The Vampire Diaries TV: Damon mocking Stefan's journal, oh noes!We thought we’d point out some details that caught our eye in all of the recently released footage from The Vampire Diaries pilot. How about you guys – notice anything significant? Speculate away!

We’ve lumped the more spoilery stuff near the end, so here’s the Obligatory Spoiler Warning for those who’d rather not make any possible connection between plot points in the books and the TV series.

  • The names of Elena’s parents: Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers Gilbert. Elena’s parents are never named in the books, so this is a special bit of canon unique to the TV series. (Intentional Batman and Bionic Woman references? Probably not, but we’re geeks – sue us.) Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert, we might add, died on May 23, 2009 – yep, yesterday, and two days after the upfronts.
  • We note a distinct lack of Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena and Jeremy’s aunt, Jenna Moyer (Sara Canning), in any of the footage. And though it’s not so notable that Mr. Tanner didn’t make it in there, we’re thinking of you, Ben “OMG, it’s Cowboy from jPod!” Ayres fans.
  • Why, hello there, significant glance between Stefan and Matt.

  • Alright, we’re getting more spoilery now.

  • In the second promo trailer, you can hear a male voice say to Stefan, “You said you had it under control.” Is this Pete (was Whitmore – will this be changed to Salvatore, too?), who runs the boarding house? We’ve been speculating that this new character may be a Mystic Falls native/descendant of Stefan and Damon – but it’s just that: speculation. The actor playing Pete is still unknown, though we have a theory on that.
  • In the flashes of Brooke and Darren’s roadside adventure, you can see a large silver ring on the hand that grabs Darren by the throat. The easy assumption is that it’s Damon, but we don’t know if we’re entirely convinced of that.
  • Speaking of the rings – those are some hefty ones. We’ve analyzed the promo photos of Stefan to see if we can spot any tell-tale lumps beneath the t-shirt and have so far come up empty-handed. Also, black leather jackets – thank you very much. Though we await the inevitable sweater.
  • Stefan’s room at the boarding house? Not quite what we pictured his lonely attic room to be like, but in many ways very Stefan. Lots of books, lots of natural objects and random bits of statuary and knick knacks – horses, cars, a jar of marbles, porcupine quills (?), globes, a griffin, pheasant feathers, and a few clocks (which makes us laugh in that “Aww, Stefan, why are you torturing yourself with clocks?” kind of way). And one of my personal favorite details is the typewriter right next to the Mac monitor. (Which, of course, makes Damon the PC in this equation. Though Red notes this: This is either a home base for him that he leaves intact and he’s been away for a while – which explains the ‘I should never have come home thing’ – or he’s been back a couple of months and pulled things out of storage. Actually, that explains the typewriter – the computer is probably brand new for this return home and he doesn’t have anywhere else to put the typewriter.) Uber-fans will note a few things of significance: there is a short blade/dagger sheathed at the very front of the desk, a balcony, and we’re assuming somewhere in here is an easy access point to the roof, considering the opening shot of the first teaser reel. There’s something very New World about this entire set, with a few small but significant Old World touches. Has us very curious. Big props (ha!) to the set designers because it’s beautiful and lots of fun to stare at – we just wish we had an even higher-res version so we could read the book titles. And to think this is only a small portion of the room; you can see other angles in the Stefan/Damon scene from the initial teaser reel. We’ve noted some sort of silvery white tree branch in a vase on a dresser.
  • Stefan and Elena duck away from the party to have a chat – on a bridge. A large footbridge. Way too narrow for a car, but significant nonetheless. Because we all know about The Vampire Diaries and bridges. Though we’re dead curious if the river flowing beneath is Drowning Creek (or an incarnation of) – which could feasibly flow from the falls. Again, we wish for a higher resolution so we could suss whether Steve the Homeless Guy is sleeping under there somewhere.

