kind of late to be commenting on this; but i must say i adore the tv series; loved the books as well. the tie-ins are kind of funny though, but anything with ian somerhalder on it looks amazing.

the british versions . . . well.
i won’t even mention it.

the second one is prettty good though; but it TOO reminds me of something whitish tainted with red *cough cough* NM cover.

Ah crap. I have the stupid aplle version. I WANT THE IAN SOMERHALDER VERSION :o( *is cross*. I know. So fickle. But i don’t like that they used the apple either. And yes, I can see how it might confuse some that Elena is blonde in the book but Brunette on the cover.

I’m also glad that theyre making Elena less queen bee in the show, a real person. I didnt much like the Elena in the book…

No one is bashing Twilight here. The concern with the apple on the TVD cover is we don’t want it to look like it’s copying Twilight. No one has said there’s anything wrong with the Twilight cover, so you need to chill out before you keep posting rants in defence of Twilight.

Well, I don’t like the re-use of the apple, due to Twilight connotations (it’s bad enough that people don’t even think before calling TVD “a Twilight rip-off” – they don’t need any “help”), the reasoning towards the bite makes a whole lot of sense. I do like the candle, though – innocence bleeding red blood.

And for the tie-ins, they’re not bad at all. I have seen much, much worse tie-ins (first pops to mind is Twilight and it’s grey-skinned Edward and a Bella that looks twelve).

Red, you should be one of those psyche profilers. What you wrote about Matt was far more impressive for an essay. That was more like an indepth psychological profile. ;-)

I’m such a dork when it comes to anime. I discovered Gundam after Sailormoon on the Cartoon Network years ago. I bought the mangas, recorded the tv episodes on VHS tapes (to the young generation, there wasn’t dvds back then:p), and even bought the cd pack with the original Gundam Wing music. I used to hound the message boards if anyone was a Relena/Heero shipper. I loathed that stalker, lol.

I can recall several years ago when vampires were the IT fad; everybody wore the goth makeup. Pasty white base makeup, black nail polish, black lipstick, and heavy black eyeliner.I even remember when the Sweet Valley High series had a vampire trilogy at the time. The characters wore heavy goth makeup. I”m glad we’ve all moved on from that caricature of vamprysm.
Still though. I work part-time on the weekends at Barnes and Noble. If I see someone actually buy those tv books, I’m going to tell them it’s Meredith on the cover. :p Just like my coworker.

You had to know I’d say something about the hair: IT MATTERS. ;) I can only imagine what a newbie picking up the books will think. “Cool and blond and slender? That’s not what’s on the cover! Maybe she’ll turn goth later?”

Does anyone else think it’d be nice if they’d put her in white linen shorts and a pale rose top and a hair ribbon on the show? I will be shocked if they do, but Elena’s hair ribbons are EVEN MORE IMPORTANT than her hair. /tangent

I’m deeply sorry about the UK covers. Egad!

Aww, my poor, neglected website. I meant to do so much with it, and then things exploded here and I haven’t been able to. XD Likely you got there because I linked to my Matt essay on there? And WOOHOO! Another Gundam Wing fan! I have a huge soft spot for Gundam Wing, especially Heero and Duo. In fact, I might well re-watch the entire series while I wait for TVD to air in September. Should keep me entertained. :D

Wow… those covers (of which we shall not speak) look a bit like hack photoshop jobs. Like on cooking shows, where they can’t show the brand label of a can of tuna or whatever that they’re using, but instead slap on a graphic that is clearly ripped off of Chicken of the Sea, only with a different name. The font is also a bit too Comic Sans / Flintstones for my tastes.

Now if they had a big ol’ tuna on the cover…. that’d be another story.

The TV-tie in ones are pretty good, I think. At first, I was a bit bothered by the blond/blue thing (not b/c I really care anymore, but b/c it’s just weird when the cover contradicts the book), but now I see that if they can’t really get around it. If a contradictory cover means greater cross-promotion between the novels and the show, then so be it!

Red, you are the coolest!!! I was clicking on links on the site, and saw the one about Matt Honeycutt. It somehow clicked onto your website, so, I, be nosy, stalked around. You love Gundam Wing! Everybody that I have talked to about that show is like,”What’s a gundam?” When I inform them, they’re like,”But you’re a girl.” :-/. Heero and Duo are awesome!
Ahem..now back to topic. One of my co-workers who just got interested in TVD just asked me why Meredith was on the cover. @_@ Apparently, I forgot to inform her about the physical differences of the show/book series.

See, that makes perfect sense to me – and there’s the whole symbolism of the fact that the apple of Bella’s blood is there to tempt Edward, yet he manages to resist it. I’d love it if they’d put that much thought into using it for the TVD cover, but I have this nagging suspicion that they went with the Twilight look-a-like angle rather than the awesome symbolism angle. Thus it remains to me the apple (of which we shall not speak). Though I’m doing an awful lot of speaking about it… XD

Despite where I’ve seen that apple before grumbles*, I do see a symbolism that does fit with TVD. On the Twilight series, the apple is never bitten. Therefore, those veggie loving vampires do not feed on blood on humans. The apple is considered the forbidden fruit of biblical lore. So, human blood/apple is untouchable, forbidden to eat.
Then there’s our Vampires. They drink blood happily or sulk about it. So, the apple is bitten.
I read too much into things. :-/

I kind’ve think it’ll be odd for the new readers of the book because of the actors on the cover. I don’t want to bring up the blue-eyed, blond-haired Elena again but that’s how she is described in the book. It will be contradicted by the cover a little bit. FYI: the whole hair thing doesn’t bother me for the show. Love it actually.
