Book news! Feels like ages since we last posted any about the book series, and to make up for that we have a whole load of new book covers from various countries for you to peruse.
First up, the cover for Nightfall in Brazil has been revealed, and the publishers, Galera Record, will also be releasing a rather nifty Vampire Diaries boxset containing books 1 – 4. There isn’t a release date for either product yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear something. Update: Nightfall is due in October, and the boxset in November. Thanks, Isabella!

L.J. Smith has written in her blog that she’s finished writing The Return: Midnight, and it’s now going through the editing process. All looks to be on track for publication next year. In other book news, we heard a while back that Ms. Smith was involved with a prequel trilogy, which we all originally assumed was part of the book series, but turned out to be the TV series tie-in, Stefan’s Diaries, that she’s (apparently) consulting on. Well, turns out a new Vampire Diaries trilogy is in the works, starting with Phantom. We have no idea about publication dates, what it’s about or when it will be set (though, given the spoiler at the end of this blog post, it’s likely at least some of it will be set after Midnight), but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we have more information.
Also, I have been finished with Midnight, the final book in the last Vampire Diaries trilogy about a month ago and am waiting (you can imagine how eagerly or maybe–if you’re not an author–you can’t) for the edits. I’ve also signed on for a new trilogy and finished the first book in it, Phantom. So there is more Vampire Diaries in store for readers of those books.
And another little spoilery Vampire Diaries tidbit from the blog post (spoiler blocked because it gives away some of what might happen in Midnight:
And I’ve already bought a fantastic brand new Tiffany and Co. (the real Tiffany’s) gold locket and chain. Now I just have to make up a scene in which Stefan gives Elena the locket (crucial for the new trilogy coming up after Midnight) and we’ll see if we really can cause my computer to implode.
(Thanks to Ayna for the heads up!)

We got the publication dates for the new Vampire Diaries TV series tie-in books a couple of days ago, and now we have the synopses up for for all three books in the Stefan’s Diaries series. The information comes from the UK publishers, Hodder & Stoughton, via Amazon UK. The first book (Origins) looks to be a novelization of what we know from flashbacks from season one, hopefully with some more tidbits thrown in. Books two and three (Bloodlust and The Craving) are all-new stories set in the past, and the synopses are behind a spoiler cut for those of you who’d prefer to wait to be surprised. The big question we have is whether these stories will be part of the official TV series canon or not.
Now, if we could just get some covers to ogle, we’d be happy bunnies.
EDIT: Amazon US listings are currently unavailable – hopefully Amazon will get it sorted soon.
Book One: Origins
Set during the Civil War, against a backdrop of grand estates, unimaginable riches, and deadly secrets, three teenagers in Mystic Falls, Virginia enter a torrid love triangle that will span eternity.
Brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore are inseparable until they meet Katherine, a stunning, mysterious woman who turns their world upside down. Siblings turned rivals, the Salvatores compete for Katherine’s affection, only to discover that her sumptuous silk dresses and glittering gems hide a terrible secret: Katherine is a vampire. And she is intent on turning them into vampires so they can live together—forever.

In addition, HarperCollins has updated their listings with titles for each volume in the Stefan’s Diaries trilogy – #1: Origins, #2: Bloodlust, and #3: The Craving. (This is the prequel trilogy based on the TV series.)
UPDATE: We should also note that Stefan’s Diaries: The Craving has a new release date: May 3, 2011. (We previously posted the release dates for all three books.)

Please don’t kill the messenger, folks – Midnight, the third and final book in L.J. Smith’s The Vampire Diaries: The Return trilogy, has a new U.S. release date on Amazon: March 15, 2011. We haven’t seen a listing on HarperCollins or HarperTeen yet, but this seems in-line with what we’ve been hearing these past few months. Hopefully Harper will follow up with confirmation soon. No cover yet, but we’re keeping an eye out. Pre-order The Return: Midnight.
Last month we blogged about Stefan’s Diaries – the new book series based on the TV series’ mythology, with input from L.J. Smith, Julie Plec, and Kevin Williamson – along with Stefan’s Diaries #1‘s release date of November 2, 2010. Well, now Amazon has been updated with release dates for the rest of the trilogy. Readers can expect Stefan’s Diaries #2 on January 4, 2011 and Stefan’s Diaries #3 on March 15, 2011. (Yep, same day as Midnight.)