    I’m glad to know I’m not the only one squinting at my computer screen and pausing these clips ad nauseum. Here come a few spoilers;

Specifically about the tree branch, my only significant thought is that it could be from the, or a similar tree spotlighted in Kathrine’s demise. Perhaps they’ve changed the Lemon Tree to a Birch. If this area is Stefan and Damon’s original home, there’s a good chance that tree may still be around, though huge and hulking. One could assume upon his return, Stefan may have nicked a piece in an effort to remind himself to remain vigilant in being tortured and alone, lest history repeat itself. ;)

We were thinking more along the lines of Klaus and and White Ash. ;)

One could assume upon his return, Stefan may have nicked a piece in an effort to remind himself to remain vigilant in being tortured and alone, lest history repeat itself. ;)

That’s such a lovely, tragic sentiment. I really should not be snickering as much as I am. ;)

  • Pretty.Blush

Ah, thinking about the White Ash, It’s possible. My only thought is that in the books, Stefan and company had to research what specific wood could do any damage to Klaus out of necessity with the threat of him before them, as any wood will do against most vampires, but to encounter an Old One such as Klaus who needed a special touch, they needed more information.

I am assuming at this point in the story line, Stefan may not be thinking to stock up against insane Germanic hobo vampire-gods. Quite foolish on his part I’d say!

And I’m glad, I was snickering whilst writing it. ;D

This is true. I’m thinking it might just be a little reference for book fans to pick up on rather than a real plot point or actual white ash. Kind of like when Damon fondles that chunk of lapis?

These Germanic hobo vampire-gods… kind of like the Spanish Inquisition. No one ever expects them. ;)

…or it could just be a pretty tree branch in a vase. ;)

PFFFFT! Where’s the fun in that? We have to over-analyse everything! ;)

Hey everyone! I’ve been a fan of the series for over two years but never actually went on a fan website, I know I’m stupid :) but I heard about it becmoing a tv show or movie and I totally freaked. So I just want to clarify that the Vampire Diaries is a televison show correct? Not a movie? Personally I would have liked to see it as a movie but at least tv goes on forever :)

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net Vee

Yes, ma’am – it’ll be airing this Fall on the CW Network, Thursdays at 8pm, before Supernatural.

Here are the book titles that I could make out:

‘Ghost Writer’ (top of the stack under the large pebble like rock) and ‘In Search of America’ (bottom of the same stack). All the others are too hard to make out I’m afraid.

  • http://www.redster.org.uk/ Red

Wow… that’s some impressive eyesight you’ve got going there. :D Thanks for pointing those out.

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net Vee

“Ghost Writer” as in Philip Roth’s “Ghost Writer”? I’d undoubtedly be impressed if the set decorator chose titles specifically – though I find it unlikely – but Stefan reading Philip Roth makes me laugh uncontrollably. Oh, the self-loathing – it buuuuuurns!

  • Desiree

Okay so I have noticed some changes to the TV show compared to the book…somethings i can handle like her being a brunette instead of blonde and that they made her have a brother instead of a sister but one thing i cant understand is why there is no Merideth…there is a Bonnie so why leave her out….I think she plays a critical role in the book and that she should be in there. If anyone knows any information could they please respond to me. Thank you.

Hi, Desiree. You’re not the only one who’s been asking about Meredith lately. Here’s a link to some good news for you. http://www.vampire-diaries.net/books/wheres-meredith-the-sequel/

  • Desiree

Thank you very much for the speedy reply. That has relieved me of my where’s merideth freakout lol.

I first read the series about 17 years ago. . . I know scary thought, huh? I’ve been waiting since forever for this to become a movie. Vampire Diaries, is the first thing I thought of when I heard about the Twilight series. I have a young daugter than is into Twilight, too. I am afraid to watch this series because the differences are already too noticable. Why not blonde, seriously? I guess I can look forward to the two new books, they will be awesome.

The hair color really bothers me for some reason. Would it really be that hard to dye her hair or give her a wig? Really? Her looks play such an important role in the books, and I’m just confused as to why they would change them?
