In a lot of ways, it feels like the love triangle is being relaunched. Instead of rehashing the old I-don’t-know-how-I-feel stuff, Elena’s new “condition” leads to new problems and new connections between her and the Salvatore boys.
KSiteTV: The Vampire Diaries: Ten Things About Season 4′s First Two Episodes
One thing I will definitely praise The Vampire Diaries for is it remembers its roots, and it remembers the characters that made a lot of it come together. A different show might forget characters like Aunt Jenna, Lexi, Anna, or Alaric, but not this one. The second episode in particular is willing to look back at The Vampire Diaries’ past while still looking forward, which is rewarding to this longtime viewer while at the same time not alienating a new one.
Elena is understandably horrified by the possibility of becoming a vampire at the beginning of the episode, despite acknowledging that her potential transition is a better situation than Matt being dead. She goes through all of the expected stages of the transition, including a strong desire for blood, heightened senses and wacky emotions.

We already knew that Bonnie was going to do everything she could to attempt to stop Elena’s transition into a vampire, but how far she really goes is amazing. The girl gives literally everything she has to help her friend, no matter the repercussions are for her use dark magic.

Two more (Spoiler Alert!) interviews with Cassidy Freeman to help you while away the hours until 1912 (EP316) airs tonight. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress answered some questions about her character’s relationship with Damon.
THR: What causes her to target him specifically?
Freeman: I think she saw something in him. I think she was attracted to something about him and she saw possibility in him. She saw his tendency toward being that kind of vampire that’s so free and seductive. She that seed and she wanted to help it grow.

KSite TV also interviewed Cassidy, and asked her about the period costuming and how it affected her performance.
“It was great. The hair, and the makeup, and the costumes… it really helps me transform myself into a different time, and it makes you hold yourself differently, with the corsets and everything. It’s exciting for an actor to be able to change themselves that way, physically,” she reveals. “Everyone was super supportive of this character, too. I think they were excited to go to a different time, and excited to do this flashback. So it was not difficult,” she adds.

If fans of The Vampire Diaries agree on anything, it’s that people need to stop sticking daggers in Elijah, because we just can’t take it anymore. KSite TV interviewed Daniel Gillies about recent developments for his character (spoiler alert for Dangerous Liaisons (EP314)) and asked for his thoughts on Elijah’s immense popularity.
One of the perhaps unexpected things about Elijah is how warmly he has been accepted by the Vampire Diaries fan base. What does Gillies think? “I’m so grateful for it,” he says. “I’ve never really had a character like this before. My response to it that I’m extremely flattered. It’s what you would hope for, whenever you take a role. I had no idea that he would have the effect he did.”
Daniel also talks more about various developments in season 3.

Speaking of season 3 developments, Zap2it spoke with Julie Plec about what’s coming up next after last week’s eventful episode (another spoiler alert for Dangerous Liaisons!). Julie talks about the current state of things between Damon and Elena, and teases the upcoming flashback episode, which will guest star Cassidy Freeman.
“I haven’t seen [her episode], I’ve only heard that she’s awesome,” Plec says. “Cassidy Freeman’s character is a vampire that we’ll meet in our 16th episode, which is the first episode in March back. The episode is called ’1912′ and it’s timed about 100 years ago… when Damon was still the Damon that walked out the door in a huff of disappointment and piousness when his brother was out of control in 1864.”

KSiteTV attended yesterday’s press screening for Dangerous Liaisons (EP314) and has a write-up of the Julie Plec Q&A that took place after the episode viewing. She had some very interesting things to say about Matt, Jeremy, Tyler, Klaus, the triangle, the Originals, the Original Petrova, and the development of a surprising/not-so-surprising connection between two characters.
The whole character of Elijah – and I’ve said this before, but I can’t say it enough – has been such a glorious surprise to us as writers, because it’s really been as much of Daniel Gillies and what he’s brought to the character, that has fed into what we want to give to the character. So of course, when we decided that there needed to be a Big Bad Evil Vampire in the middle of last season, that paved the way to the introduction of Klaus, in a million years, never would we have said ‘Oh! And then one day he’ll have this magnificent and lovely friendship with Elena!’ You know? And yet, that has evolved over the course of a season and a half worth of stuff for Elijah and for Daniel. So we kind of like to watch it as it happens, more than we even like to lay the map for them, because they bring so much to it. And then we are able to play with that a little bit. Next week definitely is very much rooted in the foundation of this compassion that Elena has for Elijah.
READ THE ENTIRE Q&A AT KSITETV.
Entertainment Weekly was also at the screening and Julie Plec underscores that there are no mortal (or immortal) certainties in Mystic Falls:
“I don’t know that you can be that certain about the fate of anybody,” she said. “Many of our characters are going to come face to face with their maker before the season is over. The question of whether they meet, shake hands, and get dragged away with the maker is another question. There’s going to be a lot of moments where we’re not really sure who is really safe and who is going to see it through.”
READ THE ENTIRE WRITE-UP AT ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.
And The Futon Critic has more from the TVD cast, including Candice Accola, who points out the quirks of working on a show with such a large cast:
Joking aside, the actress said that the large number of characters on the show makes moments when they finally come together really pop. “It is an odd thing with these wonderful, wonderful characters developed throughout the show and the series but because there are so many of us on set at once… even Caroline and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) have never been in a scene together, ever! There’s all these different characters whose paths don’t cross… “

A select number of media outlets were invited to a round table interview with Vampire Diaries’ Michael Trevino today and he had some very interesting things to say about recent developments between Tyler and Caroline and…someone else, the lengths Tyler is willing to go to set things right in tomorrow night’s episode, and even who he’d like to see Tyler hook up with should he and Caroline be on the outs forever. Read (and watch!) the entire interviews at the below websites, but be cautioned there are spoilers for The New Deal (EP310), Our Town (EP311) and The Ties That Bind (EP312).
KSiteTV: Michael Trevino Of The Vampire Diaries Previews “The Ties That Bind”:
“At the end of last week’s episode we find out that as much free will as Tyler thinks he has, that sire bond is really a lot stronger than anybody could have imagined, so much so that he literally bites Caroline. But unwillingly. He’s as shocked as her. He’s like ‘How did I do that? Why did I do that?’ The sire bond is something not to be taken lightly,” Trevino says.
“It’s possible [there is no way to break the sire bond],” Trevino teased. “We don’t know for sure, but we know there are steps we have to do to get to that if you want to try. And it’s not the easiest process, but Tyler’s going to try.”
Zap2It: ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Michael Trevino: How far will Tyler go for Caroline? (VIDEO):
He’s ready for a fight with Klaus if it comes down to it. “I would like a showdown. I know Julie [Plec] would write something epic. It’d be really good. Plus, just for me, with any kind of showdown, it’s great to work with a great actor, and Joseph’s pretty solid,” he jokes.
So many things will definitely be changing for Mystic Falls’ number two hybrid, but Trevino assured EW that one essential thing would always remain the same: “Tyler is shirtless [tomorrow night], believe it or not,” he laughed. “Tyler is shirtless.”

Screeners for the January 5th episode of The Vampire Diaries, The New Deal (EP310), were sent to select TV bloggers/reporters today, and KSiteTV has a (mildly spoilery) preview of what TVD fans can expect when the show returns next week.
7. Shippers will be happy. Which shippers? The CW gods said not to tell… but I can say at least three fan-groups get to see their favorite characters interacting. The choice of names that Klaus lists as “Elena’s loved ones” is also particularly interesting. And some shippers might want to get their screen-capturing software handy.