There’s been some confusion floating around about Stefan’s Diaries, which Bookseller.com reported as being a prequel trilogy to L.J. Smith’s original Vampire Diaries book series. So imagine our confusion when a reader pointed out this HarperCollins catalog listing:
Now fans can get more of their favorite vampire drama! Written in a diary format from the point of view of smoldering vampire Stefan Salvatore, Stefan’s Diaries tells the story, as depicted on The Vampire Diaries television show, of the love triangle that would change the Salvatore brothers’ lives forever. This trilogy offers new insight into the wildly popular TV series and the epic love story that turned devoted brothers into mortal enemies.
So we emailed HarperTeen for clarification and they were gracious enough to provide us with the following statement for release:
STEFAN’S DIARIES are an exciting new project based on the VAMPIRE DIARIES novels written by LJ Smith and the TV series developed by Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec. The prequel story is based on the lore from the show, taking place during the Civil War.
We’re not entirely sure if the “new Vampire Diaries trilogy” L.J. Smith mentioned in this April 5th blog post is referencing Stefan’s Diaries or not, and we’re not entirely clear on her involvement with this particular project. But at least we know for certain that there will be a book trilogy based on the TV series’ mythology, L.J. Smith is not writing it, and it is due for release on November 2, 2010. You can pre-order it now on Amazon.
Hopefully we’ll have more information soon!

Have we mentioned lately how much we love Lorraine over at the L.J. Smith Cover Resource? She’s been working her cover voodoo and has come up trumps with all kinds of Vampire Diaries book cover goodies for us.
First up, to your left you will see the UK cover for The Return: Midnight (click on the image to view a larger version). This is the first cover we’ve seen anywhere for Midnight, and I’ve got to admit to a little bit of pride that the UK got in there first. While we may have a cover, we’re still seeing a range of dates for the publication date, from July of this year to November next year. As soon as we have something concrete, we’ll get it up on the website for you.
We’ve also got some more covers for other books in the series – from reprints to brand new publications in the UK, France, Germany and Japan. Read on to view all the new covers…

Thanks to Iony and Vampire’s Crib for the heads up. Romanian fans can now pre-order the fourth volume in the Vampire Diaries series, “Dark Reunion” (“Reuniunea”), from Leda books. The book is due out towards the end of May, and you get a 25% discount if you pre-order now. We’re seriously feeling the Bonnie love with some of these covers of late. Awesome. The CW have released a short series promo to let us know that the Vampire Diaries has “TV’s most smoldering cast”. We think they may be on to something there. ;)
ITV2 also have a promo up for episodes 12 to 14 in the UK, in which the cast is indeed looking smoldering (thanks, Denise!):
And finally, Denis has been in touch to let us know that The Return: Nightfall is set for publication in Bulgaria at some point in May. You can see the cover (which is a combination of the Bulgarian covers for The Struggle and The Fury) below.

Remember way back on January 5th, when we posted about a curious listing on the Harper Teen website? The one called Stefan’s Diaries? (The posting has since been removed.) A few days ago, author L.J. Smith posted a blog entry that had us wondering if we were misunderstanding her, or if she was saying what we now know for sure she was saying: There’s going to be yet another Vampire Diaries trilogy.
Bookseller.com is reporting that U.K. publishing house Hodder has picked up the rights to Smith’s next project: a Vampire Diaries prequel trilogy called Stefan’s Diaries – yep, prequel, as in taking place before the original Vampire Diaries series.
And, sorry, Night World fans – according to LJS, it looks like this new trilogy will be coming out before the long-awaited final volume in that series, Strange Fate.
