IMG DESC Welcome back, everybody! It’s time for the second round of the grimmest awards in The Vampire Diaries fandom, where the corpses are piled so high we need two votes to sort them out. We’ve given the regulars their chance, and by now you’ve all seen the results of last week’s poll, but this week it’s time to give the little guys their shot. (Or their stake, snatched heart, broken neck…whatever!) Who will take home a Golden Gravestone this week? The power is in your hands.

Mixed in with this week’s procession of the not-so-dearly departed, you’re going to see one big name: Mason Lockwood. Dude…I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. So much has happened on this show that I totally forgot that Mason was in Season 2, not Season 1, and I accidentally left him off the list. Grandma Lockwood hates me now, and I deserve it. Fear not, however, because this week you can vote for three (3!) of your favorite deaths. That way you can show Mason some love if you’re inclined to without having to skip any especially cool kick-offs among the little guys. There’s plenty of death to choose from, so go to town!

A Visitor's Guide to Mystic Falls: Your Favorite Authors on The Vampire DiariesJust like last week, Leave a comment on this post that makes a case for your pick and you’ll be automatically entered to win a copy of A Visitor’s Guide to Mystic Falls: Your Favorite Authors on The Vampire Diaries (co-edited by us and Leah Wilson), courtesy of Smart Pop Books. You have until Tuesday, July 5th at midnight ET to have your comment count as an entry. We’ll also only be counting ONE comment per person, but feel free to discuss away in the comments.

POLL: Who was the Most Underrated Character of Vampire Diaries Season 2?All of us have that one character we feel just doesn’t get their proper due – so now’s the time to be loud and proud. Who was the Most Underrated Character of Vampire Diaries Season 2? Who deserves more recognition for who they are and what they do? Whose Season 2 efforts – be they main cast or guest star – have been so wrongfully overlooked by fandom? We’re excluding characters featured in the Season 2 MVP post so we can highlight the other vampires, witches, werewolves, and humans who had an impact this season. Pick THREE characters you feel were woefully underrated.

NOTE: Don’t confuse “underrated” with “underused.” That’s an entirely different poll!

A Visitor's Guide to Mystic Falls: Your Favorite Authors on The Vampire DiariesAnd here’s an added bonus: Leave a comment on this post that makes a case for your picks and you’ll be automatically entered to win a copy of A Visitor’s Guide to Mystic Falls: Your Favorite Authors on The Vampire Diaries (co-edited by us and Leah Wilson), courtesy of Smart Pop Books. The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThe lifespan of a TV drama usually goes a little something like this:

Season One – The show is finding its feet, establishing its mythology. It stumbles a bit at first but by the finale has built up a full head of steam.

Seasons Two/Three – Having settled into a groove with the writers, cast, and directors, the show becomes Pure Freaking Awesome. The story arc is amazing, engaging, full of character development and breathless action.

Seasons Four/Five – The show begins to falter as the original story arc expires. Typically by this point there are new writers. Old beloved characters are killed off and gimmicky plot lines appear and cause eyerolling among longtime fans. Oddly, some of the best individual episodes tend to come out of the worst seasons (witness Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s “Once More With Feeling”). They stand out all the more because of the overall decline in quality.

Seasons Six - End – At some point comes the official Shark-Jumping; die-hard fans hang on as long as they can, but even they have to admit watching has become a lot harder than it was in those halcyon early days. A large segment of the fandom takes refuge in fanfic. Cancellation happens, if fans are lucky, before it gets so bad that everyone is throwing things at the screen.

What does this mean for our beloved Vampire Diaries? Surely something made of such concentrated Awesomesauce will break the mold and be great forever…right?

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesIt’s that time of year where media outlets begin rounding up their “best of” lists and Vampire Diaries is already receiving much-deserved props. E!Online places Vampire Diaries at #3 on its list of Top 10 TV Dramas of 2010 (yep, above True Blood and Dexter), saying:

Improbably excellent, The Vampire Diaries is addictive and involving television that deserves to be taken more seriously by critics everywhere.

And BuddyTV places Vampire Diaries at #5 on its Top 10 of ’10: Best Shows of the Year:

The Vampire Diaries started off strong in 2009, but 2010 saw the best of the storylines so far. We got Elena’s twisted genealogy, Caroline transformation into the town’s bitchiest vampire and Tyler’s sudden relevance as a werewolf. We also met Katherine. You can’t go wrong with Katherine.

