Today was Vampire Diaries day at New York Comic Con (we think there might have been other stuff going on, but it pales in comparison to the Vampire Diaries, right?), with Kevin Williamson, Julie Plec, Steven R. McQueen, Katerina Graham, Zach Roerig and Sara Canning in attendance. Moderated by the lovely Carina MacKenzie (@cadlymack on Twitter – give her a follow), the panel was – by all accounts – a blast, with all kinds of intriguing spoilers and factoids being revealed (which you can see further down under the spoiler warning). Carina was also able to confirm with Steven that he doesn’t have a Twitter account. Anyone claiming to be him is a fake. Accept no substitutes.

Carina kindly gave permission for us to share a few of her photos from the event:

We’ll be adding links to videos and more pics when they’re uploaded (unfortunately cell service at the panel was poor, so many people weren’t able to tweet comments and pictures at the time). While we wait for that, get a load of the spoilery goodness revealed during the panel and in the press room.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesLots more interviews popping up and no signs of slowing down. First up, BuzzSugar has a chat with Katerina Graham, who talks about Nina Dobrev as Katherine, what we can expect from Bonnie (including whether Bonnie may have a new love interest), and how things are hopping right out of the gate in the Season 2 premiere, The Return.

BuzzSugar: What are you most excited about in the upcoming season?

Katerina Graham: I’m really excited about the season premiere, honestly. There have been so many episodes shot after that — we’re on episode six — but I’m really dying to see the season premiere, I’m just dying!

TV Squad caught up with Melinda Clarke during press for Nikita (debuting this Thursday, right after the Vampire Diaries season premiere) and she speculates on returning to Mystic Falls as Kelly Donovan:

Yes, it would just be a matter of the network and producers and writers working that out. They’re two totally, absolutely different characters, which is great, but it would be kind of up to the network to decide if they wanted to see my face two hours in a row. Although, right now, Amanda is definitely a supporting character. She’s kind of mysterious and enigmatic, you don’t really know much about her and I don’t think there will be very much revealed in the beginning. But yeah, I talked to Kevin Williamson, I talked to Peter Roth, the head of Warner Brothers … but, yes, in a perfect world it would be great to go visit Mystic Falls and just ruin Matt’s life even more.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesFancast has a look back (and forward) at the first season of The Vampire Diaries, courtesy of TVD executive producer Kevin Williamson. He discusses budget limitations, moments he’s particularly proud of, and what we can all look forward to in Season 2.

2. Do you have a favorite episode, line, or scene from this season? If so – what?
There are a few moments in the finale that qualify as my favorite but you’ll have to wait for it. I’m particularly proud of 105 [Lost Girls]. It was early on and we were still finding the show. I felt this episode brought all the elements together for me. The writing, directing, design, acting, photography, wardrobe, hair/make-up, everything came together for me and I truly saw the “epic” that Julie and I had envisioned.

Nina Dobrev had her own thoughts on this Thursday’s season finale over at the NY Post’s PopWrap:

“The audience is really going to hate one person in particular,” Nina told PopWrap. Seems that a character we have fond feelings for will commit an act so heinous, it will completely change the way we see them.

That doesn’t sound good.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution ran a story on The Vampire Diaries last week, highlighting what has made the freshman drama so successful and featuring quotes from Kev, Ian, Nina, Paul, and fans of the show.

“Vampire Diaries” artfully taps into the current broader vampire craze, capturing that happy medium between the lighter, romantic “Twlight” series and HBO’s edgier “True Blood,” which returns for a third season June 13.

“‘Vampire Diaries’ is more tongue-in-cheek” than the other two series, said Miriam Torres, a 30-year-old auditor from Marietta and fan of the show. “I like that they’re not afraid to go dark. It’s almost like ‘True Blood’ for the younger set.”

Two cool interviews with the lovely Malese Jow (go listen to her new song, Red Light!): At Global Town Hall, she discusses everything from moving to Los Angeles to Oklahoma to her life’s philosophy and fitness regimen, and over at Fanbase, she talks about the audition process for Vampire Diaries, the Team Anna video, and fields several questions about Anna.

Finally, we have Melinda Clarke dropping some Vampire Diaries tidbits in an excellent interview with Teen Drama Whore. The article mostly centers around her (in)famous turn as Julie Cooper on The O.C., but she talks about her other roles as well, including Kelly Donovan.

And finally, Starry Constellation Magazine has posted their interview with Melinda Clarke. She talks about her time on The Vampire Diaries, whether Kelly Donovan will be back, and being a foodie.

