Vampire Diaries Mid-Season Return Preview in TV Guide MagazineWe know you’re getting restless for the return of The Vampire Diaries, but TV Guide Magazine comes to the rescue with a brief preview of what we can expect starting Thursday, January 5th with The New Deal (EP310). Here’s a taster from the article (which also mentions Torrey DeVitto‘s upcoming arc and The Vampire Diaries coming in at #4 in the magazine’s Fan Favorites poll) via Julie Plec (out of respect for the UK viewers getting Homecoming next Tuesday, we’ll put it behind a spoiler block):

“Mystic Falls is in the hands of Klaus. Stefan and Klaus want to destroy each other, but they’re unwilling to face the consequences if things go wrong. It is a Mexican standoff.”

The piece also touches on what to expect with Elena, Tyler and Caroline, Alaric, and Bonnie and features a new episode still of Damon and Elena. Pick up the December 8-15 issue (Fan Favorite winner Community on the over) at your local newsstand. Thanks to Denise for the article!

If you’re keeping track, these are post-hiatus episode titles we know so far: The New Deal (EP310), Our Town (EP311), and thanks to director Jeffrey Hunt, we know he’s handling Bringing Out The Dead (EP313). (Speaking of, he’s tweeting from the TVD set, so follow him on Twitter: @HuntVision.)

UPDATE: And we can now confirm that EP312 is titled The Ties That Bind.

The VRO's Vampire Diaries Month highlights: Joseph Morgan & Paul M. SommersThough The VRO’s Vampire Diaries Month kicked off their live interviews tonight with Vampire Diaries’ Director of Photography Paul M. Sommers, hosts Amber and Jess also had an opportunity to do a pre-taped phone interview with Joseph Morgan and they’ve posted the entire conversation on the VRO. A few highlights:

  • On Vampire Diaries fandom: Joseph was keen from the beginning to involve the fans; that’s why he read the books and watched the show. He wanted to be faithful to the Klaus of the books and how the character was talked up in the show; he wanted the character to be everything the fans wanted, to be “on the same page” as the fans. He knows some fans get frustrated with his Twitter teases but he thinks that’s in keeping with the character.
  • On whether Klaus dwells on the past or is very much a man of the present: Klaus is the kind of guy who bears a grudge; he’s too stubborn and too self-involved not to. Joseph and Daniel Gillies talked about Elijah being “the voice of reason” for Klaus. Since they split 500 years ago after Katherine escaped, Klaus has had no one to bring him back down to earth. He hasn’t learned as much as he would have if Elijah had remained at his side. Klaus embraces the modern world and the future, and he believes he is creating the future.
  • On art imitating life: He believes that with any character you play, you bring aspects of yourself to it. Klaus’s playful nature is a reflection of himself, as is his intensity. There are definitely elements of Joseph in there, but on the flip side he has occasionally found himself seeing things through Klaus’s eyes.
  • On the key to Klaus’s undoing: Klaus is incredibly smart and he has a wealth of experience to draw upon, and he’s prepared for every eventuality. But Joseph feels Klaus’s undoing will be his arrogance. He really believes he won’t be crossed, that no one is a threat, and he’s too wrapped up in what will happen after the sacrifice. He needs to stay present and in the moment and be aware.

Joseph talks a LOT more over at The VRO. LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW WITH JOSEPH MORGAN AT THE VRO.

As for the Paul M. Sommers interview… Oh, boy. If you thought you were already anxious about The Sun Also Rises (EP221), then you may need a warm bath and a teddy bear to cling to after listening to this. He also gives fantastic insight into filming The Vampire Diaries, both as Director of Photography and as a director, from script changes to working with the actors and the collaborative spirit that infuses the entire production. Oh, and on-set pranks and shenanigans. A few highlights:

  • On The Sun Also Rises (this Thursday’s episode), his first turn as a director on TVD: Everyone was very supportive and patient, and he found that the experience was hard but not as hard as he thought it would be. He was able to see the script earlier than normal and he had time to prepare. It’s the biggest episode they’ve done this year and a lot of story lines will be wrapped up.
  • On Season 3: He’s as much in the dark about next season as everyone else. He doesn’t think Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson know either and they’ll be working the story out.
  • On Daniel Gillies and Joseph Morgan: Both incredibly committed and gifted actors. The Sun Also Rises will feature them both prominently. Gillies very much understands Elijah. Had a lot of fun working with Joseph on episode 221 in particular and they share a lot of cultural references. They’ve talked a lot about Klaus, his history, and the relationship between Klaus and Elijah.
  • Sad, heartbroken, and mad: Fans will be all of the above. Some people are going to be very upset, but “it’s a great ride.” As I Lay Dying will set up a lot of Season 3, but The Sun Also Rises will be the conclusion of a lot of this season’s stories.

