Vampire Diaries Founders Council DocumentA long time ago – back in episode 4, “Family Ties” – there was a Vampire Diaries set piece featured that had Vee and I pretty excited. It was the document that the Founders Council all signed upon the attendance of the first Founders party, and our bookish fan selves were delighted to see shout-outs to Honoria Fell and Mayor Jacob Lockwood (aka Smallwood, though interestingly Elena reads out “Benjamin Lockwood” in the episode) on there. We’ve since discovered that the document also includes the signatures of Giuseppe Salvatore and Thomas Keeping Fell, which fills us with even more glee.

Maren Nicholas is the talented calligraphy artist who was asked to create both the Founders Council document and the placards that were used for displaying other items in the collection of family heirlooms. She was kind enough to take some time out to answer some questions for us, and to provide us with some images of the document so that everyone can get a closer look at the signatures and appreciate the detail and work that went into the project. Read on to find out about how the document was made, and click on the thumbnails to view the larger images.

How did you get into calligraphy?

I started doing calligraphy when I was 13 years old and had my first paying job at the age of 14. I was an Art major (among other things…) in college at an all-women’s college where I did a fair amount of calligraphy for formal dinners, teas, etc. My most recent job before staying home when my children were born was at Party City where I sold wedding invitations. When asked if I knew anyone who did calligraphy, I told them I did which is where I got the idea to start my calligraphy business. I have now been doing this as a professional business for about 8 years.

The intrepid and awesome Ella (who supplied us with some of the first set pics way back when the series started filming) paid another visit to Covington today, and got some shots of Paul Wesley and Matt Davis filming some scenes together. We’ve got a few for you here, and you can view the rest of the batch over in Ella’s album in our gallery.

Only a few days left now until the terrible Vampire Diaries hiatus is over and “Bloodlines” airs. To help you keep your sanity for the last stretch, we’ve got some behind the scenes stills from episode 7, “Haunted”. We especially love the ones of Vicki vamped out up close. A clear still of the vampire effects is a rare and precious thing. Click on the images to view larger versions, or view the entire set of stills for the episode in our “Haunted” gallery.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThanks to RadarOnline for dropping us a line this morning about their chat with Sara Canning. (Which perked us up, must say. Think the only thing rarer than a Sara interview is a Steven R. McQueen one – cough.) She talks about moving in with Nina Dobrev, adjusting to Atlanta’s decidedly non-Canadian weather, and hints that those meaningful glances between Jenna and Alaric might graduate to…oh, well, who knows with this show? At least she seems to love working with Matt Davis, whom she deems “hysterical.” (But will Jenna come up with a snappy nickname for Alaric? “Scumfell” was a beautiful thing.)

Canning is definitely having fun with her role despite not being one of the high school characters. “I think Jenna is really fun to play because she is a parental figure on the show but is still really young herself,” the 22-year old actress said. “She is really feisty, spirited, and headstrong. And she’s still going through those rough patches with guys.”

Read the entire interview on RadarOnline.

The CW had a cocktail party following the TCA panel this past Saturday (Bloody Marys in honor of Vampire Diaries, nice one) and they’ve released some photos from the event, which you can view below, courtesy of Cynthia over at SFUniverse. (That’s CW president Dawn Ostroff with Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder). Note the Love Sucks threesome poster (the other one) – slightly different version than ones we’ve seen before.

@LilMissX has also posted some nice behind the scenes candids from TCA, including shots of Kevin Williamson and Nina, Ian with Dawn Ostroff and Nina and Ian playing with some Vampire Diaries promo goodies.

Lots of recaps coming out of the TCA panel, but this tidbit in particular gave us a good laugh this morning (and we’re begging the PTB to include this on the season one DVD set, por favor) – courtesy of Teen Television, re: on-set bloopers:

Paul: There was that blooper when you [Nina] were Katherine, and you had that really long dress and fell. She was trying to be all sexy.
Ian: Adorable and sexy.
Paul: And then she was “Boys, chase me”.
Ian: And then she like “wham,” and all you just see are her knickers.
Nina: And then I couldn’t get up because it was so much dress that I was just sitting there, like “save me.”
Paul: We’re hysterically laughing. Then we were like, “Are you okay?”
Ian: We didn’t even help her! It’s on camera. [She falls] and her petticoat goes up.

While we’re sure everyone knows that the Vampire Diaries won the favourite new drama category at the People’s Choice Awards, we also imagine that not everyone was able to see it happen. So, for your viewing pleasure, Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) announcing the Vampire Diaries as the winning show.

Regular forum member and proud Elena fan thedean786 has written an interesting article explaining just why the Vampire Diaries appeals to a regular guy such as himself:

So I’ve got a confession to make. I like TVD – no, wait, scratch that – I actually love TVD. *sigh* much better. I really needed to get that off my chest. But here’s the kicker – I’m actually a guy that actually enjoys watching a TV show which for all intents and purposes I should be shunning. I mean c’mon, what “full grown alpha male” in his right mind would ever admit to liking this show? Especially since it’s supposedly for the “screaming sappy girl fans of Twilight” – ok that was a bit harsh, but you get my point. Yet here I am readily admitting my admiration of all things TVD. Could I possibly be insane? Read on dear friends read on.

You can catch a glimpse of Ian, Nina and Paul on the dance set of episode 12, “Unpleasantville”, in the video below:

And finally, Marcos Siega tweeted a picture from his phone of some of the cast hard at work on set… on their own phones. ;)

Marathon week is all about re-experiencing the Vampire Diaries, so how about a little blast from the past with some behind the scenes pictures from “Night of the Comet”? We’ve got to admit that Ian’s devilish grin in the first picture gives us a thrill of fear. Reassuring to know he’s not that evil in real life.

Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley have commented in various video interviews and magazine articles about the process of being transformed into vampires, and now we have some behind the scenes photos of Ian’s transformation into a vamped-out Damon Salvatore. It’s pretty fascinating, though we know some of you will prefer not to know in order to keep the magic of the Vampire Diaries intact so we won’t spoil you. ;) For those who are interested, you can find the images of the vamping process in the gallery and see what’s involved in turning Mr. Somerhalder into the scary-looking guy below.

Many thanks to the ever-awesome @CW_VampDiaries for the headsup! KTLA have been broadcasting live today from the set of the Vampire Diaries, interviewing various cast members from the set of Stefan’s bedroom (which, as many know, is a set that both Vee and I really love). For those of you who don’t live in LA, or missed it, KTLA have posted up videos of the interviews with Ian Somerhalder & Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev, Katerina Graham, and Candice Accola & Zach Roerig. We’ll update this post if and when KTLA upload videos with the rest of the cast.

Update: (thanks, killerchopsticks!) Michael Trevino & Steven R. McQueen:

For those of you who missed the SCREAM Awards last night, you can see Ian, Nina and Paul presenting the ‘Best TV Show’ award here. Here’s to the cast and producers of the Vampire Diaries being on the stage next year accepting an award. ;)

We also have a behind the scenes video interview with Kevin Williamson, Julie Plec and Marcos Siega, talking about the series from back when the pilot episode was being shot. Nothing we don’t already know by now, but it’s fun to watch, and I think this may be the first time we’ve seen Marcos Siega talking on camera about the series.
