If you’ve ever been moved to tears by The Vampire Diaries, take comfort in the fact that you’re not alone: Executive Producer Julie Plec picks her eight favorite TVD “cry” moments for Entertainment Weekly‘s 2011 round-up, and chances are at least one of your picks is also on her list. (We know quite a few of them have been mentioned in recappers’ Top 3 Moments.) Julie not only talks about the moments themselves but gives insight into how some of them came to be, the themes at work within the overall story of The Vampire Diaries, and why she cries every time she hears Birdy’s “Skinny Love.”
I think that our most successful emotional moments on the show — I go back and look at Rose’s death, when Damon has to put her out of her misery — they’re all very human, real moments. It’s a guy who just needs to hear the voice of his touchstone, of the love of his life, to let him have a better day. It’s about a girl wanting to be reunited with her mother who she was lost from. It’s about a woman admitting at first she’s afraid, but then that she’s okay to die, and a guy who has intimacy issues being willing to end it for her so she can have peace. It’s all rooted in very simple and very primal human emotional instincts, which I think is why it strikes people in their gut a little.

Who loves speculation? We do! We’ve had a blast speculating about the Originals and all the mythology that seems connected with them. This week’s Vampire Diaries Bite from TV Guide gets us ready for tonight’s time warp, and recaps a few of the important facts and popular theories about the Original family.
If you have thoughts or theories that you’ve like to share, you can send them to Robyn Ross at tvdbite@tvguide.com. You might find your thoughts included on a future edition of The Vampire Diaries Bite!

This week, we arrive at the long-awaited Original flashback, Ordinary People. There’s no contest this time, just a giveaway where the winners will be chosen at random from the qualified entries. One grand prize winner will receive: The Season 3 promo mini-poster pictured here, signed by Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder and Joseph Morgan. Two runners-up will win unsigned Season 3 promo posters. And we’ll even throw in some extra TVD goodies, too. Wanna play?
THE RULES:
- This contest is open to international fans so EVERYONE can play!
- You must have a Twitter account and be following both @tvdnews and @CW_Network. (It’s important because we’ll be DMing the winners!)
- Copy and paste this into a tweet: Bring on the #TVDOriginals! Watch Vampire Diaries: Ordinary People this Thursday, Nov 3 at 8/7c on the CW! Then hashtag your personal favorite Original so far and add that to the tweet. EXAMPLE, your final tweet should look something like this: Bring on the #TVDOriginals! Watch Vampire Diaries: Ordinary People this Thursday, Nov 3 at 8/7c on the CW! #TeamKlaus (or #TeamElijah, etc. It must be one of the known or rumored Originals; other entries will not count.)
- Double check you have BOTH hashtags in your post! We’ll be tracking entries through the #TVDOriginals hashtag but if your tweet is missing your #Team tag, we won’t count it.
- You have until Thursday, November 3rd at 8pm Pacific to tweet your entries.
- Winners will be chosen at random and notified via DM by Tuesday, November 8th and will be announced on the blog when we do our Homecoming contest post on Wednesday, November 9th.
- Enter as many times as you’d like. And have fun! UPDATE: Please only use one Twitter account. If we discover you’re using multiple accounts, we will disqualify you.

This fandom is THE BEST. We weren’t sure the G.H.O.S.T. game would come anywhere near the level of awesomeness of the O.M.F.G. entries, but you guys proved us wrong and made us proud. If we’ve learned anything from these two games, it’s that TVD fans have a take-no-prisoners approach to anything involving an acronym. Well done!
There were so many excellent, clever and downright hilarious entries that we agonized over the decision, but the winning entry eloquently stated what we’ve ALL been thinking since the third season began. And the winner is…

Our first runner up sounds a little exasperated.

Our second runner up sent the entire V-D.net team into hysterics with this gem:

Congratulations to our winners! We can’t just leave it at that, though. There were so many great entries that we just had to put some more of our favorites out there for the world to see. Make sure to put down your beverages before you read these, or we can’t be responsible for the results.
SEE MORE OF OUR FAVORITES HERE! ENJOY!

The 2012 People’s Choice Awards may not air until January, but the voting is officially on! This is your official reminder that Vampire Diaries fandom needs to vote hard for our show and cast in this year’s People’s Choice Awards. The show airs LIVE on Wed., Jan. 11, 2012, 9-11pm ET on CBS and we want to see TVD on that ballot. We’re in the nomination phase now, where the top five official nominees (those listed) and write-in votes (more on that below) are voted on by fans and then whittled down to five official nominees in each category.
The top five in each category will become the official nominees and will be announced on November 8, 2011 at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills during the annual PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS press conference.
We’ve listed the official Vampire Diaries nominations below, as well as the categories that could definitely use some TVD love. REMEMBER: YOU CAN VOTE AS MANY TIMES AS YOU’D LIKE. Mobilize and get the word out, people! The show needs our votes!
VOTE:
- THE VAMPIRE DIARIES IN FAVORITE NETWORK TV DRAMA
- IAN SOMERHALDER IN TV DRAMA ACTOR
- THE VAMPIRE DIARIES IN FAVORITE SCI-FI/FANTASY TV SHOW
But your job is not done, fandom! You can write-in a nomination in each category, so let’s represent for the entire Vampire Diaries cast, shall we? All you have to do is click OTHER and type in the name of who you’re nominating. We’ve made it easy – just click each cast member below to go directly to their relevant category and write them in!
NOMINATE:
- NINA DOBREV AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTRESS
- PAUL WESLEY AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTOR
- CANDICE ACCOLA AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTRESS
- JOSEPH MORGAN AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTOR
- MICHAEL TREVINO AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTOR
- KAT GRAHAM AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTRESS
- ZACH ROERIG AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTOR
- STEVEN R. McQUEEN AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTOR
- MATT DAVIS AS FAVORITE TV DRAMA ACTOR
And we’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest that a certain coffin-ed Original deserves some People’s Choice representation, right?
NOMINATE:
Let’s do this.
