Looks like we have a webisode series to tie in to the show. Titled A Darker Truth, it follows a guy named Jason searching for his sister’s killer in Mystic Falls. We get a nice peek at the interior of the Mystic Grill, learn that Zach is indeed 100%-for-sure Zach Salvatore, and…well, you can watch it to learn the rest.

Matt and StefanHeroine TV has posted an interesting article comparing morality in the Vampire Diaries and the Whedonverse (Buffy, Angel and Firefly) and how there are a lot of positive similarities between them. It wins me over for giving a Matt Honeycutt scene some serious love, but even without that it’s well worth a read. ;)

We’ve had word from Ian Somerhalder Italy that the Vampire Diaries will be airing in Italy on “Mediaset Premium“, likely from December. It should be airing at some point in 2010 on public television channel “Italia 1“.

You can vote for the TV series that you’re most looking forward to in YouTube’s Fall Preview. Aside from the Vampire Diaries there are a whole lot of trailers for a large number of shows for you to take a look at. Personally, I’m boggling over the fact that ‘Paranormal Cops’ is an actual TV show.

A quick reminder that reprints of The Awakening and The Struggle with the TV series tie-in covers should be available from today. For those of you wanting to read the books before the TV series airs on September 10th, now is the perfect time to go and buy them.

Finally, as we’ve mentioned before, the CW and the Red Cross are joining forces to promote blood drives in over 230 schools and college campuses across the United States; you can read the CW press release about it on the Futon Critic. Tomorrow (Wednesday, August 26th) there will be a blood drive taking place at the Ball Room at Georgia Tech. Cast members Ian Somerhalder, Kayla Ewell, Michael Trevino and Steven R. McQueen will be there from 9-10 am, and you can book an appointment to give blood here on the Red Cross website. If you’re in the United Kingdom, please consider finding a donation centre in your local area and giving blood, too.

Starve a Vampire. Donate Blood.

If you do decide to starve your vampire in order to donate, we urge caution until the next time you’ve been able to properly feed them. They tend to get a little tetchy without a regular meal of blood. ;)

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThe New York Times has a piece on the CW’s marketing strategy behind The Vampire Diaries television series:

CW begins an ambitious campaign this week to promote a new series for the 2009-10 TV season, “The Vampire Diaries.” The campaign includes offbeat elements intended to attract attention, which include a blood drive, giveaways of mock products like “fang floss” and online games.

We’ve already seen the The Vampire Diaries: Race Against the Dawn flash game around, and had hints of a wide-scale blood drive campaign, but this is the first we’re hearing of “sunscream” and “fang floss.”

Matt Diamond, chief executive at Alloy, which is a producer of “The Vampire Diaries,” said he was encouraged that CW executives were selling the series as “a good show that has vampires in it” rather than as a vampire-fest.

“We’re not naïve,” said Mr. Diamond, whose company publishes the “Vampire Diaries” books on which the series is based and is in business with CW on the “Gossip Girl” hit series. “If vampires become yesterday’s news, there will be an element of the show that will not be as popular.”

Update: We’ve got pictures of the Fang Floss and Sunscream in the gallery now.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesInteresting tweet from the Futon Critic:

  • Friday, September 11th at 8/7c.
  • Sunday, September 13th at 8/7c.

Was just taking a gander at the official CW Vampire Diaries page and was thrilled to spot this at the bottom of the About section:

CW TVD website screencap

That’s right, you can read The Awakening in its entirety for free over at HarperTeen. This may have been there for a while, but it’s the first we’ve noticed it, so – very cool! This is also our first look at the inside pages and it looks like the typography carries over from the 2007 omnibus editions, with the only notable difference being the use of the TV series’ font on the title page.

And a reminder that the new single-volume editions of The Awakening and The Struggle (with TV tie-in covers) come out this Tuesday, August 25th!

Another interesting tidbit: Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood Daily had a post yesterday about “awareness studies” run by Nielsen, and while there are all sorts of caveats that come with it, the results for The Vampire Diaries are interesting. Read the post over at DHD for the context.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThe CW’s behind-the-scenes maven @LilMissX posted a Vampire Diaries set photo of Paul and Ian (and Marcos Siega) this afternoon. Check the photo out here. As one of our Twitter followers put it: “Paul and Ian are really starting to look like brothers to me. It’s kind of awesome.”

