I have a theory. It could be demons? No, not that one. We all know the saying “Nice guys finish last.” Well, I have a theory that most of those “nice guys” are not actually “nice,” but rather, losers. “Nice” is very often the adjective applied to someone about whom we have nothing else to say. It is the default adjective for our dealings with people out in the world—anyone who is not completely awful or absolutely fabulous is “nice,” causing the word to lose all meaning. Thus, “nice” often means mediocre, or okay-looking, or no-personality-but-at-least-he-didn’t-piss-me-off. I think that if there were an actual nice guy, he would definitely not finish last. In fact a girl (or boy) might be prone to forgetting all about “the bad boy” in favor of this rare specimen. Matt Donovan (or Matt Honeycutt to the book fans), I would argue, is one of these rare truly nice guys—“nice” in the very best sense of the word.
There are a number of different standard character roles in literature, film, and television, and amongst them is “the nice guy.” “The nice guy” role often overlaps with “the best friend,” “the sidekick,” “the everyman,” or sometimes, “the geek.” “Nice guys” usually have unrequited feelings for a “nice girl,” who, of course, should not be confused with the “nice guy,” since “nice girls” are a totally different deal. Yes, the world isn’t fair. The “nice guy” is usually overshadowed by a friend with special abilities—sometimes athletic, musical, or super-powered.

Heroine TV has posted an interesting article comparing morality in the Vampire Diaries and the Whedonverse (Buffy, Angel and Firefly) and how there are a lot of positive similarities between them. It wins me over for giving a Matt Honeycutt scene some serious love, but even without that it’s well worth a read. ;)
We’ve had word from Ian Somerhalder Italy that the Vampire Diaries will be airing in Italy on “Mediaset Premium“, likely from December. It should be airing at some point in 2010 on public television channel “Italia 1“.
You can vote for the TV series that you’re most looking forward to in YouTube’s Fall Preview. Aside from the Vampire Diaries there are a whole lot of trailers for a large number of shows for you to take a look at. Personally, I’m boggling over the fact that ‘Paranormal Cops’ is an actual TV show.
A quick reminder that reprints of The Awakening and The Struggle with the TV series tie-in covers should be available from today. For those of you wanting to read the books before the TV series airs on September 10th, now is the perfect time to go and buy them.
Finally, as we’ve mentioned before, the CW and the Red Cross are joining forces to promote blood drives in over 230 schools and college campuses across the United States; you can read the CW press release about it on the Futon Critic. Tomorrow (Wednesday, August 26th) there will be a blood drive taking place at the Ball Room at Georgia Tech. Cast members Ian Somerhalder, Kayla Ewell, Michael Trevino and Steven R. McQueen will be there from 9-10 am, and you can book an appointment to give blood here on the Red Cross website. If you’re in the United Kingdom, please consider finding a donation centre in your local area and giving blood, too.

If you do decide to starve your vampire in order to donate, we urge caution until the next time you’ve been able to properly feed them. They tend to get a little tetchy without a regular meal of blood. ;)

Sabrina Rojas-Weiss has a new installment of her Book Report: The Vampire Diaries up on MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog. While I think Red will take great exception to what she has to say about Matt (that flag flies high around these parts!), she does list off five reasons why the series will appeal to “Twilighters and Twi-Haters.” She touches on why Elena Gilbert kicks ass and why her friends are awesome, the appeal of Stefan and Damon, and why Fell’s Church is a very interesting place to live.
We also appreciate that she’s unafraid to touch on the series’ faults, too. Read the entire post over on the Hollywood Crush blog.

L.J. Smith has written two short Vampire Diaries stories that are now available on the stories page of her website. The first is “Matt & Elena: First Date” (set around a year before The Awakening), and the second is “Bonnie & Damon: After Hours” (set during the first trilogy).
Update: The short stories have been removed from L.J. Smith’s website due to an interest from the publishers in producing an anthology of short Vampire Diaries stories.
