The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening & The StruggleSo, so cool to see authors coming out as Vampire Diaries (and L.J. Smith) fans this week. (Hi, Melissa Marr!) Sarah Rees Brennan, author of The Demon’s Lexicon (which has received ringing endorsements from such writers as Holly Black, Scott Westerfield, and Cassandra Clare), posted a funny summary of The Vampire Diaries on her LJ this morning that we had to share. Thanks to Sarah for being game – we hope she decides to write those “affectionate parodies” of the TV episodes when they start airing. SPOILERS AHOY.

The Vampire Diaries TVNo, we’re not dead – just taking a bit of a breather. We said BRING ON THE PROMO and the past few days have certainly obliged! A few things:

A big “Hola!” to our new affiliates: Vampire Diaries Web (a new fansite for the TV series), Nina Dobrev Fan, and Ian Somerhalder Online. And a special shout-out to Jen (of Nina Dobrev Fan) and Eny (of Ian Online) for being so supportive and so cool.

And thanks to everyone who’s been hitting the site like crazy this week; luckily we were prepared for the traffic onslaught. Also, thanks to all of the sites who have been linking to us for more info on all things Vampire Diaries. Now that the TV series is a go, expect lots of analyzing and updates throughout the site. (Especially in the Vampire Diaries Wiki, hurrah!)

Most of you have probably seen these already, but in case you haven’t: CW Upfront and After-Party photos can be seen at Vampire Diaries Web, Nina Dobrev Fan, and Ian Online. Looks like Zach Roerig (who is playing Matt Donovan) was also in New York for the shindig.

There is an alternate promo pic of Somerhalder, Dobrev, and Wesley that you can also see over at Ian Online.

Via Nina-Dobrev.info (and Lily!), The CW Network has launched its official Vampire Diaries site, with a series summary. There is also now an OFFICIAL Facebook page to fan the TV series.

In other news, SciFiWire is reporting that the network’s tagline for the Vampire Diaries/Supernatural pairing on Thursday nights will be: “Thursdays go Goth.”

…Yeah.

Fell's FiveThe Vampire Diaries fandom is small by Twilight juggernaut standards, but we’re an especially fierce bunch. You only have to read through the comments on this blog (and on LiveJournal, Facebook, IMDb, Amazon, Twitter, MySpace, the Devil’s Playground, the Vampire Diaries discussion forums, various fansites and entertainment blogs/boards, and even on the official Alloy book site) to understand just how passionate we can be.

The possibility of a TV show has undoubtedly put a spotlight on the series. Some may even be discovering for the first time that we’ve been plugging along online for well over a decade, or that there is even a fandom to begin with. We’re seeing older fans come out of the woodwork, new fans just discovering the books, and of course curious folk from all over wondering what’s up with this TV show and the book series it’s supposedly based on.

So we here at vampire-diaries.net feel now is the perfect time to highlight the characters, quotes, and moments that are iconic in this fandom; the bits and pieces of canon that are important to us, and made us all fans in the first place. We’re calling this little venture “Fell’s Five” (because – well, we couldn’t think of a better title). Every week (until you, or we, get bored) we’ll tick off a Top Five list – based around a theme – of all the little things we love about The Vampire Diaries. And we hope you will join in on the fun.

Since Damon is on the fandom brain lately – shocking, we know – we’re kicking things off with a theme inspired by a recent conversation on Twitter. Below the cut: our picks for top five Damon quotes. Warning: Spoilers for the Original Series, ahoy!

The Vampire Diaries WikiWe’ve been working on this for the past week, getting mediawiki installed and getting basic article templates up. Now we’re at a point where we think it’s time to invite all of you to contribute to the project.

Announcing: The Vampire Diaries Wiki

Collected here will be information on the books, the TV series, and even the computer game – yes, there was one, check the wiki to find out about it. :)

It is by no means complete, and there’s a lot of information that still needs adding. If you’d like to help out, then please sign up and start adding information. You don’t need to know how to edit a wiki to help, and there are some explanations for you on the main page. Even small things help a great deal, such as adding page references, links to useful websites, and even catching and correcting typos within the articles.

This is not just a project for fans of the books, or fans of the TV series; it’s for everyone. We realise that many fans of the books are not happy with the TV series, and TV fans may in turn not like the books – this is fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However, it would be wonderful if everyone could get along and cooperate on this project. This has the potential to be something positive for everyone if we let it.

Because we’re getting so many new visitors (we had over 1,000 hits yesterday, wow! Thanks for visiting!), I’m going to take the opportunity to let you know about how you can follow the news we post, where you can go to interact with other fans, and some of the other sections of this site that you may find interesting.

Follow Us

  • Twitter: Any posts we make on this blog automatically ship an alert with a link to the article on twitter.
  • LiveJournal Syndication: If you’re on LJ, just friend the account and you’ll have the articles posted right on your friends list.
  • RSS Feed: The raw feed, for use in the likes of Google Reader, or for setting up syndication on any sites that provide a feed-reading service.
  • Email: Get notifications of blog posts in your inbox.

Interact

  • The Devil’s Playground Forums: This is the place where many L.J. Smith fans hang around to discuss a range of things, from LJS’s books (including the Vampire Diaries) to every day topics that strike our fancy. There is a section set up specifically for the TV series, and it’s kind of empty right now. Posts on the subject would be welcome.
  • TVD Fans: Our LiveJournal community, where we discuss anything and everything Vampire Diaries.

Fanworks

  • Fell’s Church Library: This is a fanfiction archive specifically for the Vampire Diaries. It’s pretty new, so it doesn’t have quite the amount of fics that Twilight Tales does. Yet… ;)
  • Fell’s Church Gallery: An art gallery for people to post their Vampire Diaries-inspired artwork.
  • Icons & Avatars: A selection of Vampire Diaries icons contributed by fans for use on LiveJournal and forums.

There’s more to be found on the site if you explore a bit, and more to come once we have it organised beyond the planning stages. :)

If you know of any other Vampire Diaries communities you think we should be aware of, then please contact us and we’ll look into it.

Vampire-Diaries.netI’ve added a basic Vampire Diaries character bios page in the ‘books’ section. I’ll add more info when necessary at a later date.

I’ve also added an icons page to the ‘fanworks’ section. There are only a few of mine up right now, so I would really appreciate it if people could send me their own icons for inclusion. You can find out more info for doing this on the page.

On a related note, I’d like to be able to set up a wallpaper section at some point soon. If any of you have any Vampire Diaries-themed wallpaper, I’d really appreciate it if you’d let me upload it to the site. Please get in touch with me via the ‘contact’ link at the top of the page if you think you can help.

Twilight Tales has been updated, and there are a couple of Vampire Diaries fics in the update that aren’t in Fell’s Church Library, if anyone is interested.
