Entertainment Weekly has revealed the cover of Origins, the first novel in HarperTeen’s Stefan’s Diaries TV prequel series. As far as we know, the book is still scheduled for an early November release.
Amazon listings still aren’t sorted, so no link to an easy pre-order for now. We’ll let you know as soon as that changes. In the meantime, you can learn everything we know so far about the series by clicking: Stefan’s Diaries. Includes plot synopses for each book in the trilogy, and more.
So what do you think of the cover? Like the tie-in with the half-face theme? Wish they’d gone with something a little more Civil War-y? Sound off.

There’s been some confusion floating around about Stefan’s Diaries, which Bookseller.com reported as being a prequel trilogy to L.J. Smith’s original Vampire Diaries book series. So imagine our confusion when a reader pointed out this HarperCollins catalog listing:
Now fans can get more of their favorite vampire drama! Written in a diary format from the point of view of smoldering vampire Stefan Salvatore, Stefan’s Diaries tells the story, as depicted on The Vampire Diaries television show, of the love triangle that would change the Salvatore brothers’ lives forever. This trilogy offers new insight into the wildly popular TV series and the epic love story that turned devoted brothers into mortal enemies.
So we emailed HarperTeen for clarification and they were gracious enough to provide us with the following statement for release:
STEFAN’S DIARIES are an exciting new project based on the VAMPIRE DIARIES novels written by LJ Smith and the TV series developed by Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec. The prequel story is based on the lore from the show, taking place during the Civil War.
We’re not entirely sure if the “new Vampire Diaries trilogy” L.J. Smith mentioned in this April 5th blog post is referencing Stefan’s Diaries or not, and we’re not entirely clear on her involvement with this particular project. But at least we know for certain that there will be a book trilogy based on the TV series’ mythology, L.J. Smith is not writing it, and it is due for release on November 2, 2010. You can pre-order it now on Amazon.
Hopefully we’ll have more information soon!

For those of you anxiously awaiting the second volume in the Vampire Diaries: The Return trilogy, HarperTeen has posted the first chapter of Shadow Souls on their website. (Link will open as a .pdf, so if you need Adobe Reader, here you go.) Yep, that’s a 16-page preview before the book’s release on March 16th. (And if you’re a Kindle fan, you’ll have access on March 1st.)
If you missed the first Shadow Souls excerpt, posted waaaaay back in April of last year, you can still check it out on AuthSpot: Shadow Souls teaser.
What do you guys think? Looking forward to more Elena/Damon, or are you missing Stefan already?

And the TV tie-ins just keep coming: HarperTeen has a new round of Vampire Diaries paperback releases coming this year. Interestingly, the last batch of releases (The Awakening and The Struggle on August 25th) was in a slightly-smaller-than-trade format, but two new covers for The Awakening and The Struggle have popped up in “rack” (traditional paperback) format (and will be a dollar more in price at $7.99). Looks like HarperTeen might be bringing the cover design of those two volumes more in line with The Fury and Dark Reunion covers we blogged about in early November, and those release dates remain April 27th and May 25th, respectively. But they will now be preceded by these two new covers on February 23rd and March 30th. You can pre-order all four volumes over on the HarperTeen website or on Amazon. (Click the images to see larger versions in our Gallery.)

And good news for those awaiting the next installment in The Return trilogy, Shadow Souls - Kindle users will have access to the book on March 1st. That’s over two weeks before the book’s regular release on March 16th.

Thanks to Catherine for the heads up – TV tie-in covers for The Fury (April 27, 2010) and Dark Reunion (May 25, 2010) have been revealed by HarperTeen. Click the images to see bigger versions in the Gallery. (BTW – that means “by the way” – we like how the CW stripe says “HIT series” now.)

And yes, we note the weird glare on the Dark Reunion cover. Not sure what’s up with that.

Not sure how this snuck past us, but looks like all four volumes of the original Vampire Diaries series – The Awakening, The Struggle, The Fury and Dark Reunion – were released on audio book on October 27th, with The Return: Nightfall following…today! All volumes are unabridged, narrated by actor Rebecca Mozo, and available for purchase on Audible.com or iTunes. You can find direct links for purchase below (Nightfall not yet available through iTunes). Check out the covers below or in the Gallery.
And Red would like you all to know – being of the British persuasion and all – that it’s been officially confirmed that ITV2 will begin airing The Vampire Diaries in the U.K. this January, rather than just a nebulous “2010.” Which he already figured, but now it’s all OFFICIAL and stuff, which means he can now sip his cuppa and stop making snooty comments. Huzzah!

Was just taking a gander at the official CW Vampire Diaries page and was thrilled to spot this at the bottom of the About section:

That’s right, you can read The Awakening in its entirety for free over at HarperTeen. This may have been there for a while, but it’s the first we’ve noticed it, so – very cool! This is also our first look at the inside pages and it looks like the typography carries over from the 2007 omnibus editions, with the only notable difference being the use of the TV series’ font on the title page.
And a reminder that the new single-volume editions of The Awakening and The Struggle (with TV tie-in covers) come out this Tuesday, August 25th!
Another interesting tidbit: Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood Daily had a post yesterday about “awareness studies” run by Nielsen, and while there are all sorts of caveats that come with it, the results for The Vampire Diaries are interesting. Read the post over at DHD for the context.

You may have noticed that the two most recent Vampire Diaries short stories – Matt & Elena: First Date and Damon & Bonnie: After Hours – have been removed from L.J. Smith’s official website. She provides an explanation in her latest blog post:
Several people have asked why the Vampire Diaries stories had been taken down. The reason is that my publisher is interested in putting them all together as stories from the Vampire Diaries. This is obviously great for me, as a lot of the work has been done already (even on stories as yet to be posted) and ultimately it’s good for my readers as well.
So for those of you who weren’t quick on the draw in snagging “Blood Will Tell”- good news! There’s hope you’ll have it in your hands at some point in the future.
Also, LJS now has a MySpace page. If you want to see several new character portraits by Jan Sovak (including a vampire!Elena) not available on the official site, take a peek through the Pics section of the profile.
