The Vampire Diaries fandom is small by Twilight juggernaut standards, but we’re an especially fierce bunch. You only have to read through the comments on this blog (and on LiveJournal, Facebook, IMDb, Amazon, Twitter, MySpace, the Devil’s Playground, the Vampire Diaries discussion forums, various fansites and entertainment blogs/boards, and even on the official Alloy book site) to understand just how passionate we can be.
The possibility of a TV show has undoubtedly put a spotlight on the series. Some may even be discovering for the first time that we’ve been plugging along online for well over a decade, or that there is even a fandom to begin with. We’re seeing older fans come out of the woodwork, new fans just discovering the books, and of course curious folk from all over wondering what’s up with this TV show and the book series it’s supposedly based on.
So we here at vampire-diaries.net feel now is the perfect time to highlight the characters, quotes, and moments that are iconic in this fandom; the bits and pieces of canon that are important to us, and made us all fans in the first place. We’re calling this little venture “Fell’s Five” (because – well, we couldn’t think of a better title). Every week (until you, or we, get bored) we’ll tick off a Top Five list – based around a theme – of all the little things we love about The Vampire Diaries. And we hope you will join in on the fun.
Since Damon is on the fandom brain lately – shocking, we know – we’re kicking things off with a theme inspired by a recent conversation on Twitter. Below the cut: our picks for top five Damon quotes. Warning: Spoilers for the Original Series, ahoy!

We’ve been wanting to feature guests posts here at Vampire-Diaries.net since we founded the site and A.M. Hartnett, who follows us on Twitter, provided the perfect impetus to kick off the venture. Beware of spoilers through Nightfall!
I love the CW. They’ve given me Jensen, Jared, and Jeffrey Dean, not to mention the five seasons of Angel, and for that they shall always hold a special place in my heart. However, they seem to be walking a very thin line when it comes to The Vampire Diaries. We could be treading into angry-ex territory very quickly.
You see, back when I was about 14/15 years old I read L.J. Smith’s series. When I was in university I used to joke about how I didn’t become a woman when I hit puberty, but instead when I read Wuthering Heights. A re-read of The Vampire Diaries reminded me of the error of this statement. Heathcliff Earnshaw hit the right buttons, but Damon Salvatore got there first.

L.J. Smith has written two short Vampire Diaries stories that are now available on the stories page of her website. The first is “Matt & Elena: First Date” (set around a year before The Awakening), and the second is “Bonnie & Damon: After Hours” (set during the first trilogy).
Update: The short stories have been removed from L.J. Smith’s website due to an interest from the publishers in producing an anthology of short Vampire Diaries stories.
