We don’t normally post fan work on the main blog (we have enough of a job keeping up with official news, after all), but sometimes something crops up that is exceptionally awesome or interesting that we feel we have to share. In this case, some professional-looking fanmade opening credits for the Vampire Diaries, courtesy of VampireDiaries.it.
Update: The track used in the video is Great Northern – “Houses”
When we tweeted about the video on Twitter, it actually sparked some interesting debate of opening credits vs. title card for the show. Given the nature of Twitter, it’s difficult to see if there was a winner either way (though it looked neck and neck to me), so we decided to put it to the poll. i voted for title card. opening credits is so old school. That fan made opening credits is amazing but please we want extra story. the title card added some warm up of the show.

Even though I love, love, love opening credits, the title card just works for shows like Vampire Diaries, Heroes and Supernatural. =)

Opening credits! They get me in the right mood and if they’re done really well, I get extremely excited just by watching them. E.g. True Blood, Buffy, Dexter etc.
Although I love the Title Credits of Supernatural and Supernatural because they are very unique and well integrated but I usually prefer a good opening with a nice song.

I so loved loved loved the credits (Steven R McQueen looks hot-they picked really great shots of him[sigh]) and so I voted for the credits, but I do like the fact that the title card gives us extra story!

I liked the opening credits video but I voted for the title card. I do not want to lose any story because they have to make room for opening credits. If they want opening credits then get rid of some commercials but DON’T get shorten the story!!

Ooh, thank you for that awesome video! I do love a well-done fanmade credit sequence.
I chose opening credits, because it’s something I feel very strongly about, heh! With so many shows choosing to go the way of title cards, I feel like opening credits are dying out. What I love about opening credits is the fact that you get something solid to associate the show with, so that no matter what other context you hear a particular song or tune in, you will always remember it as being part and parcel of your show. The songs are fun to sing along to, and even if they’re just set to music, they are always memorable. Plus, they’re about a minute long at most … what’s the harm in having them?

I prefer opening not the title and so i voted for \Opening Credits\
Someone told me that with an opening you can associate face with name … it’s real :)

Title card, we don’t need opening credits. something about the title card that makes it creepier and more dramatic then cuts straight into the action of the show! Can you imagine supernatural with opening credits? no, and it works.

I love opening credits. They are awesome. And I do agree with Starry Dawn about shows being associated with something solid as opening credits, with the tune and images. The best ones always leave you remembering them. They are shows with really good opening credits such as the CSI franchise and the NCIS franchise. Granted some shows are better with a title card like 24 and The Good Wife.
Although I did like these credits, I’m going with the title card for the Vampire Diaries. I really like it.
