XX Previously on The Originals, Mikael still wins for “worst father” while Klaus gets a prize for “best presents.” That little stuffed wolf, can you stand it?! The witches don’t get any awards because we’re mad at them right now. It was another busy, scary, crazy week down in New Orleans, A Closer Walk with Thee gave us some really great moments to discuss. Enjoy!

EPISODE RECAPS:

As we near the end of the season (only two episodes left!), The Originals seems to be settling into a groove. A Closer Walk With Thee carried over last week’s confident balancing of plot hijinks and thematic depth, not only delivering a damned solid hour of television full of super-snappy dialogue, but touching on every hot-button issue currently rippling through the Quarter in a way that felt breathlessly natural. Also, this episode had an extra layer of excitement as events from The Vampire Diaries – the disintegration of supernatural purgatory, aka the Other Side – leaked into the OGs’ sphere, as it absolutely should. But instead of integrating those events for a one-off, The Originals is playing that card hard, much to my delight.

By Heather Vee, Vampire-Diaries.Net

While the episode wasn’t exactly heavy with revelation or twists, it crystallized everything we love about these characters’ relationships and gave us more standout confrontations than the human heart can possibly endure. The nursery scene. The alley scene. The KISS. The flashbacks. The return of a major villain. SO MUCH blood vomit.
The Originals “A Closer Walk With Thee” Review: Wake Eerie
By Price Peterson, TV.com

The Originals sprang from a show about supernatural teenagers, and it’s on a network increasingly dedicated to supernatural teenagers. That’s not a bad thing—hell, I love many supernatural teen stories. The implicit metaphors surrounding the combinations of the supernatural, sudden adult faculties, and sudden adult impulses are inherently powerful, whether directly acknowledged or not. Yet this doesn’t mean that having superpowered teens around is always a good idea. In a situation where they’re not the dominant set of characters in a story, adding teenaged—or more accurately, youngsters’—impulses can serve as a distraction.

TWITTER REACTIONS: I’D LIKE TO SAY I SLEPT ON IT, BUT I DIDN’T SLEEP. I STAYED AWAKE ALL NIGHT NEXT TO THE BODY OF A HEXED PRIEST ONLY TO ATTEND A FUNERAL FILLED WITH VAMPIRES SO I’M THINKING YOU SHOULD TELL ME ABOUT THE SPOILERS.

Markos’ plans put Stefan and Elena in danger, so the sensible thing to do is for them to go into hiding. The not sensible part is to do so in a remote cabin in the woods (no, really, just don’t, we all know better). The perils of remote cabins aside, we’re more concerned about Damon and Caroline attempting to extract intel using parlor games. Puppy in a tutu, anyone?

XX Previously on The Vampire Diaries, the TVD fandom spent the entire hour wailing Enzo’s name on Twitter. It was a veritable Enzopalooza, there’s no doubt that this character has won the hearts of quite a lot of fans. Only a couple more episodes before the end of season 5 (!), so savor every moment of Man On Fire (EP519) before the new episode rolls in tonight.

EPISODE RECAPS:

As we find ourselves upon the final episodes of season 5, Man on Fire relegated the supernatural-wacky-doodle stuff to the subplot, to instead focus on Damon’s only friend hell-bent on revenge. It’s been a season of characters being forgotten, left behind, abandoned, and Enzo locked in a cage for 70 years might get top prize for most hard done by.
Vampire Diaries In Review: Man On Fire (EP519) – Not a Care in the World
By Crissy Calhoun, Vampire-Diaries.Net

For a while now The Vampire Diaries has been slowly dismantling all its earlier simplistic notions of teen romance and trading it in for something more enduring and nuanced. That means hookups have become romances and romances have become breakups and at the end everything averages out to a tightly bound group of friends. That’s why Damon can call up Caroline for help (flashback to their troubling relationship in Season 1) and Stefan can hang out helping Elena study for tests even though there was a time he could barely look at her. Because friendship! It endures! Unfortunately, the downside is that a friend breakup can seem even more brutal than a romantic one.
The Vampire Diaries “Man on Fire” Review: Heart of Sass (PHOTO RECAP)
By Price Peterson, TV.com

It’s amazing how much better The Vampire Diaries works when it steps back from the love stories a bit. This has always been a show that innately knows how to use its relationship threads to enhance an episode’s plot, getting in trouble when it lets those threads define an episode instead. “Man On Fire” is an abrupt return to this structure; a fantastic episode that not only rights the sinking ship that was this season’s focus on the love triangle, but also manages to use those tired relationships in a way that actually strengthened the episode instead of detracting from it. Well done, TVD.
The Vampire Diaries: “Man On Fire”: Enzo wants revenge, and it’s so, so sweet
By Carrie Raisler, A.V. Club

Enzo has been sizzling throughout the back half of The Vampire Diaries Season 5. But he was truly a “Man on Fire” this Thursday night after learning that Damon killed Maggie back in the 1960s.
