The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening/The StruggleWe’ve been getting a lot of questions about the covers of the Vampire Diaries omnibus reissues, specifically about The Awakening/The Struggle. So rather than speculate, we emailed artist/photographer/director Chad Michael Ward and asked whether actual models were used as the basis for his Vampire Diaries digital paintings. (The cover of Nightfall is the work of photographer Carrie Schechter.)

He let us know that the paintings were indeed based on photographs he took of local models in Los Angeles – and no, he did not give up their names, and we didn’t ask for them (for obvious reasons, considering how many people ask). So we hope that answers at least part of the question. Yes, that half-faced specimen of “Italian” man on the Awakening/Struggle cover exists in real life (in some form, anyway). And we thank him for lending us his mouth. Cough.

If you have a minute or 30, you should check out Ward’s portfolio on his website (potentially NSFW). You may be surprised to learn he is best known for his work with Marilyn Manson and his erotic portraits.

The Awakening and The StruggleIn recent months there has been an influx of new people in the fandom who have just read The Vampire Diaries, in particular the double-volume reprints from 2007. In fact, many newcomers to the books have been known to assume that there are just three books in the series rather than the actual five. People are surprised to discover that the books were originally printed as individual volumes, and even more surprised to find out how long the series has existed.

The Vampire Diaries has been around since 1991, and has been reprinted many times over in many different countries. You can imagine that with the original four books alone, that generates quite a lot of covers. We figured it might be cool to showcase some of these various covers from the original series, from the old to the new, the interesting to the bizarre.

Thanks to Lorraine at the LJS Cover Resource and Incanto for providing these covers for the article. As always, you can expect some minor spoilers ahead. Clicking on the picture thumbnails will take you to larger, clearer versions of the covers.

Read on and view the covers…

The Vampire Diaries: Nightfall coverCarrie Schechter, the photographer for the cover of Nightfall has blogged about the release of the book (the trailers she refers to are likely for a completely different Vampire Diaries that isn’t related to the books, or they’re the audition videos we’ve already seen). She’s also posted a behind the scenes look at the shoot, in which you can get a look at the model for who we assume to be Damon.
