Wetpaint has an exclusive interview with Kayla Ewell about her return to The Vampire Diaries as Vicki . . . or Vicki’s ghost? Or something.
“I think what’s interesting about Vicki coming back is that it’s not just solely about Jeremy. It’s about having unfinished business with my brother, Matt (Zach Roerig), and my ex-boyfriend, Tyler (Michael Trevino). There are just so many different ways to go with the story. And after my little talk with Kevin Williamson I think they’re going to do some really fascinating things. There’s going to be so many twists and turns — even just talking to him about it I had butterflies in my stomach! I was just so excited about the ideas they’ve been tossing around. So we’ll see what they come up with, but I just know that Kevin and Julie will do a fantastic job whatever they decide.”

io9‘s Charlie Jane Anders has put together a rockin’ post called 10 Lessons Every Other TV Show Should Learn from Vampire Diaries. Agree or disagree, it’s a fantastic breakdown of what the show does right and why it continues to shrug off the “teenage vampire melodrama” label with every twist and cliffhanger. Next time someone asks you why they should check out the show, just send ‘em a link to this.
I feel like there’s sort of an unspoken understanding on television: standalone episodes move fast, but arcs move slowly. An arc on television plays out over an entire season, with a handful of “turning point” episodes. Even shows that have no standalone episodes often seem to unspool their arcs at a fairly leisurely pace, with just one or two major events per episode.
The Vampire Diaries laughs at your slow promenade of plot development. Vampires may live forever, but on this show, their storylines are mayflies. And we’re all the more distracted and obsessed, as a result.

Two new chapters of Inside The Vampire Diaries, hosted by Candice Accola, have popped up on the CW’s website, and it’s an extra-special treat to see TVD writers Caroline Dries and Andrew Chambliss in front of the camera, answering fan questions. They touch on their personal favorite characters to write for, how the writing process works on the show, the role the books currently play in regards to the show, the most difficult storylines to break and their favorite line in Season 2 (we laughed!), and whether they were interested in the supernatural before writing for TVD. Click the screencaps below to watch both videos on the CW (international fans can view them, too).

And Kevin Williamson touches on bringing the supporting characters to the forefront in Season 2, why Katherine was a pleasant surprise, the biggest story challenge of the season, his favorite character to write for, which TVD character has already found true love, whether we’ll ever meet Caroline’s dad, will creatures other than vampires, werewolves, and witches make an appearance in Mystic Falls, and what’s in store as we head into Season 3.

Sorry things have been a bit quiet around here – we’re taking a breather and holding off on a mountain of speculation posts and spoilery interviews until after the season finale airing in the U.K. Tuesday night. We do think it’s safe to say that the final moments of As I Lay Dying felt like a reset button – some stories came to an end and new story nuggets sent the fandom spiraling into hardcore theory mode. We’ve already heard from Julie about the big stuff that happened and now PopWrap‘s Jarett Wieselman chats with Kevin Williamson about what was right and not-quite-right in Season 2 and looks at the possibilities of Season 3, the “Year of the Originals” (and other stuff we won’t mention here…yet). There’s also a mega-cool bit of behind-the-scenes trivia on who Julie and Kevin originally approached for the role of Rose.
PopWrap: Looking back, what do you feel were the most creatively satisfying elements of season two?
Kevin: Katherine. That is a highlight for me. Watching this character, who we truly planned to never see that much, become so alive and delicious thanks to Nina, suddenly it made us reroute the entire season. Also watching all the supporting characters, who I knew were capable of so much more in the first season, get to shine this year was amazing. Especially Caroline. Turning her into a vampire … I knew Candice had it in her.

As most of you know, Kevin Williamson has been hard at work on the Secret Circle pilot (you can keep up with the haps at TheSecretCircle.net and on Twitter @secret_circle) and he’s finally addressing a rumor that’s been floating since the pilot was announced: A possible crossover between The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle (should it be picked up to series). But Williamson tells The Hollywood Reporter that it is indeed just a rumor:
Some have even hinted at the idea of a potential crossover with The Secret Circle, set in the North, and The Vampire Diaries, set in Mystic Falls, Va. But Williamson rejects any possibility of that. “The witches in The Vampire Diaries are not in the same universe. We’re not connecting them; there are no crossovers,” he says. “There are no vampires and werewolves in the witch world in Secret Circle.”
Truthfully, the rumor never made much sense to us, so we’re happy to hear that each show plans to stick with its own mythology and strengths. And we’re definitely interested in seeing how The Secret Circle adapts to the screen. (Even if there are no Henderson twins, sniffle.)
In the same interview, Williamson also lays some fan fears to rest concerning his commitment to The Vampire Diaries:
“My goal is for Julie [Plec] and I to stay focused on The Vampire Diaries, and Andrew Miller and his team will be in place and we will help and guide him along the way [on The Secret Circle],” he says. “I’m not going to step away from my vampires. I’m too invested at this point; it’s too much of a family for me to walk away from, but there’s room in our day for me to help guide The Secret Circle along the way.”

The Hollywood Reporter has an excellent Q&A with Kevin Williamson, who’s been relatively quiet on the Vampire Diaries front this season due to working on other projects, including developing and filming the pilot for L.J. Smith’s The Secret Circle. Kev talks about the challanges of bringing The Vampire Diaries to the screen every week, the struggle against leaks and spoilers, how recent developments in Bonnie’s story were almost very, very different (we think they ultimately made the right call), their original plans for Katherine, and casting Joseph Morgan as Klaus (he makes his TVD debut tonight!).
THR: What were conversations like casting a pivotal character like Klaus?
Williamson: I wanted someone who felt European, who felt old world. Clearly, I went to the accents. [Laughs] Joseph Morgan came in and he nailed it. He had the sense of humor that I wanted Klaus to have. The way we always described [the character] is, “Klaus can out-Damon Damon.” We teased this season between Damon and Klaus, but there’s so much material, it’s an open minefield next year between Damon, Stefan and Klaus. The originals, here they come.
