This tidbit is actually five days old but it’s a great nugget, so I’m blogging it now. In the May 17th edition of TV Guide Magazine’s Ask Matt column, a reader asks Matt Roush to address what she perceives as two glaring flaws in The Vampire Diaries: the “lack of kick-ass women” (she specifies that while many of the main female characters are strong emotionally, she wishes they were more physical, “ala Buffy”), and the glossing over of slavery and other social issues in the 1864 flashbacks.
I never expected the show to delve deeply into issues of race and sexuality as True Blood does so well, but it would be nice if the show at least acknowledged that there were other things going on besides vampire vs. human Mystic Falls conflicts.
Here’s part of Roush’s response:
I’m afraid I don’t take the show seriously enough to lament its lack of social/historical context. Where would they fit a lecture on the evils of slavery in a show churning this much juicy melodrama this busily? I suppose it would be interesting if some of the vampire revolt had to do with seeking vengeance against the mores and masters of the antebellum past, but it’s intriguing to me that characters like Bonnie and her grandmother (and their ancestors) nurture a supernatural power that seems to render them pretty “kick-ass.”
READ THE ENTIRE QUESTION AND ANSWER OVER AT TV GUIDE MAGAZINE.
Both of these topics have come up in our forums before, but on the heels of the season finale (oh, hey, Uncle John – you need an ice pack for that?) I thought I could bring it up in the blog. I have my own thoughts on both points (for starters, the idea that a “kick-ass woman” must be defined by her physical bravery, no matter how smart, savvy, or emotionally well-adjusted she is), but I’ll turn it over to you guys. Have your own thoughts on both issues? Agree/disagree with Roush’s reply?

Katerina Graham dropped by to discuss the Vampire Diaries and her music with PIX Morning News. There’s a new sneak peek for Bloodlines featuring Bonnie and Grams, and be warned: discussion is a little bit spoilery for the episode.

The Wrap counts Vampire Diaries as one of Fall’s 6 Buzziest Shows (along with Glee, The Good Wife, Modern Family, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and Parks & Recreation), crediting the show’s success to the current vampire trend, “breakout star” Ian Somerhalder, and a still-growing audience:
The CW’s foresight has been rewarded with the network’s biggest new hit since “Gossip Girl.” Viewers are responding to the show’s juicy storylines, its super-hot cast and the always appreciated sense of humor that showrunner Kevin Williamson (“Scream”) brings to the table.
Direct link to the Vampire Diaries segment.
E!’s Watch with Kristin has confirmed Kelly Hu’s casting (which we tweeted then blogged on Sunday night – thanks to @thetelevixen/Fancast for actually giving us credit on that one). As we suspected, she is indeed playing Pearl, but (as usual) don’t place too much faith in those casting sides:
Kelly will be appearing in flashbacks as an apothecary named Pearl, but contrary to other reports, she doesn’t go door to door and accidentally try to sell vervain to Katherine (Nina Dobrev). We’ll first see her on Jan. 28.
Tweeted this last night, so in case you missed it: E’s Spoiler Chat talked with Jasmine Guy about upcoming episodes:
We just chatted up Jasmine Guy, and she tells us she’s “having a ball” playing Bonnie’s grandmother and will be back sooner or later. She also hinted at a bigger picture storyline arc for the series: “There’s this whole inner life between the witches and the vampires where there’s this pact between the two forces that they won’t expose each other. So I’m excited to explore that.” She also calls the show’s producers “elusive” and that she learns what she’s going to do when she gets on set.
UPDATE: TV Guide’s Mega Buzz has quite the tidbit (highlight to read – it’s definitely spoilery):
What if I were to tell you that Elena will soon find herself in the romantic company of a Salvatore brother not named Stefan? Said Salvatore introduces her to a friend who allowed himself to be “turned” by his vampire lover, which gets the hamster wheels in Elena’s pretty, pretty head spinning.
And if you missed Zach Roerig’s interview with The VRO tonight, never fear: the entire thing is up for your listening pleasure.

