The CW’s Marisa Mineo tweeted this intriguing still from Bad Moon Rising (at least we’re pretty certain it’s that episode, otherwise Stefan hasn’t had time to wash his hoodie for a few eps). EDIT: Our bad – it’s from episode 5, Kill Or Be Killed (Stefan is either allergic to laundry, or owns a lot of hoodies). Stefan and Mason facing off in the Vampire Diaries? Oh my. This could get very hairy…

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesZap2It’s Carina MacKenzie got to chat with Taylor Kinney (soon to grace our screens as Mason Lockwood) about Lockwoods, werewolves and Mystic Falls Atlanta:

Uncle Mason seems to be pretty mellow initially, especially compared to Tyler, but anger is kind of a Lockwood family tradition. Are we going to see Mason show his temper any time soon?
Of course. Mason grew up in Mystic Falls, but he left probably before college, before adulthood, and he’s come of age now. He’s learned to harness his rage and to deal with problems in a more amicable way than lashing out the way that Tyler is right now. He’s comes back to Mystic Falls because of the death of his brother, but he stays because he empathizes with where Tyler is right now. He recognizes himself in Tyler and he knows the curse that’s in their bloodline. He’s going to try to help Tyler keep from being so on edge all the time.

Thanks to @LilMissX we have a behind the scenes picture of Ian and Nina on set for you:

There’s so much Vampire Diaries goodness flying around right now, we’re just gonna throw stuff up willy-nilly as a means of distraction. (Less than 6 hours to go, East coast!) Courtesy of CW’s @MissMarisM, a behind the scenes photo of Taylor Kinney as Mason Lockwood. By the way, this is the fourth hot-guy-in-white-undershirt picture we’ve blogged in the past 48 hours. Life is hard.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesCountdown to The Return is a series of guest posts by Vampire Diaries fans on topics they’re pondering as we head into Season 2. Blogger Lee MacOdrum looks at the history of werewolves in folklore and pop culture and ponders how Vampire Diaries will make its mark in lycanthrope legend.

In folklore, we know him as vaukalak, hombre lobo, lupo mannaro, loup-garou, lycanthropos. In pop culture, we know him as Lawrence Talbot, David Kessler, Will Randall, Lucian, Jacob Black, Alcide, George Sands. He is the lukos anthropos: the werewolf. And in a few short days, the names of Mason and Tyler Lockwood will be added to his legend. I can’t wait! Ever since Tyler’s wolf-tastic yellow eye peered up at that perplexed paramedic, this particular arc has had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation for Season Two to begin.

One of the things that initially drew me to The Vampire Diaries was the way in which the show’s writers cleverly combined traditional folklore and pop culture perceptions with a pinch of their own original spin to create the show’s vampire lore. Now they have the same opportunity with werewolves and I am stoked.

To date, we know our Lockwood lycanthropes will shift into “real wolf” forms (nod to folklore) and their change will be dependent on the full moon (nod to pop culture), but if the residents of Mystic Falls are going to make it out of this one alive (well, some of them anyway), two vital questions still need answering: How does one become a werewolf? And how does one kill a werewolf?

While we wait in fevered anticipation for The Vampire Diaries reveal, I thought it might be fun to take a quick look at how folklore and pop culture werewolf mythology has answered these questions before.

Zap2It’s Carina MacKenzie is teasing us with another sneak peek at her Vampire Diaries interview videos. This time it’s the turn of Nina Dobrev, and to make a nice change, the conversation is focusing on Elena rather than the return of Katherine to Mystic Falls. Head on over to the Zap2It website to watch the video and read the article.

The titles for episodes 2, 3 and 4 of the Vampire Diaries have been announced: Brave New World, Bad Moon Rising, and Memory Lane (no prizes for guessing what that episode will involve…). And speaking of Brave New World, we have a couple of episode stills from that episode – and more from The Return – for you courtesy of the lovely people at Vampire Diaries Web.

Some of you were a little disappointed with the earlier spoilers for season two that we posted. Hopefully this little teaser from executive producer Julie Plec via Keck’s Exclusives will get you all wondering about what’s coming up on the Vampire Diaries:

“Our big new addition is Mason Lockwood, the mayor’s much younger and cooler brother, who has been estranged from the family,” says executive producer Julie Plec. “His return introduces a lot of questions about what is so special about that creepy Lockwood family.”

We’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything about casting. In the meantime, speculate in the comments with who you think he is, why he’s been estranged, and what he plans to do in Mystic Falls…

Ian Somerhalder is looking to salvage something positive from the Gulf oil spill crisis, and hopes that it will be the wake up call that the world needs to make it a priority to search for greener energy sources. Speaking with Zap2It’s Carina MacKenzie, Ian revealed that the Vampire Diaries set will be doing its bit to green up within the entertainment industry:

“It takes a lot of power to run a movie set. We go through a lot of fuel,” Somerhalder says. “It’s harmful, and we can start changing that a little bit. We can get rid of these noisy, stinky, disgusting gas generators. There’s going to be a lot of thought that goes into this revolution that’s going to happen.”

“We’re dealing with California Transportation Department, we’re dealing with the Department of Defense, we’re dealing with disaster relief — but we’re also dealing with the entertainment industry. We’ll be taking major productions green, like big concerts and music festivals. Greening the ‘Vampire Diaries’ set is a priority for me, which we’re going to be doing this year.”
