Fun news during tonight’s new episode of The Originals: The CW is bringing us a new recap/interview digital series for the show called Secrets from the Quarter and it is hosted by none other than Steven Krueger, aka Josh, First of His Name, Bestest of Best Friends, He Who Shall Never Die. Executive producers Michael Narducci and Julie Plec sit in on this round to discuss The Big Uneasy. WARNING: Wait until you’ve watched tonight’s episode before watching this, as it super-spoils everything that happens. (And a LOT happens.)

XXRemember back in season four, when Nina Dobrev only had to play two characters at a time? From our lofty season 5 vantage point, filming an Elena vs. Katherine fight scene might not seem like as big a deal, but it’s still pretty complicated filming. Entertainment Weekly did separate interviews with Nina and John Copeman (stunt coordinator) to get their individual takes on the fight scene.

JOHN COPEMAN: The first thing I did was read the script and really block the fight, try to make some character beats. You don’t want to make it all big punches, big throws. At least if there’s a good line, accent that with a throw or a punch so it feels more character driven than just, “Hey let’s do a neat stunt.” And then I thought about what Nina can do, because Nina is stupidly flexible. So knowing that she could kick really high, we thought we would have Katherine, who’s wearing like spike boots, throw a side kick into her throat after she throws Elena against the lockers, pin her there, and then she’s delivering a line. And then Elena delivers a line back and kind of trips her, runs over and rips the locker off. So we were thinking about, “What can Nina do?”

NINA DOBREV: I like to push the envelope. They don’t like to let me do much at all. If it was up to them, they wouldn’t let me do any of it. If I was a stunt performer on our show, I would probably be a little frustrated because their whole job is to come to set and get to do the big cool crazy fun stuff, and I’ll usually ask John if I can do something. If they say no, I’ll kind of do it anyway, and then apologize later and be like, “Oops I forgot that I wasn’t supposed to do that!” [Laughs] It’s always easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission. They didn’t let me hit the glass, I know that for sure. But I definitely hit the locker. I try to do as much as I can if they let me.

XXRemember when Elena’s biggest problem was plain old water? Lots of changes since then but Elena’s drowning scene was a big challenge for the actors and crew. Entertainment Weekly has a great piece on the mechanics of filming that scene, as told by Supervising Producer Chris Grismer.

I started the actors training for the scene about two months before we shot. They had to train every weekend with dive instructors. Nina Dobrev was already PADI-certified, but those who weren’t had to become. They also had to learn how to act underwater for a long period of time without air: They had to learn how to do a scene and then get air between takes from a safety diver, who was never more than five or six feet away, instead of coming back up to the surface, which I think was pretty terrifying for them.