Movieline has just posted a fantastic conversation with Katerina Graham and Jasmine Guy that is a must-read for fans of The Vampire Diaries and fans of the real-life women. They each discuss their characters, the witches of Mystic Falls, their careers and influences, and what’s in store.
Is there a different viewer response to the witches than the vampires? Is there pro-vampire, anti-witch backlash?
KG: I haven’t had any backlash, and I think that’s because the character didn’t come off as a witch right away, we got to know and love Bonnie Bennett for who she was. And we’re with her when she discovers her abilities. I know Harry Potter had a backlash from certain groups for glorifying the witch story line, but I haven’t had any at all.JG: To me, people are just curious as to how the witches interact with the vampires. I know some of the folklore, but not a lot of it. It’s interesting to watch the world we’re living in being created. It’s kind of like logging the forest as we step into it, and that’s kind of cool that I don’t what’s going to happen, and neither does my character. So there’s a suspense. I don’t have to think I know what’s going on.
Read the entire (lengthy!) interview.

Seventeen Magazine has a lighthearted Q&A with Candice Accola where she talks about the usual – living and working in Atlanta, hanging with the cast, and why those scripts are on lockdown:
17: Are you on the edge of your seat every time you get a new script?
CA: We actually got in trouble, [but] we’re all blaming Nina [Dobrev] who plays Elena. Nina took the script from the hair and makeup trailer because we’ve been dying to know what will happen next. And then she got caught, and so now, they have scripts on lockdown, and they won’t tell us any information!
And this afternoon had two radio interviews with Vampire Diaries cast members:
The first was BuzzWorthy’s interview with Michael Trevino who, according to many of you on Twitter, had a way better radio voice than the guy interviewing him. (Radio can’t have him, he’s on our TV.) Ends up Michael has also read the books (the first four), hints that perhaps there’s a reason why Tyler is such a jerk and bully (and maybe it has something to do with his parents), and that we might be seeing a different side of Tyler in upcoming episodes (especially when it comes to Vicki). He also played coy on the Lockwood family in general and referred to Mystic Falls’ history having a very real impact on the newest generation. We’re also pretty sure he dropped a super-vague hint about a particular character’s appearance later on down the road. You can listen to the entire interview (half hour) over at BuzzWorthy.
And on Stardish Radio, Jasmine Guy shed a little more light on her upcoming role as Grams, Bonnie’s witchy (and, uh, drunk?) grandmother, whom she apparently has the honor of naming and was soliciting suggestions (which included the Salem-inspired Tituba and Katerina’s suggestion of Sadie). She also revealed the name of Bonnie’s great-great-great-great grandmother (hover to see), Birdy Mae, and said she looks forward to seeing more of not only the race dynamics of the show’s Civil War-era flashbacks, but also the way vampires and witches interact, and what the “rules” will be for the show’s witches. Listen to the interview over at Stardish.
And finally, there’s an itty bitty Paul video snippet over at People.com where he talks about the best thing about growing up in New Jersey.

Seems Logan isn’t the only Fell hanging around Mystic Falls – we have a Franklin Fell making an appearance, played by Jackson Walker. We’re not sure of his relation to Logan, but there be Fells! That sound you hear is our squee button being pushed – even though the Animal Control van is always there to remind us not to get too attached to various characters. “Anyone, anytime, anyplace” – right?

William Keck over at TV Guide Magazine has some more insight into Grams (Bonnie’s grandmother), the role Jasmine Guy is playing on Vampire Diaries (spoilers):
“It’s a timeless role,” explains series executive producer Kevin Williamson. “She looks so young because she’s a witch! She’s a college professor at the local university who teaches the occult. Bonnie starts to think she may be a witch, and it turns out they have a lineage of witches in their family dating back to Salem. Bonnie thinks it’s all crazy until she starts doing things like lighting fires.”
Very interesting.

- Video interview with Julie and Kevin at RadarOnline (starts off with addressing gossip, quickly moves into good stuff).
Per the CW, Kevin Williamson will be dropping by the Apple store in Santa Monica tonight to discuss Vampire Diaries: Apple Store Santa Monica, 1248 Third Street Promenade, Tuesday, September 15, 6 p.m.
