Collider has yet another interview with Joseph Morgan, who discusses Klaus’s read on the Salvatore brothers (and Katherine), what he’d like to see of Klaus in Season 3, and being the newbie on set. He also mentions a few TV shows and films he’s enjoyed in the past few years (and what they have in common), and talks a bit about working with Tarsem Singh (if you haven’t seen The Fall yet, remedy that immediately) and Mickey Rourke on the upcoming film Immortals.
What do you think Klaus thinks of the Salvatore brothers? Does he feel that one is more of a thorn in his side than the other?
MORGAN: Maybe. Damon he just thinks is a loose canon. These guys are 160 years old, and he’s been around for probably 10 times that. At worst, they’re a nuisance to him. I don’t think he really sees either of them as a serious threat. Stefan (Paul Wesley) is more predictable for him because he’s in love with Elena (Nina Dobrev) in a way that is honorable. He can predict what Stefan will do and can manipulate that. Damon is a little more difficult because he is so unstacked. He doesn’t seem to value his own life very much, so he will turn up and say, “I killed your witch, and you can kill me if you want,” and just see what happens. That is probably a little more of a nuisance to Klaus, and also a little more impacting as well. He really puts himself out there and Klaus definitely has a fascination with that. I think there is also a fascination with Katherine because of that.

E!Online has more from the very busy Joseph Morgan and he’s not confirming and not denying a lot of what will go down in tonight’s new episode of The Vampire Diaries. He also talks a bit about Bonnie, Jenna, and Klaus’s (not confirmed, not denied) transformation. Oh, and about that Stefan stuff from last week…
What can you tease about the “interest” Klaus will take in Stefan [Paul Wesley]?
[Laughs.] I’ll tell you what. I’ve been reprimanded for teasing too much in that area already. I’m going to have to begrudgingly apologize and not go any further in this sort of pit that I’ve already gone. I stand by what I said: He will take a special interest.

WetPaint had their own chat with Joseph, touching on the hype leading up to the Klaus casting:
When did you realize how big of a phenomenon TVD was?
Well, the first degree of that was when I first read for the role. I knew I had a callback with the creators of the show, just to talk about it. And I thought, “Okay, I’m just going to do a little bit of research now, I’m going to look up on the Internet whether Klaus was in the books of The Vampire Diaries,” because I knew there were books before [the television show]. And I just typed in “Klaus Vampire Diaries,” and there were pages and pages and pages of “Who’s going to play Klaus?” It was just unbelievable to me, the volume of stuff just on this one character. Suddenly I started to feel like, “Oh, this is kind of a big deal!”

Q. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A. Thank you, really. I said before from the beginning when I joined Twitter and I started asking questions of the fans and people were just so responsive and really helped me with where I needed to go with Klaus, and what kind of things people responded to, and what people found frightening about those things. It really helped me build the character and put it together. I just want to say thanks and keep watching guys because the best is yet to come.

Hollywood Life has a few teases from Vampire Diaries guest stars Michael McManus (Jules) and Lisa Tucker (Greta Martin). First up, Michael McManus has this to say about Jules:
“I don’t think Jules is evil, but I can see why people think that,” she admits. “I just feel very protective of her. I think everything she’s done comes from a place of wanting to safeguard Tyler [Michael Trevino.] You have to put yourself in her shoes. She’s been through a lot too.
And Lisa Tucker talks about working with Joseph Morgan:
“He’s the sweetest guy ever, but he plays such a jerk,” Lisa says — although I think “jerk” might be a bit of an understatement here. “Joseph is fantastic. And his accident his fantastic. He’s just so focused, and you can see that even when the cameras are down, he’s still in character. It’s great to see how dedicated he is, because Klaus is such a vital part of the end of the season.”