It’s really a great hour, so LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW WITH PAUL M. SOMMERS AT THE VRO.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesMarcos Siega – Vampire Diaries’ Season 1 supervising producer, fresh off a two-episode directing stint for the show – returns to The VRO to talk TVD and more this Friday, December 3rd, 9pm EST. Jessica and Amber are taking questions for Marcos over on The VRO forum, so chime in with your questions! (Coincidence that Marcos returned to direct Tyler’s Big Episode, aka By the Light of the Moon? Kinda funny considering he talks about the difficulties of doing werewolves well in the Vampire Diaries Season 1 DVD special features. We can’t wait to see the final result.)

The official network synopsis for Memory Lane, the very first flashback episode of Vampire Diaries Season 2, has emerged. The episode was directed by Rob Hardy (first time TVD director, previously worked on Criminal Minds) and written by Caroline Dries. Spoilery, so highlight to read at your own risk or check it out in the Episode Index:

DAMON MAKES A DANGEROUS ENEMY — Stefan (Paul Wesley) takes drastic measures to find out the real reason Katherine (Nina Dobrev) has returned to Mystic Falls, and is shocked when she reveals new secrets about what really happened in 1864. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tries a new tactic to resolve his issues with Mason, (guest star Taylor Kinney)…. but it proves costly. Tyler (Michael Trevino) pushes Mason to tell him the truth about the Lockwoods. Finally, when Katherine delivers an ultimatum, Stefan and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are left with very few options. Sara Canning, Candice Accola, Zach Roerig and Matt Davis also star.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesWe see trouble on the way… Late last night/early this morning, Michael Trevino posted an eerie shot of the woods, along with what we’re pretty sure is confirmation that Season 2′s third episode is titled Bad Moon Rising. He definitely confirmed the ep’s director, Patrick Norris, who has worked on Friday Night Lights, Chuck, and Gossip Girl, amongst many other shows.

As far as we can tell, this new Season 2 footage was included in the CW’s preview program of its upcoming show roster. It’s a rollercoaster ride of a 20 seconds, so hang on tight. Thanks to The Vampire Diaries: Blood Falls.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesAs many of you have undoubtedly heard by now, The Vampire Diaries is a contender in the People’s Choice Awards. We first relayed their potential nomination in the Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show category weeks ago and encouraged you to vote – and vote you did! The Vampire Diaries not only made it into that category – where it’s up against Heroes, Lost, Supernatural, and True Blood – but it’s also up for Favorite New TV Drama (along with Eastwick, FlashForward, Melrose Place, Mercy, The Forgotten, The Good Wife, Three Rivers, NCIS: Los Angeles, and V). We think you know what to do: VOTE!

UPDATE: Looks like the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category is mobile-only. Sorry for the confusion!

TV Guide’s MegaBuzz has another Kevin Williamson-sponsored tease for upcoming episodes:

“We have another flashback episode scheduled,” says executive producer Kevin Williamson. “We’re going to learn more about the night [Stefan and Damon] died.” This flashback will give us more information about Katherine, which will eventually lead to a surprising reveal about the Elena doppelgänger.

Thanks to Denise for hooking us up with a few scans from the upcoming issue of TV Guide Magazine. First up, we have the inclusion of Vampire Diaries in a piece on how vampire shows are “hotter than hell,” and then a piece from Matt “I talked so much smack about this show after the pilot” Roush in which he changes his tune – for the most part.

Thanks to Marcos Siega for clarifying the director line-up for the next handful of Vampire Diaries episodes. J. Miller Tobin (Supernatural, Cold Case, did we mention Supernatural..?) is helming episode 11, the aforementioned Liz Friedlander will direct episode 12 (we incorrectly said episode 11 – oops!), Mr. Siega himself will step back behind the camera for episode 13, and Julie Plec mentioned some time back that Vampire Diaries editor Josh Butler will handle directing duties for episode 14 (re: production code 113).

Zap2it’s Korbi Ghosh spoke to Kevin Williamson about the Vampire Diaries. He confirms that Vicki’s fate is for real, and that in tonight’s episode secrets are revealed and we’ll see some backstory about Stefan and Bonnie, as well as getting to know some other characters a little more. For the iPhone users reading this, you can watch the video on YouTube.

By The Book recently interviewed L.J. Smith, and the article touches a range of subjects, from her own writing and inspirations to her thoughts on the Vampire Diaries TV series. You can read the entire interview over at By The Book.

BTB: Are you currently working on any new projects?

Smith: Oh, yes! I’ve just begun the third book in the new Vampire Diaries Trilogy, titled Midnight. The second book in this trilogy, Shadow Souls, will be out in March, 2010. And then I am working on the last book in the Night World series, titled Strange Fate, which doesn’t have a firm publication date yet. In addition I have on the back burner a book called Brionwy’s Lullabies, which is set in a world that is ruled by dragons. And of course I hope to write some more Vampire Diaries books as well!