Amen! And speaking of BuddyTV, the guys of Vampire Diaries made an impressive showing in their TV’s 100 Sexiest Men of 2010 list. Here’s how they placed: Taylor Kinney as Mason Lockwood (#59), Michael Trevino as Tyler Lockwood (#48), Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore (#18), and Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore at #1. Well done!

Finally – we’ll be meeting her character Jules for the first time tonight, but Vampire Diaries writer Mike Daniels (who just so happened to write tonight’s episode, By the Light of the Moon) tweeted this morning to announce that guest star Michaela McManus has joined Twitter: @MichaelaMcM. Give her a warm welcome! (We’re reserving judgment on whether her character deserves a warm welcome. For now. This is Mystic Falls, you understand.)

Mason Lockwood may be gone, but he seems to have plenty of friends concerned for his well-being and willing to come looking for him. According to E! Online, Stephen Amell (Heartland, CSI: Miama, NCIS: Los Angeles) is joining the cast for a couple of episodes as Mason’s friend Brady, who comes to Mystic Falls for reasons connected to his missing pal. What connection he has to Mason’s other friend, Jules, and whether he’s a werewolf or not remains to be seen.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesL.A. Times‘ Vlada Gelman chats with Taylor Kinney about whether the love between Mason and Katherine is mutual, his favorite part of shooting Vampire Diaries (night shoots rule!), how anything goes in Mystic Falls, and Tyler’s fate. Warning: Interview is highly spoilerific for Plan B, so if you haven’t watched yet, avert thine eyes.

I think Tyler is going to flip out. I don’t know. He doesn’t have a choice. Mason did. He got distracted, but he really was there and he really did care for Tyler. That’s his blood… He doesn’t want to see him mess up the way he did. So yeah, I think Tyler’s going to flip… I can’t imagine he’s going to be able to keep it together much longer. I think everyone should keep an eye on Tyler. I think he’s going to have his share of stories to tell.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesChicagoNow chats with Katerina Graham about Bonnie’s journey thus far, with a particular focus on relationships and whether Bonnie is motivated by guilt over her grandmother and Caroline.

When I feel guilty about something, it never comes out exactly like, “Oh, I just feel so bad about things.” It can kind of manifest in different ways. I think that’s what’s happening with Bonnie. She’s just kind of putting all the pieces together on how we’re going to fix this and how we’re going to help Caroline adjust and make her better and get the situation under control. And how am I going to get my friend back? I think at some point she has to stay involved to keep any control over the situation because if she’s completely out of it then mayhem can ensue and she can do nothing about it.

Taylor Kinney has been making the rounds, interview-wise, and he’s bringing up all sorts of subjects, from motivations to moonstones. Most of these cover the same ground. From his Collider interview:

What’s it been like to work with Michael Trevino and establish that family bond with your characters?

KINNEY: He’s great. He’s really gracious. We’ll walk together on set and someone will see us from behind and get us mixed up. People really do think we’re related. When I first got to town for work, we spent a bunch of time just running around and playing pool and we saw a couple of flicks, just to help me get adjusted to the area. We struck up a good bond, and you apply that to the role and the characters and it comes across well. He’s been doing an awesome job. Tyler has got a lot in store. I know the viewers are asking about that, and he’s got some surprises coming up as well.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesCelebuzz brings us our first post-Kill Or Be Killed revelation interview with Taylor Kinney. For everyone lamenting Mason’s seeming involvement with the dark side, you may be interested in what he has to say about the K-word. Definitely something to chew on. He also talks about his initial (but brief) hesitation in playing a werewolf, working with real wolves, how he stacks up against Twilight‘s Taylor Lautner and True Blood‘s Joe Manganiello, and the impending pop culture obsession with werepires. (They’re gonna be HUGE.)

Your character Mason doesn’t get along with the Salvatore Brothers, Damon and Stefan (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.) How is Mason going to fare against these two vampires?

I can tell you that it’s just going to escalate. The Salvatore Brothers don’t back down. Stefan, in most cases, would be the voice of reason but then Mason goes in and kinda affects him. I attack him as well. The tension between the three of us only escalates. It’s a chess match and it’s a boxing match. It really doesn’t stop anytime soon. There’s gonna be some good stuff in there.

That quote contains our favorite word in relation to this show: “escalate.” READ THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW AT CELEBUZZ.
