KryptonSite gave us some sweet stills earlier this evening, and now we have the official episode description for A Few Good Men, the 15th episode of The Vampire Diaries (thanks, Craig!). Highlight to read or head to the Episode Index:
MELINDA CLARKE (“THE O.C.”) GUEST STARS AS MATT’S LONG-LOST MOTHER — Matt and Caroline are surprised by the sudden reappearance of Matt’s mother Kelly (guest star Clarke). Stefan and Elena are worried about Damon’s new attitude. Damon is asked by Sheriff Forbes to take part in a fund-raising bachelor auction. Alaric discovers shocking secrets from his own past. With help from Jenna and Stefan, Elena is determined to find out everything she can about her birth mother, but the truth may be more than she can handle.
Josh Butler directed the episode written by Brian Young.
The Hollywood Reporter talked with CW President Dawn Ostroff about the upcoming pilot season and she gives her perspective on what The Vampire Diaries adds to the network’s line-up (and even touches on the possibility of a spin-off):
THR: Between the durability of “Smallville,” “Supernatural” and the popularity of “Vampire Diaries,” should the CW head in a more genre-driven direction?
Ostroff: What “Vampire Diaries” has done so well is that it’s not just a genre show, it has romance and humor and friends that feel like family. There are so many elements that work on different levels. So although it is a genre or sci-fi show, it has a lot of other elements that make the show work for all of our audience. We picked up a show called “Be-Twixt,” which is a genre show if you will, but it has many of the same elements.

Thanks to RadarOnline for dropping us a line this morning about their chat with Sara Canning. (Which perked us up, must say. Think the only thing rarer than a Sara interview is a Steven R. McQueen one – cough.) She talks about moving in with Nina Dobrev, adjusting to Atlanta’s decidedly non-Canadian weather, and hints that those meaningful glances between Jenna and Alaric might graduate to…oh, well, who knows with this show? At least she seems to love working with Matt Davis, whom she deems “hysterical.” (But will Jenna come up with a snappy nickname for Alaric? “Scumfell” was a beautiful thing.)
Canning is definitely having fun with her role despite not being one of the high school characters. “I think Jenna is really fun to play because she is a parental figure on the show but is still really young herself,” the 22-year old actress said. “She is really feisty, spirited, and headstrong. And she’s still going through those rough patches with guys.”

The CW had a cocktail party following the TCA panel this past Saturday (Bloody Marys in honor of Vampire Diaries, nice one) and they’ve released some photos from the event, which you can view below, courtesy of Cynthia over at SFUniverse. (That’s CW president Dawn Ostroff with Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder). Note the Love Sucks threesome poster (the other one) – slightly different version than ones we’ve seen before.
@LilMissX has also posted some nice behind the scenes candids from TCA, including shots of Kevin Williamson and Nina, Ian with Dawn Ostroff and Nina and Ian playing with some Vampire Diaries promo goodies.
Lots of recaps coming out of the TCA panel, but this tidbit in particular gave us a good laugh this morning (and we’re begging the PTB to include this on the season one DVD set, por favor) – courtesy of Teen Television, re: on-set bloopers:
Paul: There was that blooper when you [Nina] were Katherine, and you had that really long dress and fell. She was trying to be all sexy.
Ian: Adorable and sexy.
Paul: And then she was “Boys, chase me”.
Ian: And then she like “wham,” and all you just see are her knickers.
Nina: And then I couldn’t get up because it was so much dress that I was just sitting there, like “save me.”
Paul: We’re hysterically laughing. Then we were like, “Are you okay?”
Ian: We didn’t even help her! It’s on camera. [She falls] and her petticoat goes up.

The Deadbolt has a feature up on the upcoming Vampire Diaries TV series – not really a review, but an overall look at the show and potential audience. There’s a bit of conjecture about changes from the books and producers’ motivation – hey, I know we’re huuuuge fans of speculation around here, but unless Kevin Williamson or Julie Plec offer up tidbits outright, it remains speculation – and while the article implies that the show will stick to the plot/themes from the original four books, there are a few quotes from CW Network head Dawn Ostroff that contradict that, via IGN (thanks, Lily):
It’s got a lot of romance, a little bit of scares and it’s got some of the mythology that’s very, very dense because the seven books [it's based on] have all the mythology written out. We felt that that would really help in terms of keeping the show different, unique. We know where the show is going. It’s not a guessing game for us.

After the explosion of news, photos, and video these past two days, you’re probably wondering what sort of excitement the CW brought to the upfront party, Vampire Diaries-wise. And the answer would be…yeah, not much. (It’s a bit like the day after Christmas for the fans right now. Or not.)
BUT we did get the synopsis attached to the CW schedule. And running commentary on Twitter from the likes of the LA Times and Michael Ausiello, who at the start of the trailer (not sure if it was the same footage that appeared last night) described it as “90210 with teeth” and then “I take it back. It’s Supernatural with teeth.” Then “Guess I’m investing 2 hours in the CW on Thursdays this fall! Very cool.” (Which then disappeared from his feed, but SupportSPN retweeted it.) And then a final: “Vampire trailer ends. Tim Stack gives me the ‘not bad’ nod. Agreed.”
And it wasn’t just him – seemed like a lot of critics tweeting the upfront started out mocking it and, by the end, were impressed. TVGuide said: “I love me some ‘Lost Boys,’ so CW’s ‘Vampire Diaries’ gave me goosebumps. Gonna be a nice match with Supernatural!”
Who from The Vampire Diaries was there: That we know for sure? Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore – how good is it to type that in context of the TV show?), Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert), Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore), Kevin Williamson (Executive Producer), and Julie Plec (Executive Producer). You can see a photo of the main trio here.
And apparently the talent walked out onstage at the end of the whole shebang? Feel like we missed something in there, but – yes. There it is. We’ll update with details throughout the day.

Marcos Siega has just twittered the news:
It’s official! Vampire Diaries is picked up!
Followed shortly after with a tweet from Kevin Williamson:
Just got a really nice phone call from Dawn Ostroff!!!!
Congratulations to everyone involved!
Update: Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are both running articles confirming the pickup by the CW. THR has something interesting to say:
CW brass is said to be so high on “Vampire” that they are even considering launching the series as a tentpole on Thursday, capitalizing on the built-in sci-fi audience on the night as it is preparing to bid farewell to “Smallville.”
Keep an eye on this blog, we’ll update with more substantial news later when we get it.

There are very few shows on the air right now that are truly close-ended; most are open and ongoing. Even procedurals have gotten a little soapier. Each of the shows we have has a different flavor. “Vampire Diaries” is different from anything else. It’s more like “Twilight” or a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Each episode has a beginning, middle and end.