Thanks to Katerina Graham for confirming that David Barrett (Smallville, Moonlight, The Cleaner) is currently directing episode 10, “The Turning Point”.

Great news for Portugal via the folks over at Crónicas Vampíricas. The Vampire Diaries TV series is set to premier on Saturday, November 7 at 3:30pm on RTP 1. Malaysian fans can also look forward to seeing the show in 2010 on 8TV. Now, if we could just get a more concrete UK airdate (yes, ITV, we’re looking at you), I’d be a happy bunny.

Finally, many thanks to Amanda for sending us scans of a Vampire Diaries feature in Blast Presents Fantasy Films New Moon Edition (which is out today), and to Faran for the scans of an article in the Toronto Star. You can see the articles in the gallery.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThe Vampire Diaries Wednesday night re-run spree continues with an encore of last week’s episode, Haunted. And Thursday brings a brand new ep: 162 Candles. Talk about both in the discussion forum, where the back and forth is already in full swing (seems a lot of people aren’t sure what to make of Lexi). Oh, and you can still chime in on the Haunted poll, of course.

If we told you how many hits this humble website receives off “vampire diaries music” keyword searches alone, you’d be more than a bit surprised. Hell, we still boggle at it and we’re total music junkies. TV Guide Magazine has taken note of the show’s unique soundtrack and chats with Julie Plec about the challenges and song choices thus far:

“There’s something about the indie artists that really works well for our vibe,” says co-executive producer Julie Plec, stressing that the tunes heard in Vampire Diaries aren’t just background music, but help advance the romance and drama of Damon, Elena and Stefan.

What’s your favorite song from the series so far? (Our picks? Red loved Sea Wolf’s “You’re a Wolf” from Friday Night Bites and the Submarines’ “Brightest Hour” during Bonnie’s candle-lighting scene in Family Ties. I personally loved White Lies’ “Death” from the pilot, and I especially liked how the Black Keys’ “Strange Times” and that Moby cover of New Order’s “Temptation” were used in Friday Night Bites. Actually, we’re both in agreement that FNB has the overall best songlist. Agree? Disagree?) Props to series music supervisor, Chris Mollere.

Marcos Siega announced that Liz Friedlander – who’s also been known to direct a music video or two, including one for Blink-182 – will be taking over TVD directing duties. We believe she’ll be helming episode 11 (#110).

And, finally, TV Guide’s Mega Buzz has a “WTF?” tidbit about an upcoming character development that’s sure to set all of you buzzing for all sorts of different reasons (please don’t forget your spoiler tags in the comments!):

Witches and vampires aren’t the only supernatural creatures in Mystic Falls. It won’t be right away, but a major male character will reveal himself to be a werewolf. And don’t think having read the books will help you figure this one out. In fact, the werewolf in question won’t even know he’s a werewolf, initially at least.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesFirst up, a reminder: Michael Trevino will be guesting on Buzzworthy Radio tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET. The call-in number is (646) 595-4228. Jasmine Guy will be on Stardish Radio 8 p.m. ET, and that call-in number is (347) 945-5423. They’ll both be answering fan questions, so start thinking of what you want to know about Tyler and Grams – maybe there will be some goodies, eh?

Friday Night Bites is now available for your viewing pleasure on the official CW Vampire Diaries page. (USA only.)

We have a title for episode 8 (#107) – you can check it out in the Episode Index. The episode is written by Barbie Kligman and Gabrielle Stanton, and stepping in for directing duties this time around is Rick Bota. Bota’s credits include Jericho, Raising the Bar, and Close to Home.

Seems Logan isn’t the only Fell hanging around Mystic Falls – we have a Franklin Fell making an appearance, played by Jackson Walker. We’re not sure of his relation to Logan, but there be Fells! That sound you hear is our squee button being pushed – even though the Animal Control van is always there to remind us not to get too attached to various characters. “Anyone, anytime, anyplace” – right?

Vampire Diaries Spoilers have posted some stills from episode 6, “Lost Girls”. Update: We have bigger, better quality versions now. They can be found in the gallery in the Lost Girls album.

In episode seven news, Ernest Dickerson (Dexter, Burn Notice) is at the helm directing the episode, and we’ve seen the title “Haunted” pop up in a few places. There’s also a still from it (courtesy of @LilMissX) with Stefan and Damon looking like they’re not at each other’s throats for once.

Elena and Stefan are up for the Hollywood Style People’s Choice Awards hottest Fall couple. Head on over there to cast your vote for them, and you’ll make Nina Dobrev a very happy lady in the process.

Katerina Graham posted a picture of herself from when she auditioned for Bonnie, and Michael Trevino posted a picture of Tyler’s car. Alas, Michael isn’t posing on the hood in the pic, but it’s still a sweet looking car. We can certainly picture Tyler behind the wheel.
