XXPreviously on The Originals, Mikael ruined opera night in a pretty spectacular way, sibling problems were at an all-time high among the Mikaelsons and Hayley proved she can really rock a shotgun. Never a dull moment in New Orleans!

Just as one chapter seemed to come to an abrupt end, another began with a gasp. Le Grand Guignol was a breakneck hour filled with glittering and bloody flashbacks, cracking good dialogue, an abundance of excellent character flourishes, and a penultimate scene that was more unsettling than a sanatorium full of blood-coughing horrors. Finally we have the full picture of what went down the night the Original siblings fled New Orleans and, like the opera that frames Mikael’s destruction, it’s grand drama.
The Originals In Review: Le Grand Guignol (EP115) – Rip My Heart Out
By Heather Vee, Vampire-Diaries.Net

As good as The Originals has been about spinning engaging yarns from an originally inert premise, this new Mikael storyline has not been very well delivered! The first problem was informing us up front that Rebekah and Marcel had summoned him. Why were we supposed to care? What was so bad about Mikael? Then we spent an entire episode where the tension was supposed to come from Klaus learning a fact we already knew. We should’ve learned who summoned Klaus right alongside Klaus. But even if we had, why would it have been shocking other than The Originals simply telling us it would be? The Originals should’ve first shown us Mikael’s reign of terror AND THEN revealed that Rebekah had been the one to send for him. Plus, we already know the ultimate punchline of this story: Mikael gets staked in Mystic Falls sometime in the 2010s like it’s no big deal. Our knowledge of this kiiiinda undercuts the tension a lot. See, this is why I don’t like prequels: We usually know how they end.
The Originals “Le Grand Guignol” Review: A Fright at the Opera
By Price Peterson,

The Originals left off with Elijah and Klaus ready to rumble over Rebekah. Klaus wants her dead and Elijah wants to heal his family. Still. Oh, and Celeste is gone and Davina is back!

Joseph Morgan as KlausComplex has a nice lengthy interview with Joseph Morgan in which he discusses the development of the spinoff, his dead Original siblings, and more. On how he builds his portrayal:

“When I am Klaus, I keep in mind that my evil comes from the fact that I had a dysfunctional childhood, my father wasn’t my real father, my mother and my siblings rejected me so I’m striving for love and I want affection and I’m lashing out because I’m not getting it. All of these things that build the backstory for the character. When the audience is allowed to glimpse that backstory, to see Klaus as a child or young man, that allows them to sympathize with him. And to a certain extent, to justify some of the things he’s doing in the context of this fictional world.”

The CW has released the official synopsis for The Vampire Diaries: While You Were Sleeping (EP516), airing Thursday, March 20th at 8/7c. Highlight for spoilers:

A KILLER VIRUS — When Stefan (Paul Wesley) tries to explain recent events to a very sick Elena (Nina Dobrev), her first instinct is to call Damon (Ian Somerhalder). At the same time, Damon is trying to figure out how to make a disturbing confession to Elena. While going through Dr. Wes’ files, Caroline (Candice Accola) discovers a frightening secret, and is surprised when Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey) appears, claiming to have the solution everyone is searching for. At Enzo’s insistence, Caroline asks Stefan to meet her at a mysterious location where they are joined by a group of Travelers, including Sloan (guest star Caitlin McHugh), who reveals new information on the importance of doppelgangers. During spring break on a mostly deserted Whitmore campus, Elena runs into Luke (guest star Chris Brochu), a student who seems to know her, though she has no memory of meeting him. Recently dumped by his boyfriend, Luke proposes that he and Elena spend the break getting drunk together, but she sends him off on an urgent mission to find Bonnie (Kat Graham) and the “newbie” witch, Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell). Damon finally tells Elena the truth about his recent activities, and they come to a new agreement about their relationship.

The episode was directed by Pascal Verschooris and written by Caroline Dries.
