The NY Post throws down the gauntlet and ticks off five reasons why Vampire Diaries is better than Twilight, citing legacy, violence, sex, a strong, independent female lead, and how Vampire Diaries is the under-dog:
“The vampires, while pretty, are still sort of vicious,” explained Lindsay Soll, editor of MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog. “When they’re hungry and about to feed, their fangs come out — they don’t even have fangs in ‘Twilight’ — and their veins stick out. They’re not afraid to make pretty people ugly.”
They’re also not afraid to make pretty people die.
Speaking of the NY Post, PopWrap name-checks Vampire Diaries as one of the 10 Best Shows of 2009:
9. “The Vampire Diaries”
Scoff if you must, but “Vampire Diaries” haters are synonymous with the uninitiated. To know this show is to love it, and to write it off as a “Twilight” knock-off is a huge mistake. If Edward or Bella ever said anything as astute or acerbic as Stefan or Elena, I would die of shock. And with Damon, Ian Somerhalder has breathed dead life [into] one of the most devious, diabolical and delicious villains in decades. Scenes (and costumes) like this one don’t hurt either.
In case you missed our tweet yesterday: The song used in the “Chapter” promo is “Losing You” by Otto’s Daughter.
We’d also like to reiterate that the Bloodlines episode synopsis currently up on IMDb is completely fake – just in case “Mistic” Falls didn’t tip you off.
And finally, a good bit of news for TVD fans in the Netherlands: Vampire Diaries makes its official debut on January 31st at 9:30pm, NET 5.

Alright, we’re not happy about the video quality on this, but we’re posting it to tide everyone over until the CW uploads a shinier version. UPDATE: Updated with the longer, official CW trailer -- thanks Denise! Here’s the “Next Chapter” promo that ran during tonight’s Vampire Diaries Marathon kick-off. And it is now officially confirmed that the show returns on January 21, 2010.
UPDATE: Song used in the promo is “Losing You” by Otto’s Daughter.
And here’s a snazzy music video promo featuring White Lies (this track was featured in Haunted and in the original Marathon promo):

Today/tonight is your last chance to vote The Vampire Diaries as Best New TV Drama in the People’s Choice Awards. Get over there and vote as many times as your index finger will allow you to click. Finger cramps are for sissies and police procedurals are boring. (Yeah. We said it.)
Nina, Paul, and Ian are heading over to Red’s home turf – that would be the U.K. – to promote The Vampire Diaries, which begins airing on ITV2 next month. Have questions for the trio? Wander over to ITV2’s Facebook page and chime in with your queries.
Finally, we know many of you have been searching for this info: The track used in the Lost Girls promo is Rie Sinclair “(Lover) What’s Going On”.

Thanks to CatChester for pointing out that Paul and Ian are both nominated for “Second Hottest Vampire” (it’s a Robert Pattinson-less poll) over at People.com. Let the page load, then click SEE ALL POLLS to get the “Who’s the second-hottest vampire?” category. Then vote, of course. (And while you’re in a voting mood, why not vote for Vampire Diaries as Favorite New TV Show in the People’s Choice Awards a gazillion bajillion times? You’d be making Julie Plec a happy bunny. Plus, Eastwick and Three Rivers have been knocked from the running.)
In case you missed our update to this post, a kind soul has decided to save our sanity by revealing the first song used in The Turning Point promo: It’s called “All I Ever Wanted” by Otto’s Daughter.
