Paging Dr. Fell: Why The New Deal (EP310) Was A Big DealOkay, so The New Deal (EP310) was a big deal for a whole slew of reasons (those are spoilers we can continue to suppress here for the international fans), but we know that fans of The Vampire Diaries book series had reason to be very excited about last night’s episode. After nearly two and a half seasons, a fan favorite book character finally made her debut on TV: Say hello to Dr. Meredith Fell, played by Torrey DeVitto.

If you’ve been following this website since the beginning, when we were covering the pilot’s development and production – waaaaaay back in early 2009 – you know there was a big sticking point with book series fans: Where’s Meredith? We blogged about it one, or two, or three times. In April 2009, Julie Plec acknowledged Meredith’s absence from the pilot for the first time, saying: “Be patient, Meredith fans.” And now here we are.

Zap2It has a nice write-up on Julie and Kevin Williamson finally making good on their promise to bring Meredith into the TV series fold. As is to be expected, there have been some changes made to the character in translating her from page to screen – TV!Meredith is now a Fell and is older than her book counterpart – but Julie hints that the good doctor will have a bigger role to play as we head into the rest of Season 3:

Book Meredith is unique in that she’s one character who is completely unaffected by Damon’s charms — in fact, she makes him a little bit nervous. Most of Meredith’s scenes are with Alaric and Damon, so viewers can look forward to seeing just how Damon reacts to a little romance getting in the way of his bromance. “She’s a Fell, so she’s got a point of view about how to handle the vampire business in this town,” Plec teases. We’re sure Damon will be thrilled.

We know she had a very brief appearance on last night’s episode, but how do book fans feel about finally having Meredith on their TV screens? Let us know in the comments!

XX XX

As for The Hunters trilogy itself – since L.J. Smith is no longer writing The Vampire Diaries series, we’re not sure how much of the original concept (as alluded to in her blog) remains intact. Here’s the official release from HarperCollins:

A regular on national bestseller lists, having sold well over three million copies, The Vampire Diaries series is a classic of thrilling paranormal romance. Julie PlecAccording to the CW primetime schedule posted over at SpoilerTV episode 20 of the Vampire Diaries has the rather ominous sounding title of The Last Day. Thanks to @LEXpressions or the heads up.

Entertainment Weekly have some details from Julie Plec on what’s in store for Damon regarding his treatment of Andie, and also rising tensions between Damon and Stefan.

Julie Plec says we’ll get to see Elena’s and Stefan’s reactions to Damon’s decision to use mind compulsion on local TV news reporter Andie Star (Dawn Olivieri) to make her his substitute girlfriend/blood donor. “We won’t hit that for a few more episodes, but there will be that moment when Damon’s desire to distract himself from his feelings for Elena blow up in his face, and the allure of Andie starts to leave a bit of a sour taste,”

Julie also offered to answer some fan questions on Twitter recently (follow her, @julieplec), clearing up a few things and teasing us for things that may come. We’ve got the ones that may be of interest to you all highlighted below.

Kevin WilliamsonKevin Williamson spoke to Zap2it about the Vampire Diaries, and boy has he dropped some major information in there for us. He talks about how he became involved in the series, the obvious comparisons to Twilight and True Blood, and then goes into a lot of detail about the story, characters and relationships on the show, and also explains a little about why Meredith wasn’t in the pilot.

We originally wrote Meredith into the pilot. What happened was we had Meredith and Caroline and Bonnie. Bonnie is the sidekick, Caroline is sort of the antagonist, twitty character. And Meredith is sort of Elena’s rock and her best friend. But when you read the script, there were all these girls, and you couldn’t really tell them apart.

The Vampire Diaries: The Fury/Dark ReunionSabrina Rojas-Weiss has a new installment of her Book Report: The Vampire Diaries up on MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog. While I think Red will take great exception to what she has to say about Matt (that flag flies high around these parts!), she does list off five reasons why the series will appeal to “Twilighters and Twi-Haters.” She touches on why Elena Gilbert kicks ass and why her friends are awesome, the appeal of Stefan and Damon, and why Fell’s Church is a very interesting place to live.

We also appreciate that she’s unafraid to touch on the series’ faults, too. Read the entire post over on the Hollywood Crush blog.

Who will play Meredith?Due to the influx of Vampire Diaries fans just hearing about the upcoming TV series – not to mention the resurgence of comments and email we’ve been receiving on the subject – we just wanted to make clear, again, that TVDtv producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson have said Meredith WILL be in the show. (*tiny voice* There’s even a little note about it, right there, at the top of the middle column. And it’s on The Cast page.)

We don’t know how, or when, or – most importantly – who (that casting will be huge news in fandom at this point), but we’ve been promised that Meredith will live. Good news, yeah? You can read the original post from April 20th here: “Be patient, Meredith fans.” (The comment from Williamson is here.)

But for the record? No matter how many times we have to answer the “Where’s Meredith?” question, we think it’s pretty damn rad that so many people have been concerned for her existence on the small screen. Because who else will be the rock and the wit, all while remaining immune to Damon’s considerable charms?

Well, well, well. Exec producer/writer Julie Plec has a message for you, Vampire Diaries fans:

We have 42 minutes to establish and get to know TEN characters in the pilot that are all crucial to the plot. Be patient, Meredith fans.

In other news, these people are all trying to give me a midnight heart attack. Aren’t you glad the v-d.net staff is spread across a few times zones?

Vampire Diaries TV SeriesIt’s the question fans have been asking more than any other, regardless of how they feel about the other changes in the pilot script: Where is Meredith Sulez?

No, you’re not confused – Meredith does not seem to be part of the Vampire Diaries TV series, or at the very least she is not part of the pilot. Instead we have Caroline (Candice Accola) sliding into Meredith’s BFF spot with the promise of book-like conflict between her and Elena (Nina Dobrev) later on down the road. (Or so it appears – we’re trying not to assume anything at this point.)

We don’t know why Meredith has not been included in the pilot. Some fans speculate the elusive nature of her character proved difficult to adapt to the screen. Others think she was sacrificed for the sake of Caroline’s expanded storyline. And still others believe that Jenna Moyer (Sara Canning), Elena’s new grad student aunt, will be fulfilling “voice of reason” duties. Read more