Another Thursday, another million interviews… Joseph Morgan’s been making the rounds, doing his part to make us as nervous as humanly (and inhumanly?) possible before tonight’s penultimate episode, The Sun Also Rises. First up, Joseph chats with PopWrap‘s Jarett Wieselman how much fun he’s having playing the bad guy and how everything changes tonight:
PopWrap: In talking about expectations earlier, it’s no secret that this sacrifice has been a major plot point since season one — do you think fans will be pleased with how it plays out?
Joseph: Yes. That said, with the fans you have all these different teams. People who want different outcomes depending whether they’re on Team Stelena or Delena. To some degree everyone wants something different, so it’s hard to say “yes” across the board. But the direction the show takes is one of the most interesting it could have taken. I think although people will be shocked and, in some cases, upset – we know characters we love will die tonight – but at the end of this season, the show becomes bigger. The world is bigger and the avenues that open up are going to be ones that we’re excited to see these characters explore

Do you have a favorite moment that you’ve filmed so far?
Yeah, I loved (laughs) I like so much. I loved all of the stuff that was my first few weeks there — all the flashback stuff. I had wicked fun on that scene with Ian Somerhalder and Alaric last week when he comes to life and I intimidate him. That was a tremendous, lot of fun. And pretty much all of episode 21 was some of the most enjoyable stuff I’ve done in my life. Thursday is when it’s on and I’m so excited to see it.

“I prefer working with Katherine because there’s something more fascinating about her, about her darkness and her malicious side. Elena is so pure and good and righteous. Her morals are intimidating sometimes. You feel like she’s the one turning off the music at the party and telling everyone to go home. Whereas Katherine just wants to keep the party going all night. She’s the one to pull that off, Nina, you know. She brings a very different light to both of them. It’s fantastic.”

Though The VRO’s Vampire Diaries Month kicked off their live interviews tonight with Vampire Diaries’ Director of Photography Paul M. Sommers, hosts Amber and Jess also had an opportunity to do a pre-taped phone interview with Joseph Morgan and they’ve posted the entire conversation on the VRO. A few highlights:
- On Vampire Diaries fandom: Joseph was keen from the beginning to involve the fans; that’s why he read the books and watched the show. He wanted to be faithful to the Klaus of the books and how the character was talked up in the show; he wanted the character to be everything the fans wanted, to be “on the same page” as the fans. He knows some fans get frustrated with his Twitter teases but he thinks that’s in keeping with the character.
- On whether Klaus dwells on the past or is very much a man of the present: Klaus is the kind of guy who bears a grudge; he’s too stubborn and too self-involved not to. Joseph and Daniel Gillies talked about Elijah being “the voice of reason” for Klaus. Since they split 500 years ago after Katherine escaped, Klaus has had no one to bring him back down to earth. He hasn’t learned as much as he would have if Elijah had remained at his side. Klaus embraces the modern world and the future, and he believes he is creating the future.
- On art imitating life: He believes that with any character you play, you bring aspects of yourself to it. Klaus’s playful nature is a reflection of himself, as is his intensity. There are definitely elements of Joseph in there, but on the flip side he has occasionally found himself seeing things through Klaus’s eyes.
- On the key to Klaus’s undoing: Klaus is incredibly smart and he has a wealth of experience to draw upon, and he’s prepared for every eventuality. But Joseph feels Klaus’s undoing will be his arrogance. He really believes he won’t be crossed, that no one is a threat, and he’s too wrapped up in what will happen after the sacrifice. He needs to stay present and in the moment and be aware.

