Vampire Diaries In Review: Home (EP522) - The Captain Goes Down with the ShipAnd so it ends. Season five came to a close on Thursday night with a heart-breaking implosion (and an impressive explosion) that left our characters unmoored — loved ones lost, and returned. Home is where the heart is, as the saying goes, and in this finale, the Mystic Falls gang proved willing to go to the ends of the earth to be together and to protect their loved ones even when that meant risking their own existence.

Vampire Diaries In Review: Promised Land (EP521) - One Move LeftEveryone okay out there? TVD did what TVD does best on Thursday night, and that’s to leave us tweeting in all-caps or stunned into silence. Did that really happen?

After an episode that was not my favorite, Promised Land was like a Vampire Diaries master class. The dialogue crackled, it looked insanely beautiful, it was gory and gruesome (please no one ever drain my magic blood for four days straight), and there were these wonderful character moments. Vampire Diaries In Review: What Lies Beneath (EP520) - Cabin in the WoodsWhen you’re on the run from an evil magic nomadic people and you could hide anywhere in the world, where do you go? Isolated cabin in the woods. It’s picturesque, it’s perfect for boozing it up, and it’s chock-full of opportunity for a vengeful ghost to get all revenge-y. Let’s talk about What Lies Beneath!

Vampire Diaries In Review: Man On Fire (EP519) - Not a Care in the WorldAs we find ourselves upon the final episodes of season 5, Man on Fire relegated the supernatural-wacky-doodle stuff to the subplot, to instead focus on Damon’s only friend hell-bent on revenge. It’s been a season of characters being forgotten, left behind, abandoned, and Enzo locked in a cage for 70 years might get top prize for most hard done by.

Vampire Diaries In Review: Resident Evil (EP518) - Trouble in ParadiseIf there’s one thing we’ve learned from this show over the past five seasons, it’s to never trust a prophecy. Resident Evil marks the directorial debut of Paul Wesley, and the guy got stuck with not only presenting us the usual complicated TVD reality, but the Other Side in flux and a fantasy-life world that never was. And luckily for us, he knows exactly what he’s doing.

XXAn episode that will always be known in my heart as the Junkyard One, Rescue Me featured breakups and blonde would-be assassins, tests of character and trust games. And a new crime-fighting trio…

XX Previously on The Vampire Diaries, Elena had a lot of catching up to do. The first few months of college are often something of a blur, but thanks to Katherine, Elena had an awful lot of shenanigans to sort through.

EPISODE RECAPS:

For an episode where Elena had a heck of a lot of catching up to do — made much trickier thanks to Katherine’s parting gift of a werewolf-venom-infused ripper virus — While You Were Sleeping seemed more about providing a bridge from the Katherine arc to the final batch of episodes of the season.

I can only speak for myself, but I think the main thing I don’t like about this season is how exhausted I am with the main trio. At this point we’ve seen every permutation of their romances and their mental states and I frankly do NOT care anymore. I’m just so tired of Damon, Stefan, and Elena. All three can go take an Uber directly into a volcano for all I care. It would be a different story if this season had them moving forward or growing somehow, but in doubling down on the past it’s made them all regress into immature states that I just don’t care to witness after four seasons of forward movement. Fortunately “While You Were Sleeping” suggested that all three of them are starting to feel the same way. Damon and Elena even broke up! (Sort of.) Stefan is definitely headed more in the direction of a certain blonde judgey type. So, fingers crossed, things might be moving forward again?

So… Elena and Damon are cured, Liv is not what she seems and there is ANOTHER Stefan doppleganger out there.

The departure of Katherine Pierce leaves The Vampire Diaries with some seriously huge stilettos to fill. She basically singlehandedly saved season five, ripping it out of the narrative doldrums it threatened to sink into before she arrived on the scene. But now that she’s gone—taking her infectious turn as an Elena impersonator with her—will the show be able to keep the momentum her story arc started alive?

Nina Dobrev as KatherineWith the necessary mourning period come to an end, it’s time to talk about just what made Gone Girl such a season stand-out episode — despite the fact that that ending means a certain spark has been extinguished from the TVDverse, perhaps forever.
