human. He never seemed to have a problem with what he was and I like that about him. It’s totaly parallel to Stefan and Edward who are always naging about how they hate themselves and wish they were human.

Holy shit. That is the most spoiler-ific blurb I have ever seen. Thank you spoiling THE ENTIRE second book for us, publishers. And I do not like this thing with Damon. Hopefully he becomes a vampire again somehow, like Sylar losing his powers in Heroes season 2 but regaining them at the end. Although it might make it easier for Damon and Bonnie to have a happy ending…that’s really the only ship I particularly care about (sorry Elena/Stefan). Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Hmmm… I don’t like this. Damon a mortal? One of the reasons I love his character is the fact that he actually *enjoys* being a vampire. There are too many mopey emo vampires who do nothing but lament the fact of who they are.
Oh well, I’m still going to be buying it regardless. I <3 TVD. :D

I don’t think he would. He felt guilty enough when he damned his brother the first time around. Stefan would probably see being human as a Good Thing for Damon and tell him to enjoy his nice, new, clean slate.

Haha, me too. LJS does have a penchant for Damon/bad boys more so, but she usually doesn’t put favoritism (thank goodness) in on who gets paired with who as she seems to love writing DB too.
I guess it really comes to their interactions in this second book (which I hope is an improvement from that last one). LJS mentioned several times that she’s moving forward with DE becoming more mutual romantically. And of course we’ll have to see if DB develops as all to really determine anything. I admit I like DB along with DE/SE, but all we got is Bonnie’s attraction to him, understanding (which was then flipped in the last book somewhat) and Damon’s fondness for Bonnie.

Ugh I hope not. Damon being all noble at the end is not the way to go. I loved how the third book ended. We always typically see the other guy die, but in TVD, it was Elena/person in the middle that died. The ending wasn’t necessarily happily ever after–though very very bittersweet.

I do not want Damon to be a mortal :( I hope that its just temporary and he will get to be changed back somehow. Mabye another vampire can just turn him back, such as Stefan who now owes him one for geting him out of the dark dimmension

AAAHHHH. Fun times!
Pure speculation, but I agree that Damon really has to die at this point. I mean, this whole new trilogy is about his redemption, right? (At least, that is the idea I get from reading interviews with LJS) And, you know, in the realm of fiction, most redemptions do end in death in the form of a heroic sacrifice or something. I guess becoming human could be Damon’s sacrifice but that does not seem as poignant as the other option.
That being said, i would still love a Elena/Damon hookup in these last books. I always seem to root for the bad boy who gets the best lines. (Sorry, Stefan)

Since LJS believes in happy endings, i don’t think Damon will die.. but maybe this becoming mortal thing will make him realize that he too, deserves the happiness that Stefan and Elena have together – in the form of Bonnie. ;)

In Dark Reunion Meredith mentions he’s over in Russia doing research on the use of psychics during the Cold War. Given the Return is set only a week after that, he’s probably still there.

I really do not like the idea of Damon becoming a mortal. Not sure what Smith is trying to do here, or where this idea will lead. Maybe it’ll make it easier to pair off Damon and Bonnie? Or Damon and Elena?…hmm, i’m drawing a blank. Perhaps this needs a little more reflection….
Also thought I’d mention that I’m not a fan of Damon and Bonnie either (I think someone mentioned being the only one? don’t worry, your not alone…) Just never got into it, there isn’t enough there to convince me.
Just thought I’d mention something I noticed right away when reading this. If Smith does take the route of “Damon’s a human now so he should end up with Elena because he can live a happy mortal life with her. They can have a normal future…yada yada, he has something that Stefan can’t give to her.” Did anyone else get bad Twilight love triangle flashbacks? Human or Vampire? Who can give her the best future?Hmm…maybe it was just me and my screwy little brain, just thought I’d bring that up. Although it is my deepest displeasure to drag Twilight into any conversation…

I am an avid Stefan supporter, true love explanation. Damon and Bonnie together would be a simple solution to him not being unhappy but doesn’t seem right although, would be cute. I love TVD and can’t wait to read the following book. Damon being human isn’t fair because it what Stefan has always want, except Damon seems to always be 2nd best to him so its like payback. hes getting what Stefan always wanted. but because Damon has realized humans are not so bad I don’t think he will be disapointed. I guess we have to wait and see.

OMG!! I don’t know what was going on with LJS if she actually made Damon a human.. He likes being a vampire, he enjoys being better than everyone else. This isn’t a good thing for him…
I don’t think elena is just going to go to stefan… I mean if Damon sacrificed something that he loved for her (being a vampire) I dont think she’s just going to be like “well I have my man back you can go to hell…”
Besides on the spoiler for book 6 it shows that elena is starting to understand damon and that he’s opening up to her.
Bonnie and Damon? I dont think so… remember the way he thought of he: “my little bird”? it shows fondness the kind of fondness you’d have for a baby sister of a cousin… not a girlfriend.
I agree, know the foxes there’s probably a catch to this whole Damon is human thing. Besides I don’t think they would have published this if they didn’t have a bigger fish to fry… so in book 7 damon being human is probably one of the less important parts, otherwise they wouldn’t have realesed it…

I legit just read all five books in less than a week and now googling everything I can find on the sixth and yuckkkk can’t believe I just ruined the ending for myself. ehh they warn you about spoilers
but… WHY IS DAMON A MORTAL? Unless we’re missing something and he decides he wants it, chooses it, or goes back to being a vampire by book seven.. does anyone else think that’s realllllly unfair to do to him?
I love Damon and Elena really I think they’re awesome together… plus Damon’s kind of hot.. but I do love Stefan and he is a genuinely good character, I don’t think the author would just leave him hanging at the end and hurt him like that because.. it’s kind of ridiculous that I’m saying so.. but it’d be so cruel

I just wanted to mention something that I think some may have missed. About 3/4 of the way down someone (don’t remember who-sorry) mentioned a similarity to the Twilight love triangle. I wanted to say that Vampire Diaries was published way before Stephenie put pen to paper. TVD was around first and any similarities should be made to TVD not the other way around. In all fairness to LJS.

OMG, You Damon/Bonnie fans are killing me. There has not been enough chemistry and or evidence of that pairing. The whole theme of the books is a Love Triangle between Damon/Elena/Stefan how from that do you come up with Bonnie and Damon. Everything I’ve read of the spoilers goes right along with the original books which suggest Damon is in love with Elena and L.J.S. herself says Elena is going to fall in love with Damon in Shadow Souls why go through making them love each other just to throw Damon with Bonnie that would be a WTF moment if I ever saw one. Bonnie belongs with Matt and as much as you S/E shippers may not like it Damon and Elena belong together they definitely have more in common. Not that I dislike Stefan I actually like him but BORING. JMO