As for the Paul M. Sommers interview… Oh, boy. If you thought you were already anxious about The Sun Also Rises (EP221), then you may need a warm bath and a teddy bear to cling to after listening to this. He also gives fantastic insight into filming The Vampire Diaries, both as Director of Photography and as a director, from script changes to working with the actors and the collaborative spirit that infuses the entire production. Oh, and on-set pranks and shenanigans. A few highlights:
- On The Sun Also Rises (this Thursday’s episode), his first turn as a director on TVD: Everyone was very supportive and patient, and he found that the experience was hard but not as hard as he thought it would be. He was able to see the script earlier than normal and he had time to prepare. It’s the biggest episode they’ve done this year and a lot of story lines will be wrapped up.
- On Season 3: He’s as much in the dark about next season as everyone else. He doesn’t think Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson know either and they’ll be working the story out.
- On Daniel Gillies and Joseph Morgan: Both incredibly committed and gifted actors. The Sun Also Rises will feature them both prominently. Gillies very much understands Elijah. Had a lot of fun working with Joseph on episode 221 in particular and they share a lot of cultural references. They’ve talked a lot about Klaus, his history, and the relationship between Klaus and Elijah.
- Sad, heartbroken, and mad: Fans will be all of the above. Some people are going to be very upset, but “it’s a great ride.” As I Lay Dying will set up a lot of Season 3, but The Sun Also Rises will be the conclusion of a lot of this season’s stories.

Joseph Morgan has been busy this week – and especially today. Following up the Zap2It interview from earlier, we have a few more interviews and it’s sort of amazing these are all refreshingly different! Lots of good stuff so be sure to check them all out, as there are TONS of topics covered, from Klaus to Elijah to this crazy sacrifice ritual. He also has plenty of things to say about his approach to playing a villain, Klaus’ dual nature, who he’d like to cast as the Original Family, and even the music he listens to for inspiration.
You’ve also tweeted something about Klaus’ first victim. Can you tease when we’ll see him take a life? Tonight, maybe?
Let me say this: You’ll get some idea of what he’s capable of in tonight’s episode, but I have to put this out there: The episode that I’m most looking forward to seeing and I’m most looking forward to people seeing is next week’s episode [when the actual sacrifice ritual goes down - Vee note: The Sun Also Rises (EP221)]. I’m going into the studio to do ADR for it tomorrow evening. That’s the one that was a sort of epic undertaking. If I did what I hope I did, what I think I did with the episode, then people are really gonna regard Klaus as the biggest villain ever to grace Mystic Falls.

What makes a good arch-villain?
I think the key is not to be too intense, and not to play too generically evil. I felt like it was clear from the beginning that these guys, the Originals, were all but invincible, all but indestructible. Nothing would be a threat to them. Klaus definitely has a short fuse [so if you upset him, he will become violent]. I think a good villain absolutely should have a playful side and a fun side, and you know, there’s nothing more kind of sinister than someone kind of enjoying something, or reveling in something that is kind of evil. And I really felt that he should be sort of happy. One of the things I kept saying is that it should be kind of terrifying to be in the room with this guy, because you don’t know what he’s going to do, kiss you or kill you.
The fans are asking: Is Klaus “in love” with Katherine?
In all honesty, I think he was never “in love” with Katherine in the way we think of love. When we meet Katherine in the flashback, Elijah said she reminds him of someone. She’s a doppelganger, let’s not forget, of the original Petrova. So Klaus’ plan, when he meets Katherine, is always to sacrifice her. There was never a love attachment, but there was always a fascination with her. I think of it like a cat batting a mouse between its paws. Part of it was probably sexual, part of it was emotional, and the rest was his actual appetite.

Zap2It‘s Carina MacKenzie talks with Joseph Morgan (who finally stepped out in his own shoes last week) about the long-awaited arrival of Klaus, doing his research on the character, playing with the fans on Twitter, and garnering fandom support for the charity Positive Women. He also addresses Kevin Williamson’s description of Klaus as someone who can “out-Damon Damon.”
Ian Somerhalder does something very specific on the show that he’s very good at, and I don’t think anyone could imitate him. I certainly didn’t want to imitate him on the show to out-do him; I didn’t think that was the way to approach it. So I thought, because he’s very expressive with his eyes and he’s very sarcastic, I thought that the way to go up against Ian Somerhalder in a scene, is to play with stillness. I wanted to undercut him and to intimidate Damon with how comfortable Klaus was being there, and to get into his personal space. Rather than try to outdo him at his own game, I felt I had to bring my own game to the table, and make him play on my terms.
