For those of you anxiously awaiting the second volume in the Vampire Diaries: The Return trilogy, HarperTeen has posted the first chapter of Shadow Souls on their website. (Link will open as a .pdf, so if you need Adobe Reader, here you go.) Yep, that’s a 16-page preview before the book’s release on March 16th. (And if you’re a Kindle fan, you’ll have access on March 1st.)
If you missed the first Shadow Souls excerpt, posted waaaaay back in April of last year, you can still check it out on AuthSpot: Shadow Souls teaser.
What do you guys think? Looking forward to more Elena/Damon, or are you missing Stefan already?

Well, we tried to be spoiler-free on Twitter, but that went out the window once the cast and production team started tweeting their thanks – sorry, West coasters! In case you’re not on Twitter (le gasp!), everyone will be happy to know that you voted Vampires Diaries Favorite New TV Drama in the 2010 People’s Choice Awards. Nice job! The award was presented by Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and Kathryn Morris of Cold Case, who added a nice personal touch to proceedings as a lot of Vampires Diaries‘ crew used to work on Cold Case. They accepted the award on behalf of Vampire Diaries since, as you all know, cast and crew are back filming new episodes in Atlanta.
TVD cast and crew had this to say on Twitter:
Wow! Congrats to all my Vampire Diaries family! And thanks Kathryn for the shout out!
holy shit, we won??? Wow. And to think I only voted 243 times. Thanks, everyone! Way to mobilize.
I’m still in awe that a show w 25% of the competitions’ viewers can win. Really does show the power of fandom (and the TVD Twitterverse)!

Our friends over at Vampire Diaries BG have been awesome enough to share all four of the brand new Bulgarian covers for the Vampire Diaries with us. Many thanks, guys! The Awakening (Пробуждането) is set for publication on the 16th September (having been moved up from October), though there are no dates set yet for the rest of the series. We’ll let you all know as soon as we know the dates ourselves.
These covers use the same half-face theme as many of the recent publications around the world are using at the moment, but we have to point out an interesting and applause-worthy twist: they have Bonnie on the cover of Dark Reunion. Now, how cool is that? Ibis publishers, we salute you!

Sabrina Rojas-Weiss has a new installment of her Book Report: The Vampire Diaries up on MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog. While I think Red will take great exception to what she has to say about Matt (that flag flies high around these parts!), she does list off five reasons why the series will appeal to “Twilighters and Twi-Haters.” She touches on why Elena Gilbert kicks ass and why her friends are awesome, the appeal of Stefan and Damon, and why Fell’s Church is a very interesting place to live.
We also appreciate that she’s unafraid to touch on the series’ faults, too. Read the entire post over on the Hollywood Crush blog.

We’re getting quite a few Twilight fans popping over here (hi guys!), and there are some misunderstandings going on between fans. We think the time has come to clear the air a bit.
First of all, I like Twilight. I loved the first book especially, and really hope that Midnight Sun gets written and published. If anyone was offended by my crack about sparkles in the Vampire Lore 101 article, I apologise. It was never meant to be a dig at Twilight, only a crack at being asked if Vampire Diaries vampires sparkle on a pretty regular basis.
Now, to address a few issues that Twilight fans and Vampire Diaries fans should both be aware of.

L.J. Smith has written two short Vampire Diaries stories that are now available on the stories page of her website. The first is “Matt & Elena: First Date” (set around a year before The Awakening), and the second is “Bonnie & Damon: After Hours” (set during the first trilogy).
Update: The short stories have been removed from L.J. Smith’s website due to an interest from the publishers in producing an anthology of short Vampire Diaries stories.
