Today’s the day, people. The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Second Season is now available at your favourite local store, online, and probably at the end of rainbows.
We’d planned on posting this earlier, but have been waiting a bit to try and work out just what on earth has been going on with that danged Target bonus disc. We’re still not entirely sure, and poor Kate is a gibbering wreck who flinches at the sight of bonus discs now, but we can hazard a guess. As far as we can tell now, the bonus disc comes with both the DVD and the Blu-ray. Early reports suggested that the Blu-ray edition didn’t come with a bonus disc, but we think what may have happened there is that some people were getting the regular edition from Target and so missed out on the bonus disc. We have no idea if this is a nationwide thing or just a few stores, but we do know it’s possible to get the bonus disc on both DVD and Blu-ray from Target. Just check carefully to see what you’re getting – there should be a sticker on the front to let you know. THE BONUS DISC IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN STORES, NOT ONLINE.
Also, on a related note, we’ve heard some reports that some stores in areas that were affected by Hurricane Irene hadn’t had deliveries yet. They’ll get there eventually!
Added by Kate: We’d held off on posting this, too, because of all the confusion, but I have now confirmed with my own eyes that the Target bonus disc is the 2010 Comic-Con panel Q&A (moderated by Marcos Siega), nicely edited with clips from both seasons one and two interspersed. After the panel, there’s a really nice series of clips in which Kevin, Julie, and the cast thank the fans for their support. And, as commenter Rebeccastar points out, the U.S. version does come with a booklet, unlike the U.K. version.
Added by Red: There’s been some confusion over this, so for the sake of international fans, Target is a chain of stores in the USA. The bonus disc is an extra for customers buying from Target stores and not available elsewhere.
Added by Kate: Some sets sold at HMV in Canada have the disc as well.

As we tweeted, Target’s Sunday ads announced that their release of The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Second Season on DVD includes “45 minutes of exclusive content.” We can now confirm that this is a bonus disc “featuring exclusive Comic-Con Panel Q&A” from San Diego.

This time last year I was reviewing The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season on DVD, and now I’m reviewing the second season on DVD. Time certainly seems to fly in this series, right? Unless we’re stuck in the middle of a hiatus, of course.
The following review is based on the UK DVD set. As far as we’re aware, both the DVD and Blu-ray editions in the UK and the US will have the exact same features, so what I’m reviewing is most likely what you’ll be getting regardless of what version you purchase.

During the CW panel at the Television Critics Association press day today, new CW president Mark Pedowitz commented on the lack of an additional episode order for The Vampire Diaries (which had some fans up in arms last night). Turns out keeping Vampire Diaries Season 3 to 22 episodes was by Kevin Williamson’s request. Via @TVGMSchneider:
Kevin Williamson didn’t want to do more than 22 episodes of the #VampireDiaries which is why it didn’t get more eps like other #thecw shows.
The reason? TVD’s tight production schedule and the wish to not sacrifice the show’s quality for quantity. No reason to panic.
To read more about Pedowitz’s comments, you can read select tweets on the @tvdnews timeline and head over to Zap2It for a breakdown. Pedowitz touched on watching the show (he’s halfway through Season 1), DVD sales for TVD (question for the WB, but he thinks it does well), and whether additional L.J. Smith works are in development (he doesn’t think so – and we think that’s highly unlikely).
Kat Graham and Kevin Williamson represented The Vampire Diaries at last night’s TCA CBS/Showtime/The CW party. Check out photos of Kat below (UPDATE: Added a few pics of Kat, Kevin, Thomas Dekker, and CW president Mark Pedowitz courtesy of Kat Graham Source and the CW Network):
