XX Want a chance to meet Paul Wesley in person and help a great cause at the same time? Of course you do! Stefan may be all about the blood and violence these days, but Paul’s social conscience is working just fine. Paul Wesley and Torrey DeVitto have joined forces with Global Roots, a non-profit organization with a goal of helping children in need.

Global Roots works to support local humanitarian efforts in a variety of ways, including donations of clothing, school supplies, toys, money and time, in the form of volunteer work. Paul and Torrey have their own section of the Global Roots site where you can learn more about their efforts to help. The actors will also be participating in a fundraiser in December. From the website:

We are currently raising funds to launch more children’s gardens and care centers in places on the planet where children are suffering the most. With a donation of just $10 one lucky fan will be able to sit next to Paul and Torrey this December during a special fundraising dinner in LA.

For more information about Paul’s work with Global Roots and how you can get involved, or to get more details about the December event, VISIT THE GLOBAL ROOTS WEBSITE HERE.

Vampire-Diaries.net interview with Ian SomerhalderThe Vampire Diaries fandom is an amazing force for good, with fans pulling out all the stops to contribute to projects like Vampire Support and the Ian Somerhalder Birthday Project (you can read about this past weekend’s Bash on the Bayou event, in support of St. Tammany Humane Society, over at Vampire Diaries Online).

Recently, Ian Somerhalder has been tweeting about setting up his own foundation. We can confirm that this is a very real undertaking and there are big things ahead next month in preparation for the Ian Somerhalder Foundation’s launch. If you’re (somehow) unfamiliar with Ian’s passion for the environment or animals, or you’re wondering what exactly this venture will encompass, read on. He was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about the project, including new information about the established non-profit organizations he will be closely working with, his upcoming contest, and how YOU can get involved with the Foundation.

Vampire-Diaries.net: What are the short term and long term intentions for/goals of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation? Is there a guiding “mission statement”?

Ian Somerhalder: The Foundation’s long-term activities will aim to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects that positively impact the planet and its creatures. Long-term goals will focus on habitat and biodiversity, clean energy and animals, with specific projects in reforestation, biodiversity, extinction and species-specific sterilization methods of domestic pets. Short-term goals are inviting everyone to get involved, creating teams of passionate volunteers, and fund-raising.

The Vampire Diaries' Paul Wesley for Project Teddy Bear 2009Some of you (particularly Whedonverse enthusiasts) may already be familiar with Lisa Spodak’s amazing “Lisa Walks” auctions, but in case you’re not, we’ll let her introduce herself:

My name is Lisa and every year I walk in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer…. a 2-day, marathon-and-a-half walk to raise money and awareness to fight breast cancer.

One of the ways I raise money is to ask celebrities to sign little tags that I attach to breast cancer bears and auction off along with a picture of the celebrity with a bear.

Lisa got in touch to let us know her latest batch of Project Teddy Bear 2009 auctions includes Vampire Diaries‘ very own Paul Wesley. You can bid on his bear over on eBay (auction ends in six days).

UPDATE: Lisa lets us know that those of you on Twitter who tweet a link to the Paul auction will be automatically entered to win a print of the photo featured above. A picture of Paul! With a bear! Details can be found here.

Lisa’s cause is a worthy one and we know that Vampire Diaries fans are a generous bunch. Ready to bid? And check out Lisa’s website for more information on the project and the amount of money she’s raised to help fight breast cancer.

If you were a teenager reading YM, Teen, Sassy, or Seventeen in 1991-1992, your chances of seeing this official HarperCollins ad for The Vampire Diaries book series was high:
tvdad500
This ad is notable for a few reasons (other than being ugly as all hell): it’s the only print ad we can recall from the series’ original release and because it makes no sense whatsoever. From the weird placement of the fangs, to Stefan being the most popular boy at Robert E. Lee High (uh, not quite, what with the whole suspected of murder thing – and we ain’t talkin’ about those innocent bunnies), to the hilarious thought of Stefan and Damon sharing a locker (we like to imagine Damon leaving Stefan “You Suck” post-it notes) – yeah, it’s a bundle of head-scratching. Needless to say, the newest generation of Vampire Diaries fans should be extra-grateful (okay, maybe not that grateful) that advertising for the genre is arguably more visually sophisticated than it used to be. (Many thanks to Elek Pendragon for the scan and the walk down memory lane.)

This makes us that much more curious about what the marketing campaign for the upcoming TV series will be like. (Yes, we’re assuming it’s a done deal now.) Regardless of what you think about shows like Gossip Girl, Smallville, and Supernatural, the network has a knack for memorable campaigns and imagery (and being unafraid to court controversy). Will they be pushing the central triangle in print ads? Putting the brothers front and center? Evoking Alloy’s half-face motif from the books? (And while we’re being total geeks for detail – will there be an opening title sequence? A theme song? A simple title intro like Supernatural? Is the title card in this photo of Nina Dobrev on set the final one? These things keep us up at night, you guys. Actually – just me. Yeah.)

Four months between an official greenlight on May 21st and the start of the new TV season – that’s both not far away and an eternity to keep momentum going. More importantly, it’s imperative that The Vampire Diaries has a presence at Comic Con International in San Diego this July. Production will be happening in earnest then (possibly in Georgia, as we mentioned last weekend), but considering this will be the largest concentration of the show’s potential fanbase (other than the internet, where many of those fans are active), it would be a huge, huge mistake not to be there – even if it’s just the three leads and a producer or two. Fingers crossed?

You may or may not be aware that The Vampire Diaries was released as a computer game by Her Interactive in the ’90s. We have an entire entry in the Vampire Diaries Wiki (where you can view the game trailer) dedicated to its full-on dated glory. Now, for the first time, there is a video walk-through of the game available for all to enjoy.

Thanks to the awesome Cathyrne for creating the walk-through and loading the annotations with hilarious snark and trivia. For instance, did you know that Aunt Judith is played by Sandra Ellis Lafferty, whose credits include Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Melrose Place, The Prophecy3: The Ascent, and Walk the Line? Now you do!

You can view (or listen to) the opening credits sequence below and the rest of the walk-through on YouTube.
