Regular readers may remember me getting a little irate with BuddyTV’s dismissal of Matt Donovan as a boring character back in October. Well, such insinuations have been made again, and this time it’s Zap2It’s Carina MacKenzie stepping up to defend Matt’s honour. Carina recently visited the Vampire Diaries set in Atlanta so she’s got a little help from Zach Roerig, who chats with her all about representing Team Human, and what’s in store for Matt in the future. Be sure to check out the video of the interview at the end of the article!
Secrets, secrets are no fun… without someone to keep them from. “I must say that I am honored to hold down the human fort in Mystic Falls,” Zach jokes. In a town where you can’t sneeze without spraying a vampire, a witch, or a werewolf, Matt remains one of only two regular characters who isn’t in on the supernatural drama.
But being out of the loop doesn’t make Matt boring — it makes him the wild card. (Sexy, right?) We were all shocked when Katherine compelled him to provoke Tyler into triggering the werewolf curse because the twist came out of nowhere, and you can bet that there are more Matt-related game-changers to come.
Thanks to the CW’s Judy Yam, we’ve got a behind the scenes picture from an upcoming episode featuring Ian Somerhalder, Michael Trevino and Paul Wesley looking particularly badass.

CW Source has an entertaining sit down with the cast of Vampire Diaries (specifically Paul Wesley, Sara Canning, Katerina Graham, Steven R. McQueen, and Ian Somerhalder). They give behind the scenes trivia tidbits about scenes they’ve filmed in Season 2 and other fun goings-on.
And here’s another video of Ian talking about the IS Foundation and thanking fans for his birthday wishes.

While there’s been a basic page with a message from Ian up for a short while now, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation website finally went fully live today, complete with news, information and featured campaigns. Be sure to head on over there to buy some funky IS Foundation merchandise (though where are all the men’s tees?!) to contribute to the cause, donate some spare cash, or simply educate yourself about the environmental issues we’re facing today and spread the word to the people you know. Every little bit helps.
Aside from working on his foundation, Ian is also teaming up with Don Cheadle as a spokesperson for the Alliance for Global Conservation, comprised of organisations such as Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Society, and World Wildlife Fund. Carina MacKenzie details it all in her article on Zap2It:
As part of the Alliance, Somerhalder will help to build awareness for the Global Conservation Act, which “would coordinate the work of all U.S. agencies involved in international conservation and establish a national strategy for promoting conservation initiatives that strengthen global security, health and economies,” according to the bill.

Now that By the Light of the Moon has aired, Michael Trevino is able to get even more specific about Tyler’s ordeal on Thursday night, and does just that in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. It’s a fascinating read that really makes you appreciate that Michael went through just as much as Tyler did. Kudos for an outstanding performance from Michael, and also to Candice Accola who was there through it all with him. On top of that, Michael also drops a few hints and teasers about what to expect from Tyler’s storyline in upcoming episodes.
What was the most difficult moment to shoot for you?
I think it was the last scene of the episode for me, when Caroline comes back, and I’m back in human form. That was the last scene that we shot of the whole transformation, and by then, I was just spent. I was just done. I was just exhausted. It was really hard to get there emotionally for what that scene needed at that point.
On the subject of Tyler and his transformation, Julie Plec tells TV Guide about how mythology is getting personal on the Vampire Diaries now:
“One of the things we had to do was make the mythology as personal as we could,” Plec says. “In the beginning it was just folklore legend. The sun-and-the-moon curse didn’t really have an impact on our heroes. It was just informative, but it had a direct and very profound [effect] on how Tyler’s journey was going to work itself out.”
Ian has made it on to the Cosmopolitan Top 20 Hottest Guys of 2010 list. Pretty sure he should be sharing that list with his Vampire Diaries cast mates, because we think our cast have most of the other guys on that list beaten in the hotness stakes. ;)
Finally, congratulations to the winner of our A Visitor’s Guide to Mystic Falls giveaway in partnership with Smart Pop Books. Isabel Torres will be the new owner of the journal and necklace featured on the cover, as well as a copy of the book. Enjoy!

PopWrap‘s Jarett Wieselman rings Kevin Williamson up for a post-mid-season finale wrap-up and a range of topics are discussed, including the vision behind Tyler’s tranformation and where Tyler goes from here, Caroline’s determination to stick it out with Tyler and the fan response to her character this season, who we’re definitely seeing again and who we may not see again, just how worried we should be about what a werewolf bite can do to a vampire, and the surprise of Katherine as a character.
PW: I remember you once said that you love when, in the writing process, a character surprises you. Has that happened at all this year?
Kevin: The one thing that surprised me is Katherine. I always expected her to play into the show in little pieces, little scenes here and there – I didn’t expect her to drive an entire story with her at the center of it. And that’s because of Nina [Dobrev] being so good. Her performance is what made us go there. It’s just too delicious. And I don’t think I would have gone into Bulgaria, with a flashback of her giving birth, unless I really felt like she was a character I wanted to explore.