The Paley Center for Media will be holding the PaleyFest: Fall TV Preview Party for the CW on Monday, September 14th, starting at 6 p.m., in Los Angeles. This event is open to the public and features a reception, preview panels with the network’s stars, followed by screenings of all CW pilots (The Vampire Diaries, along with Melrose Place and The Beautiful Life). Admission to the event is FREE but you’ll need to make reservations on the Paley Center website (seating is first come, first served). We don’t know who from the cast will be there at this point, but we’ll keep an eye out. There will be a similar set of screenings in New York City on September 14th, but only the pilot screenings themselves are open to the public. Receptions are Members-Only.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThanks to The Futon Critic for the heads up on a CW press release announcing “The CW Fall 2009 Preview Special.” Laura Leighton and Thomas Calabro of Melrose Place will give viewers “a sneak peek into the world of vixens, vampires, models and more.” Shows highlighted include Melrose Place, The Beautiful Life, Life UneXpected (mid-season), and of course The Vampire Diaries. No word on whether we’ll get a peek at any footage not available online already, but we can hope. The special airs on Sunday, August 30th, 6:30-7 p.m. ET.

And a quick thanks to everyone sending in photos of Vampire Diaries advertising – from the subways, phone booths, and bus stops of New York to the billboards, buses, and elevator doors of Los Angeles. Very cool to see.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesIn case some of you aren’t following Vampire Diaries supervising producer/director Marcos Siega on Twitter, he was kind enough to post a photo of Paul and Nina during a “beautiful scene” on Friday night. Moonlight, a fountain…certainly looks romantic from where we sit.

Speaking of Twitter, Julie Plec is just a little bit evil – and we love it.

In case you missed our update to the previous post: My sound card was down when the “Squeamish” promo hit, otherwise I would have been sure to tell you sooner that the track used is “Hang You from the Heavens” by The Dead Weather. (Yes, it has me very excited – it’s shaping up to be my album of the year. And yes, I keep track of these things.) Jack White’s ending up with quite the TVD connection, what with the Raconteurs’ “Consoler of the Lonely” used in the pilot n’ all.

Thanks to Vampire Diaries BG for the heads up on a new photo of Nina from the Love Sucks photo session.

Love Sucks: Elena

And if you haven’t checked out the official Vampire Diaries site over at CW.com lately, go take a look! They’ve updated with shots from the Greystone Mansion shoot, cast bios (not for everyone yet), videos, and more. Participate in the Vampire Diaries forum, fan the official TVDtv Facebook page, and generally make merry.

Marguerite MacIntyreThe population of Mystic Falls is shaping up! Buckle up – we have a chunk of casting info for you today, confirmed by a reliable source:

Marguerite MacIntyre, perhaps best known for her role as Nicole Trager on Kyle XY, has been cast as Sheriff Forbes in The Vampire Diaries. Yes, that’s right, Caroline’s mother is the Mystic Falls sheriff. How kick ass is it to have a woman be the face of The Law in this particular town? Very.

As for Tyler’s parents: Robert Pralgo, whom you may recognize from Army Wives, will be Mayor Lockwood, and Atlanta-born Susan Walters will play Mrs. Lockwood.

Chris Johnson, of South Beach, will be Logan Fell (formerly known as Logan Mills in the casting call posted some days back). If you’ve read the books, you know why we’re particularly intrigued by this new character.

Robert Pralgo as Mayor Lockwood Susan Walters as Mrs. Lockwood Chris J. Johnson as Logan Fell

And we’re happy to say that despite his lack of mention in the official CW press release, Chris William Martin is still kicking around the Salvatore Boarding House as Zach, probably in a very snazzy sweater.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesLooks like we may have some finalized episode titles, via Spoiler TV:

Episode 1.01 – Pilot
Episode 1.02 – Night of the Comet
Episode 1.03 – Friday Night Bites

As always, there seems to be some weirdness with how episodes are numbered, with the pilot either being referred to as 100 or 101, and so on down the line. In any case, nice to see that “Friday Night Bites” was cleared with the network.
