17 days of this hiatus left until we get to see “A Few Good Men” (well, those of us who weren’t lucky enough to see the advance screening at the Vampire Diaries panel at PaleyFest, at any rate). You all surviving? If not, we’ve got a giveaway to keep you going through the next couple of weeks. This week one lucky tweeter will get to read about where the Vampire Diaries began with L.J. Smith’s original quartet of books (more recently bundled up into two omnibus volumes). Read on to find out how to enter.

The Awakening and The Struggle The Fury and Dark Reunion

As usual, we’re doing this on Twitter over the course of the next 24 hours. If you don’t have a Twitter account, it’s easy to sign up for one, and it’s also fun.

  • To enter, simply tweet which characters you ‘ship in the Vampire Diaries to @tvdnews. It can be a canon pairing, or a couple you wish would get together in the show. For example: @tvdnews Stefan/Elena (or Damon/Bonnie, Matt/Caroline, etc). Also, please only tweet at us once to enter – tweeting more than once does not improve your chances of winning and makes things more difficult for us.
  • The winner will be picked randomly using the ‘names in a virtual hat’ method (or, more boringly, a random name picker script).
  • You’ll need to be following @tvdnews – we’ll be DMing the winner.
  • This giveaway is open to anyone in the world, not just the USA.
  • These will be English language versions of the books. Covers may differ depending on your location in the world.
  • You have until Tuesday, March 9, 8pm ET to enter. (You can use the World Clock to work out when that is in relation to your own time zone).

If you have any questions, feel free to tweet them at us, or use the contact form to get in touch. We’re also planning on a few more giveaways in the future, so keep an eye out.

Good luck, everyone!

Vampire Diaries Comic Con BagThe entries are all in (thank you to everyone who entered! You certainly kept us entertained with your captions), and we’ve spent the weekend deliberating over them all. We’ve managed to narrow down the entries to ten, and it’s now up to you guys to vote for the winners of the Vampire Diaries Comic Con goodies. Voting will remain open until Sunday, August 23rd 11:59pm Western US time, and then we’ll announce the winners on Monday, August 24th.

So, without further ado, take a look at the following picture and then choose your favourite caption from the list below. Good luck, everyone!

MTV’s Hollywood Crush has posted a video interview (usual disclaimer of being viewable in the USA only) [Vee note: Actually, looks like some other countries can indeed view it. Maybe it's just a conspiracy against the UK?] in which he speaks of the Vampire Diaries vs. Twilight debate, suggesting that the Vampire Diaries is ‘edgier’. We certainly can’t dispute that given our vampires have teeth with very sharp edges. ;)

CWgossip has posted another trailer to YouTube. We’ve seen pretty much all of it before, but it’s fun to watch and you have to appreciate the way it’s not taking itself too seriously. Thanks to Wilson over at Vampire Diaries Brasil for pointing us at the Portuguese subtitled version. The song used in the promo is “Hang You from the Heavens” by The Dead Weather.

The Hollywood Reporter has an article up in which TV analyst Steve Sternberg reveals his annual picks for the shows likely to succeed or fail this Fall. The Vampire Diaries has been ranked on his list as one of ‘the best’, with the comment “a tough time period, but this has potential to do well.”

A little reminder that you can vote for the Vampire Diaries in the most anticipated show for this Fall in the Television Without Pity Tubey Awards. You need to click the 9-10 tab for TVD’s category.

And finally, the deadline for our Vampire Diaries Comic Con goodies contest is only a few hours away, so be sure to get in your entry.

Paul Wesley as Stefan SalvatoreIESB has a thorough compilation of Paul Wesley quotes from the Television Critics Association press tour last week. Most of this you’ve already seen elsewhere, but there are some new nuggets buried in there.

Michael Trevino posted a few pics from the set on Tuesday afternoon, including what we shall call “Portrait with Shoulder Pads” – a candid of himself with Zach Roerig and Paul Wesley, all decked in football practice gear. They look hot. No, really – we hope there was an arsenal of bottled water and spray misters. (And yes, they’re the Mystic Falls Timberwolves. We know Kevin Williamson confirmed the mascot would be Wildcats – as some of you reminded us on Twitter – but circumstances are circumstances, and hey, we think Timberwolves is rather clever. You never know, maybe they’ll appear as a rival team at some point.)

