Category: Books, TV Series

We’re getting quite a few Twilight fans popping over here (hi guys!), and there are some misunderstandings going on between fans. We think the time has come to clear the air a bit.

First of all, I like Twilight. I loved the first book especially, and really hope that Midnight Sun gets written and published. If anyone was offended by my crack about sparkles in the Vampire Lore 101 article, I apologise. It was never meant to be a dig at Twilight, only a crack at being asked if Vampire Diaries vampires sparkle on a pretty regular basis.

Now, to address a few issues that Twilight fans and Vampire Diaries fans should both be aware of.

Are the Vampire Diaries copying Twilight?
No. The Vampire Diaries series was published in 1991-92, Twilight was published in 2005. The dates speak for themselves.

Does Twilight copy the Vampire Diaries, then?
Again, no. Vee and I certainly don’t think so. Yes, there are some minor similarities, but most of those are themes that you can find in any vampire romance novel in this day and age. The important thing is that the characters, major events, and basic underlying story of each series are completely different. More obviously (as the Vampire Lore 101 article illustrates) the vampires are completely different in both series. Twilight vampires are certainly nothing like Vampire Diaries vampires. The only thing they have in common as a species is that they need to drink blood to survive, and that’s a standard feature in all vampire literature.

The Vampire Diaries TV series is cashing in on the success of Twilight!
Quite possibly, yes. Does that matter? The producers and the CW have recognised from the success of Twilight that there is a market for this stuff. The success of Twilight has shown that people want more vampire romance on their screens, and so this TV series will give them that. It won’t be copying Twilight. The stories are different. The idea is that fans of Twilight might like to give this TV series a shot because they would like to see other things in the same genre. It’s not trying to be Twilight, it’s just capitalising on an interested market and possible ready-made fanbase. Give it a chance, Twilight fans. Please don’t knock it just because it’s been given the go due to the success of Twilight.

Nina Dobrev is brunette – they’re making Elena look like Bella!
I find it highly unlikely they chose Nina Dobrev for the role just because she was brunette and they could have their own Bella. Isn’t it more logical that she auditioned for the role and they chose her because they liked her portrayal of Elena? Bella and Elena both being brunette is purely coincidental. And, hey, brown is a very common hair colour – it’s a dominant gene for a start, so that ensures that brunettes are in a majority. The important thing is that Elena and Bella are entirely different personalities. Even though they’re making Elena more accessible in the TV series, she’s still very different to Bella. Bella was the shy loner, Elena the queen of her high school. Two completely different character types.

Now, people are allowed their opinions on each of the books. We don’t expect Twilight fans to love the Vampire Diaries, and vice versa. Some people like both, some only one. It’s just one of those things that happens because people have differing tastes. However, it would be nice if fans of each series didn’t snipe at each other so much, and that includes slamming the series you don’t like in the comments on this blog. Please, be nice to each other, because it makes for a much more pleasant discussion.

Oh no, dude! Nothing and nobody beats Prince Phillip!!! NOTHING! Vampires can’t compare to Disney. Plus, vamps aren’t even some of the coolest mythological creatures. That would be mermaids and werewolves. Although I do enjoy vampire stuff. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. :)

    hey there ^^.

well, the only thing I find wrong here is the fact Elena in the show is brunnett – but what’s that got to do with twilight? nothing! The only thing similar between the characters is only seen in Bonnies slight resemblance with Alice because of the psychic powers, Matts resemblance with Mike Newton (even though Matt is way better than Mike), and the same diet and strong love for both their girls Stefan and Edward have.

I don’t care xD I like both Twilight and Vampire Diaries books (and Sookie Stackhouses’ too, from True Blood…) – After all, in their own ways, they’re just vampire stories and I love vampire stories Muahaha ;D

Love, my dear fan fellas :D

OKAY OKAY, lets burry the hatchett !!! I would like to add that fueding amongst each other is taken as dishonorable to the vamprye society. People have to keep in mind that UNITED together we can all be a strong force and divided we all easily fall. Ignorance may be bliss but it can also be soo distructful. I am an (ELDER) haha meaning yes OLDER person who is a fan of vampyres of every kind. So when I read all 4 books of TWILIGHT I was completely astonished at how good the series was written and the movie made it that much more of a great series. I have finished the books on Vampire Diaries and I absolutely love these books as well. I see many many differences in the styles of writings and how the whole stories of each series differ. I dont try to find similarities is the key. I just read them and enjoy what great gifts these authors have given us to the vampire world and to the mainstream. I love the fact that vampirism is becoming so strong and more open that it should be celebrated with each book written regardless of plots in stories, characters or anything else. All these authors are not intending to out do one another, they are giving us thier minds and talents into a world of vampiryes in their point of view and we should all embrace that and enjoy it..

I love The Twilight Saga.. andI love The Vampire Diaries.. I think with Twilight being so popular it helped launch The Vampire Diaries TV Series.. I can not wait for the 1st ep.. I am going to have a Vampire Diaries Premier Party ( I know I am a dork) I have been a fan of The Vamprie Daries since the first book was published in 1991. I dont want to wait till 2010 for the next book. But I will if I have to. I have high hopes for the TV series.. but they need to nip the whole she MAY be with Damon thing in the bud right now.. its STEFEN ALL THE WAY. ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL..

Seriously, both of the books or great (or horrible, depending on who you ask). Ultimately, though, it is a matter of opinion and no one is right or wrong. The Vampire Diaries were certainly not copied from Twilight, as it has been said before they came out in different decades. There are common themes throughout all literature, particularly when you are reading within the same genre of books. It is possible to read and love more than one vampire-human love story. The books are entirely different in almost every way, and the similarities they do share are easily explainable. There is really no sense in arguing about it at all, and if people would stop and just read the books they may discover something in them that they love as well.

im not bashing on the character of elena but ive read the book series three times… but isnt elena supposed ?
to be blond hair and blue eyes not brunette and brown eyes?

  • Aline

Im a teen who have read both series and i honestly think they didnt copy each other and that Vampire Diaries is better than Twilight—the plot has more danger and adventure plus the characters varied from really evil ones to really loyal friends–
the story has a touch of magic too…
Twilight cant be compare to Vampire Diaries because theyre different in many ways if the girl whos playing Elana looks more like Bella from Twilight it doesnt means the story in the movie will be the same^_^

Well being a Vapire Liturature buff I find it humorous and annoying that these Tweenyboppers think they are the only candy store on the block. As I am nearly as old as some of the Characters…..pun intended it shows immaturaty by not knowing your audience nor background of what you are infact obsessing about. Vampire stories have been around for centuries. The love component, sexuality and lore are what have made them facinating. This is something that teenagers know no deepth. But I do understand wanting something so much to be organic and yours. What I find facinating about both sides of this fence is the personalities of the characters and eye color, and ethnicity are minor bariers to breakdown. Just look howmany versions of Dracula there are. Each has its own take. Just as in Liturature and mythology you will find a different take in different cultures and by different writters. That is what makes each one ORIGINAL! Storytelling is not a new concept so lets just enjoy the stories and not degrade it by picking it appart! Like or don’t….No one is forcing you to watch.