Zap2It‘s Carina MacKenzie brings us an on-set interview with Ian Somerhalder and she just so happened to get a sneak peek at the brand-spankin’ new sets for Damon’s bedroom/bathroom. (A lot of you were very excited about this when writer Caroline Dries dropped that they were being built during the Vampire Diaries Writers’ Room Live Tweet.) Ian discusses shooting in his birthday suit (funny, because it was his birthday), the launch of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation birthday project, Damon’s snazzy new bedroom, Stefan’s trust in Damon, and the “uphill battle” between Damon and Elena.
Brotherly love trumps girlfriend-stealing, even for Damon Salvatore. Over the last season and a half, Damon has come to the rather reluctant conclusion that he needs his brother. “I think that without him, it poses a major problem. Yes, of course he doesn’t have Stefan to contend with for Elena, but from my perspective he’s done so much sh** to Elena that it’s going to be a very uphill battle with that. Right now, it’s about protecting her.”

The Futon Critic‘s Jim Halterman has more from his interviews with Julie Plec, Michael Trevino, and Candice Accola.
Jim Halterman: Let’s talk about some of the other characters. Elena (Nina Dobrev) is definitely not the damsel in distress anymore. Was that a conscious effort that you wanted to see this year?
Julie Plec: Absolutely. We always want our female characters to have a point of view and be strong but by definition putting the ingenue in jeopardy is a part of the show so how you sort of make her really strong-willed and fierce and stand up for herself… we saw that a lot last season but this season she’s not necessarily letting other people make decisions for her anymore and it’s part of her growth and the way she is taking back her life, which has spun out of control. It’s nice to see Elena take a stand.

It’s that time of year where media outlets begin rounding up their “best of” lists and Vampire Diaries is already receiving much-deserved props. E!Online places Vampire Diaries at #3 on its list of Top 10 TV Dramas of 2010 (yep, above True Blood and Dexter), saying:
Improbably excellent, The Vampire Diaries is addictive and involving television that deserves to be taken more seriously by critics everywhere.
And BuddyTV places Vampire Diaries at #5 on its Top 10 of ’10: Best Shows of the Year:
The Vampire Diaries started off strong in 2009, but 2010 saw the best of the storylines so far. We got Elena’s twisted genealogy, Caroline transformation into the town’s bitchiest vampire and Tyler’s sudden relevance as a werewolf. We also met Katherine. You can’t go wrong with Katherine.
Amen! And speaking of BuddyTV, the guys of Vampire Diaries made an impressive showing in their TV’s 100 Sexiest Men of 2010 list. Here’s how they placed: Taylor Kinney as Mason Lockwood (#59), Michael Trevino as Tyler Lockwood (#48), Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore (#18), and Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore at #1. Well done!
Finally – we’ll be meeting her character Jules for the first time tonight, but Vampire Diaries writer Mike Daniels (who just so happened to write tonight’s episode, By the Light of the Moon) tweeted this morning to announce that guest star Michaela McManus has joined Twitter: @MichaelaMcM. Give her a warm welcome! (We’re reserving judgment on whether her character deserves a warm welcome. For now. This is Mystic Falls, you understand.)

We apologize in advance for all the posts coming your way today. Oh, who are we kidding? You love it. Entertainment Weekly‘s Mandi Bierly caught up with Candice Accola to talk about tonight’s mid-season finale and give a behind-the-scenes peek at how that now-storied two-day shoot of Tyler’s transformation went. Most endearing? Michael Trevino’s reward for minding his diet.
Did the two of you do anything to celebrate when filming was done?
[Laughs] He’s a cookie monster. He’s a total chocolate chip cookie-aholic. He’s shirtless for most of it, and boys being boys, they want to be extra, extra fit for those days. He skipped eating the chocolate chip cookies over and over at lunch. And finally, he was wrapping up that day, and we went to lunch and it was like sugar white chocolate cookies, and those are not the ones that he wanted. So I asked catering if they wouldn’t mind baking him his own chocolate chip cookies. So that was a good celebration. And then production got him a giant pepperoni pizza. Everyone just shoved warm yummy food toward his dressing room, very motherly.

And MTV’s Hollywood Crush has posted more from their Ian Somerhalder interview. So how does Damon really feel about Stefan being trapped in a tomb with Katherine?
“It would seem as though Stefan in this cave away from Elena stuck with Katherine is exactly where he’d want him to be, but he wants to get his brother out of there. I can’t imagine being stuck in there with her,” Ian said. “He needs him. He needs his brother. There are some elements coming to town that are highly problematic to them and that pose a serious danger to everything that Damon loves, and it’s a tough time for him.”

Zap2It‘s Carina MacKenzie has been on the Vampire Diaries set this week and she had a chance to discuss tonight’s episode, By the Light of the Moon, with Michael Trevino, Candice Accola, and Ian Somerhalder. Each of them has wonderful insight into everything from filming the scene to the Mystic Falls politics that lay beyond Tyler’s werewolf transformation. (Werewolves and vampires don’t exactly get along, remember? And Tyler is 2-2 on relatives killed by vampires.) But first up, Julie Plec explains why that “controversial” promo is misleading:
There is one thing that everyone from Michael Trevino’s co-stars to showrunners Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec agreed on unanimously: this is Trevino’s episode to shine, and it’s a story that’s been well-earned.
“Though the promos have focused heavily on the ‘triangle’ drama, honestly the episode really belongs to Michael Trevino, Tyler, as we watch him go through the most harrowing experience of his life,” Plec says, referring to the CW’s episode trailer, which may not do the actual plot of the episode much justice.