Marcos Siega tweeted that prep work for episode 4 is underway, while episode 103 began filming yesterday at the Lockwood Mansion. KW promises “blood and hormones run amuck.” That sounds fun.

Hollywood Crush has an article and video interview (only viewable in the USA) with Kevin Williamson in which he reassures readers that Vampire Diaries “isn’t Twilight at all”, and more of a “modern-day sexy Dark Shadows“. Seems like a good thing to us.

A short ‘TV to Talk About’ promo clip has turned up on YouTube with Paul Wesley, Candice Accola, Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Katerina Graham all making an appearance.

Vampire Diaries BG passed along a photo of Vampire Diaries elevator door advertising in Los Angeles that appeared in a Bulgarian newspaper. We also hear TVD has a definite presence in NYC’s Times Square right now (if you have pics, we’d love to see them!), as well as throughout the city.

Finally, our caption contest ends tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. Western U.S. time. There are Vampire Diaries bags, posters and buttons up for grabs (pictured below), so head on over to the contest post, take a look at the pic and wow us with your witty one-liners before the entry deadline.

Damon, Stefan and ElenaFirst of all, today (well, technically tomorrow, but whatever) marks the one month countdown to the Vampire Diaries premiere, which airs on September 10th on the CW. We’ve added a little countdown to the sidebar on the right for a bit of fun.

People.com has posted “Five Things to Know About TV’s Hottest New Vampire“, a short-but-sweet article about Paul Wesley in which acting, pointy teeth, and the show are talked about. We have to give a shout out to his little sisters for reading the books – we hope they liked them! Also, we can guarantee that his family aren’t his only fans.

Korbi Ghosh from Zap2it caught up with Ian Somerhalder for a brief chat. That link could be considered spoilery if you have any idea about the cast and characters (or have seen the pilot), but from a non-spoilery perspective it’s starting to look like Damon may well be set to steadily work his way through the population of Mystic Falls, leaving quite a few disheveled ladies in his wake.

There’s an audio snippet of Kevin Williamson at the TCA panel over on Hollywood Outbreak. It’s a section we’ve posted about in text format before, in which KW explains that the Vampire Diaries isn’t just a teen show but more of a small town show that will develop the mythology in the books.

In set news, it looks like the body count starts here. Michael Trevino teased followers on Twitter with a picture of the Mystic Falls coroner’s van. Given the potential death toll (dare we say it could give Sunnydale a run for its money?), we have to wonder if they’ll be needing to purchase another van for the Mystic Falls coroner’s office before the season ends?

GMMR and Ducky talk about the Vampire Diaries in their TV Talk podcast, briefly discussing the fact that they enjoyed the pilot (the term ‘guilty pleasure’ crops up) and the ‘swoonworthy’ nature of Paul Wesley. They’re planning on discussing it in more depth in their Fall TV podcast. The Vampire Diaries discussion starts at the 32:30 mark for those who want to skip ahead to it.

The Television Without Pity Tubey Awards are underway, and the Vampire Diaries TV series is up for ‘Most Anticipated New Show of the 2009-10 Season’. Go and cast your votes in the polls. You can find the TVD poll under the ’9-10′ tab.

Sally from Australia sent us an email to say that Freeview channel GO! – who will be airing the Vampire Diaries in Australia later this year (though still no specific dates) – has now launched, and they’re airing adverts for the series on a pretty regular basis.

Vampire Diaries fans Rachel and Andrea have been busy channeling their love for the series creatively by making some awesome t-shirts. Do we have any other fans out there with a similar crafty flair?

Caption Competition Update:

We’d just like to remind you all that you have until Friday to enter our caption competition to win some Vampire Diaries Comic Con goodies. Judging from some of the entries, we get the impression we may not have been clear enough with what the caption competition is, so we’ve updated the post to explain the concept some more and to provide an example of a caption for you.

Because some people might not have understood what we were asking for in this contest we’ve decided that participants are welcome to change their caption to something else if they’ve already submitted one to us. No worries if you’re happy with what you submitted, but we feel it’s only fair to give people the option.
