XXAn episode that will always be known in my heart as the Junkyard One, Rescue Me featured breakups and blonde would-be assassins, tests of character and trust games. And a new crime-fighting trio…

XX Previously on The Vampire Diaries, Elena had a lot of catching up to do. The first few months of college are often something of a blur, but thanks to Katherine, Elena had an awful lot of shenanigans to sort through.

For an episode where Elena had a heck of a lot of catching up to do — made much trickier thanks to Katherine’s parting gift of a werewolf-venom-infused ripper virus — While You Were Sleeping seemed more about providing a bridge from the Katherine arc to the final batch of episodes of the season.

I can only speak for myself, but I think the main thing I don’t like about this season is how exhausted I am with the main trio. At this point we’ve seen every permutation of their romances and their mental states and I frankly do NOT care anymore. I’m just so tired of Damon, Stefan, and Elena. All three can go take an Uber directly into a volcano for all I care. It would be a different story if this season had them moving forward or growing somehow, but in doubling down on the past it’s made them all regress into immature states that I just don’t care to witness after four seasons of forward movement. Fortunately “While You Were Sleeping” suggested that all three of them are starting to feel the same way. Damon and Elena even broke up! (Sort of.) Stefan is definitely headed more in the direction of a certain blonde judgey type. So, fingers crossed, things might be moving forward again?

So… Elena and Damon are cured, Liv is not what she seems and there is ANOTHER Stefan doppleganger out there.

The departure of Katherine Pierce leaves The Vampire Diaries with some seriously huge stilettos to fill. She basically singlehandedly saved season five, ripping it out of the narrative doldrums it threatened to sink into before she arrived on the scene. But now that she’s gone—taking her infectious turn as an Elena impersonator with her—will the show be able to keep the momentum her story arc started alive?

Nina Dobrev as KatherineWith the necessary mourning period come to an end, it’s time to talk about just what made Gone Girl such a season stand-out episode — despite the fact that that ending means a certain spark has been extinguished from the TVDverse, perhaps forever.

Vampire Diaries In Review: No Exit (514) - Be CoolNothing like being forced to spend time in an enclosed space with someone to lead to canoodling! Whether orchestrated or enforced, No Exit saw the TVD gang in some delightfully tricky situations. And as with most trouble in the lives of the Salvatore brothers for the past 150 odd years, all roads led back to Katherine Pierce.

Previously On The Vampire Diaries: Total Eclipse Of The Heart (EP513)Previously on The Vampire Diaries… Good god, it’s been forever, hasn’t it? A total eclipse of our hearts for three weeks. But it’s okay, lovely viewers: TVD is back, finally, and before we move on to new shenanigans, let us reflect on the weird, snarky, bloody glory of Total Eclipse of the Heart (EP513).

Both Caroline and Damon want to make a clean, no-looking-back, burn-the-bridges breaks from their past relationships. Caroline’s method — shredding photos and a fan-favorite horse drawing — is a little less dark than Damon’s, which involves murder, more murder, and attempted murder on a little brother who’s seen way more than his fair share of being murdered.

Guys, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was a very existential episode! In a general sense it was also very retro: Tons of Season 1 feels all over the place, from the diary intro (again with the diary intro!), but especially to the very Season 1-seeming Damon. The only thing that was missing was the white pancake makeup, but other than that, this was old-school Damon for sure. (Still patiently waiting for another Depeche Mode underwear dance party scene.)

By Price Peterson,

This is why you always kill the bad guy. The last few episodes have been blissfully Dr. Maxfield-free. But it was never a question of if he would come back, but when; the last vision of Elena and Stefan leaving him knocked out on the floor, but not finishing the job, ensuring his return to cause more problems. It’s just The Vampire Diaries’ way.

XXPreviously on The Vampire Diaries, the show snatched our hearts yet again with doppelganger hijinks, a welcome home party, and the good old “body in the road” trick. Refresh your memory of everything that went down in The Devil Inside (EP512) before tonight’s new episode!

In the immortal words of INXS, Every single one of us, the devil inside. And nowhere is that more true than in Mystic Falls. The Devil Inside was another top-notch episode, in my opinion, with the Katherine-bodyjacking-Elena plotline taking its next logical, and for some disastrous, steps.
Vampire Diaries In Review: The Devil Inside (EP512) – It’s Done
By Crissy Calhoun, Vampire-Diaries.Net

They say that phone numbers are seven digits because studies showed that the human brain can only remember seven things at a time. That is definitely true for me, but usually anywhere between 4 to 5 of the things I remember are candy-related. I occasionally remember items from the menu at Popeye’s. But that only leaves one to two things that I can fit in my brain at any given time, so that means I forget A LOT of things. I especially have a goldfish memory when it comes to The Vampire Diaries, which I think we can all agree has ten episodes too many in each season. 22 episodes just seems like A LOT of episodes! It is crazy that ANY shows try to tell a 22-hour story anymore, let alone one like this, a complicated serial that borders on cable-level quality.

By Price Peterson,

This. This is The Vampire Diaries firing on all cylinders.

Last week’s 100th episode was a lot of fun, but it showed obvious strain in an attempt to properly commemorate the momentous occasion while still telling a compelling TVD story. “The Devil Inside,” free from these shackles, practically explodes onto the screen with unfettered glee and doesn’t let up until the very end. It’s a good time, but more importantly it’s a good story told well, and that’s something that has been sorely missing for a lot of this season.

Ian Somerhalder as DamonIt’s a very nostalgic time to be a hardcore Vampire Diaries fan as the show hit 100 episodes with 500 Years of Solitude on Thursday, and Twitter flipped the frak out over an episode that gave us so much to talk about. Thanks to the power duo of Julie Plec and Caroline Dries, who wrote it, we were treated to memories and manipulations, scandalous sex, and a chance to see so many of the dearly departed — all while pushing the season forward to its next logical doppelganger hijink.

Vampire Diaries In Review: Fifty Shades of Grayson (EP510) - Devil InsideThe long winter hiatus is just about finished, and before we move on to TVD’s one hundredth episode (!!!), let’s revisit the fall finale, Fifty Shades of Grayson. An episode that saw Katherine hoping for redemption, while Damon rejected the very idea of it. And somewhere, out there, is a vial of goop that can turn any one of our favorite vampires into a crazed vampire-eating ripper…