Q. Is there anything about the role that you found challenging?

A. Characters that are flawed, you definitely want to make them feel likable, sympathetic, and human. There were a few times I was curious why and how, I mean I still don’t know what possesses this woman to actually make out with her son’s friend. At one point when I was working with the actor who plays Tyler (Michael Trevino), and I thought to myself, “What grade are you supposed to be in?” Of course Michael is in his twenties, but he’s supposed to of course be in high school. At that moment I think we both had to laugh because I thought, “What would possess a woman to do such a thing?” There was nothing particularly challenging, in fact it was a lot of fun.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThe L.A. Times’ Carina MacKenzie talked with Melinda Clarke about her time on The Vampire Diaries, and she hints that tonight’s episode may leave a door open for a return to the show. She discusses why Kelly Donovan and the O.C.‘s Julie Cooper are very different, shooting in a harsh Atlanta winter, the producers’ strategy telling the Vampire Diaries story, and why she thinks the series has been so successful. (She touches on her role in the CW’s Nikita pilot, too.!)

Kelly had some very, very emotional scenes last week when she found out that her daughter’s body had been discovered. How’s she going to process her grief?

What’s great about “The Vampire Diaries” is what’s not said. Kevin and Julie give a lot of credit to the audience, letting viewers read between the lines. Let’s just say that based on Kelly’s track record, I wouldn’t expect her to get any mother of the year awards after Friday night. There’s a pretty intense thing that happens between her and Matt. These stories are a little bit of a tickle and a taste of what’s to come. I have no idea what will happen in the future, but for right now, we leave Kelly in a very, very satisfying place.

The CW has posted a new still from A Few Good Men, this time featuring Melinda Clarke as Kelly Donovan, Matt and Vicki’s mom. Our first (uh, smokin’ hot) look at Kelly, from There Goes the Neighborhood (EP16), was this past weekend, but as Red just put it, Ms. Donovan’s smirk here rivals Damon’s. See more A Few Good Men stills in the Gallery.

William Keck over at TV Guide Magazine has some Vampire Diaries factoids and spoilers about the upcoming episode, “A Few Good Men”. The factoid? Marguerite MacIntyre (Sheriff Forbes), Susan Walters (Mrs. Lockwood) and Melinda Clarke (Kelly Donovan) have all appeared as Jerry’s girlfriends on sitcom Seinfeld. The spoilers? Are spoilerific, so mouseover or highlight to read them:

All three of Jerry’s exes pop up in Melinda’s first episode, titled “A Few Good Men,” in which Sheriff Forbes asks Damon to participate in a bachelor auction officiated by Mrs. Lockwood. Beyond that, executive producer Julie Plec says that Matt’s mess of a mom will interfere in his relationship with Caroline, while Caroline’s mother will reveal to Damon why Alaric Saltzman really came to town. As for Tyler’s cougar mom, she’ll cope with her husband’s infidelity by trying to sink her claws into Damon.

While we wait (im)patiently for an official synopsis and some episode stills from “A Few Good Men” to pop up, we’ve got some more stills from “Children of the Damned” for you to ogle at. We may have seen the episode already, but the stills really do let you appreciate the amazing detail that went into these costumes. Roll on the final flashback of the season, we say.

Katerina Graham talks to MTV about upcoming guest star Melinda Clarke, who will be making her first Vampire Diaries appearance when the show returns on March 25th. Clarke will be playing Kelly Donovan (Matt’s mother) and, call us crazy, but we think she might be stirring the proverbial pot a bit, hmm?

Kat admits that the cast only wants to make sure that the show’s guest stars, like Sean Faris (may he RIP), feel comfortable working with the crew down in Georgia. “We’re a pretty close knit group and we always want to welcome any guest starts with lost of love,” she explained.

As we reported on Twitter last night, Australia’s Hub Productions is pulling together their first Vampire Diaries event for July 3rd in Sydney, 9am-6pm, and July 4th in Melbourne, 9am-6pm, and they’ve announced their first guest: Paul Wesley, with more guests to be announced. Get the details over at Hub.

Speaking of Australia – you guys grab your copies of The Return: Shadow Souls? It’s out now.

Thanks to Ian Somerhalder Italy for sharing a slew of Vampire Diaries scans via the Italian press, specifically Vanity Fair Italy (!!!), Telefilm, and Dark Magazine. (Sorry, no translations, but they’re still cool to see!) UPDATE: Thanks to Only Paul Wesley, you can read the Telefilm and Dark Magazine translated interviews (they’re the same) here!
