L.J. Smith recently updated her blog with more information about the new and as-yet unnamed Vampire Diaries trilogy, including the titles of the books and the overall idea of what the trilogy will be about.

I’ve just emerged from a very intense session of negotiation with the result that, barring my publishers rejecting Midnight, there will be a new arc of three books in The Vampire Diaries series. My choices for titles are Phantom, Evensong and Eternity, but first thing this morning my agent informed me that they are looking to me for suggestions for a name for the entire arc (the last one they called The Return). If anyone has a nice title and no use for it, email me. The books are about Elena and Stefan et. al. starting at Dalcrest College, and finding themselves playing the role of Spirit Hunters (already suggested by me) or just plain hunting serial murderers who may or may not be mystical. If you do think of something, and we use it, I’ll send you an autographed book!

As there are spoilers for The Return trilogy in this, we’d appreciate it if you didn’t discuss spoilers in the comments, and headed over to our forums to join in on any spoilery discussion there, please.

Good news for Danish fans – The Return Trilogy is due for publication in Denmark at some point in the near future. No date yet, but given we’re in the second half of August already, late 2010 or early 2011 seems like a reasonable guess. You can keep an eye on the Vampire Diaries section of the Tellerup website, and also order the first four books from there, too. The covers for Nightfall (Mørkets frembrud) and Shadow Souls (Skyggesjæle) have been revealed, with just Midnight (Midnat) left as a mystery. Many thanks to the LJS Covers Resource for the book covers.

Stefan's Diaries: OriginsEntertainment Weekly has revealed the cover of Origins, the first novel in HarperTeen’s Stefan’s Diaries TV prequel series. As far as we know, the book is still scheduled for an early November release.

Amazon listings still aren’t sorted, so no link to an easy pre-order for now. We’ll let you know as soon as that changes. In the meantime, you can learn everything we know so far about the series by clicking: Stefan’s Diaries. Includes plot synopses for each book in the trilogy, and more.

So what do you think of the cover? Like the tie-in with the half-face theme? Wish they’d gone with something a little more Civil War-y? Sound off.

The Return: Midnight - UK coverHave we mentioned lately how much we love Lorraine over at the L.J. Smith Cover Resource? She’s been working her cover voodoo and has come up trumps with all kinds of Vampire Diaries book cover goodies for us.

As soon as we have something concrete, we’ll get it up on the website for you.

A few months ago, we were approached by the fabulous Leah Wilson, editor-in-chief for Smart Pop Books, about contributing an essay to their planned Vampire Diaries anthology, due for release October 2010. Well, one thing led to another, and we’re so excited to finally share the good news with you…

A Visitors Guide to Mystic Falls: Your Favorite Authors on The Vampire Diaries

For those unfamiliar, Smart Pop Books is an imprint that specializes in pop culture essay collections. You may know them for their great Firefly/Serenity-centric volumes edited by Whedonverse writer Jane Espenson, but they’ve done several centered around books and comics (Twilight, Batman, Percy Jackon, The Uglies), film (James Bond, The Matrix, Star Wars), and of course television shows (Supernatural, Buffy/Angel, Veronica Mars, 24, Lost, Gilmore Girls). Contributors to the Smart Pop series have included many names you’ll recognize from all of the above mediums.

The list of contributors and essay topics for A Visitors Guide to Mystic Falls is still being finalized, but we can tell you that there is a theme to who is contributing, and they’ll each be discussing a particular facet of the Vampire Diaries TV ‘verse. (And, yes, some of the topics and contributors have us in geek heaven. Just sayin’.)

So while we can’t tell you much about the contents of the collection (yet), we can let you in some trivia associated with the cover (which was a fun process!):

  • Leah searched high and low for a florist who could supply vervain, but we reassured her that the plant chosen was okay because (show fact!) that wasn’t vervain in Uncle Zach’s basement either. Real vervain is just not pretty.
  • The papers are actual 19th century American papers, chosen specifically for the shoot. The fact that “Thursday night” is clearly visible above the necklace is entirely accidental – but brilliant.
  • We are far too pleased at having blood spattered over our names.

We’ll have more information for you soon. In the meantime, you can show Smart Pop some love on Twitter (@smartpopbooks) and Facebook.

The CW have released a short series promo to let us know that the Vampire Diaries has “TV’s most smoldering cast”. We think they may be on to something there. ;)

ITV2 also have a promo up for episodes 12 to 14 in the UK, in which the cast is indeed looking smoldering (thanks, Denise!):

And finally, Denis has been in touch to let us know that The Return: Nightfall is set for publication in Bulgaria at some point in May. You can see the cover (which is a combination of the Bulgarian covers for The Struggle and The Fury) below.
