If you’ve ever been moved to tears by The Vampire Diaries, take comfort in the fact that you’re not alone: Executive Producer Julie Plec picks her eight favorite TVD “cry” moments for Entertainment Weekly‘s 2011 round-up, and chances are at least one of your picks is also on her list. (We know quite a few of them have been mentioned in recappers’ Top 3 Moments.) Julie not only talks about the moments themselves but gives insight into how some of them came to be, the themes at work within the overall story of The Vampire Diaries, and why she cries every time she hears Birdy’s “Skinny Love.”
I think that our most successful emotional moments on the show — I go back and look at Rose’s death, when Damon has to put her out of her misery — they’re all very human, real moments. It’s a guy who just needs to hear the voice of his touchstone, of the love of his life, to let him have a better day. It’s about a girl wanting to be reunited with her mother who she was lost from. It’s about a woman admitting at first she’s afraid, but then that she’s okay to die, and a guy who has intimacy issues being willing to end it for her so she can have peace. It’s all rooted in very simple and very primal human emotional instincts, which I think is why it strikes people in their gut a little.

Friday Night Bites is a weekly round-up for various tidbits of show and cast/crew news not quite big enough to warrant a blog post, not strictly Vampire Diaries-related, or somehow just fell through the cracks. Please insert theme song by Explosions in the Sky here and enjoy. (It’s a brief one this week!)

- First off: Rejoice, Vampire Diaries fans! Most of the cast is now back in Atlanta and starting work on Vampire Diaries Season 3, which premieres Thursday, Sept. 15th on the CW. And just a reminder that we rarely post casting calls to the main blog (unless you’re Klaus, because it’s Klaus). Head over to the Spoiler Zone to speculate to your heart’s content.
- UPDATE: More info on Nina’s involvement with Project Pink, with quotes. According to Teen Vogue editor Eva Chen Bannister (thanks to her for the photo above), Nina Dobrev is the face of Puma’s Project Pink campaign. One hundred percent of sales from Puma’s Project Pink line are donated to charities dedicated to fighting breast cancer. In addition to nominating worthy charities via their website, you can help raise funds through Twitter, too: Tweet #projectpink between July 6th through October 31st and PUMA will donate $1 per day per user (up to $25,000) to the winning charity announced in October.
- Michael Trevino lands on Next Movie’s 13 Rising Young Latino Stars to Watch list.
- Kayla Ewell will guest star as a Miami bartender on A&E’s The Glades.
- Lauren Cohan talks to TV Guide Magazine’s William Keck about her upcoming role on AMC’s The Walking Dead.
- CliqueClack TV wants to know your favorite Vampire Diaries vampire. (Poll.)
- MTV’s Hollywood Crush puts the Vampire Diaries characters into the Sorting Hat. Which Hogwarts house would Elena, Stefan, Damon, Jeremy, and Bonnie be in?
