We reported a while back that the first two books in the Vampire Diaries series – “The Awakening” and “The Struggle” – were due for publication in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. They were released in Slovakia on the 17th September, and are selling very well according to the publishers of the books, Fragment. We didn’t have firm publication dates for the Czech Republic at the time, but we now know they’re due for release on the 16th October with the same covers as Slovakia (though with title tweaking). You can order them from the Fragment website.
Fragment have also created some Vampire Diaries websites. There’s one for the Czech Republic and one for Slovakia, so keep an eye on them for news about the series in those areas.

Our friends over at Vampire Diaries BG have been awesome enough to share all four of the brand new Bulgarian covers for the Vampire Diaries with us. Many thanks, guys! The Awakening (Пробуждането) is set for publication on the 16th September (having been moved up from October), though there are no dates set yet for the rest of the series. We’ll let you all know as soon as we know the dates ourselves.
These covers use the same half-face theme as many of the recent publications around the world are using at the moment, but we have to point out an interesting and applause-worthy twist: they have Bonnie on the cover of Dark Reunion. Now, how cool is that? Ibis publishers, we salute you!

Brazil seems to be really getting into the spirit of things with the Vampire Diaries! Thanks to Diarios do Vampiro giving us the heads up, we now know what the cover of The Struggle is going to look like. It’s currently due to be published in November at some point. Meanwhile, the publication date for The Awakening in Brazil is just around the corner on the 28th August.
Galera Record (the publishers in Brazil) have a few things up their sleeves to promote the series. As well as an official website with wallpaper downloads and the diaries of Stefan and Damon (Google translate is useful for those of us who don’t speak Portuguese), they’re going to be holding a masquerade ball to celebrate the launch of the books. We hope those of you lucky enough to go have a whole lot of fun, and be sure to tell us all about it!

Heroine TV has posted an interesting article comparing morality in the Vampire Diaries and the Whedonverse (Buffy, Angel and Firefly) and how there are a lot of positive similarities between them. It wins me over for giving a Matt Honeycutt scene some serious love, but even without that it’s well worth a read. ;)
We’ve had word from Ian Somerhalder Italy that the Vampire Diaries will be airing in Italy on “Mediaset Premium“, likely from December. It should be airing at some point in 2010 on public television channel “Italia 1“.
You can vote for the TV series that you’re most looking forward to in YouTube’s Fall Preview. Aside from the Vampire Diaries there are a whole lot of trailers for a large number of shows for you to take a look at. Personally, I’m boggling over the fact that ‘Paranormal Cops’ is an actual TV show.
A quick reminder that reprints of The Awakening and The Struggle with the TV series tie-in covers should be available from today. For those of you wanting to read the books before the TV series airs on September 10th, now is the perfect time to go and buy them.
Finally, as we’ve mentioned before, the CW and the Red Cross are joining forces to promote blood drives in over 230 schools and college campuses across the United States; you can read the CW press release about it on the Futon Critic. Tomorrow (Wednesday, August 26th) there will be a blood drive taking place at the Ball Room at Georgia Tech. Cast members Ian Somerhalder, Kayla Ewell, Michael Trevino and Steven R. McQueen will be there from 9-10 am, and you can book an appointment to give blood here on the Red Cross website. If you’re in the United Kingdom, please consider finding a donation centre in your local area and giving blood, too.

If you do decide to starve your vampire in order to donate, we urge caution until the next time you’ve been able to properly feed them. They tend to get a little tetchy without a regular meal of blood. ;)

At last, we have some book news to report! We know, we were as shocked (and pleased!) as you are. ;) The L.J. Smith book cover goddess, Lorraine, has updated her LJS Cover Resource website with a whole host of new covers (which are worth a look at if you’re fans of L.J. Smith’s books in general, not just the Vampire Diaries). We’re reposting the Vampire Diaries ones here with her kind permission, along with some more publication information.
First up, the USA cover for The Return: Shadow Souls with Damon on the front. We’ve seen the textless version of this cover before, but this is the first we’ve seen of the cover complete with title. As far as we’re aware, publication is still set for February 9, 2010.

It transpires that The Return: Nightfall is actually being published in two parts in both Italy (below, left) and Poland (below, right). The second part was published in Poland in July, and Italy can expect to see it at some time in November.

Finally, Germany seems to have slipped in a set of original series reprints under the radar. As far as we can tell from the Amazon.de listing they’re available now and look to be a bundle deal.

Update: We’d also like to remind everyone that you have until August 18th to enter the contest to win all of the Vampire Diaries books over on the official website. Open to residents of the USA only, be sure to read the rules before entering.

Thanks to the beady eyes of L.J. Smith covers collector Poppy, we now have a new international Vampire Diaries publication date. French fans have had the first double-volume of the Vampire Diaries available to them in book stores since February (you can read the first few chapters in French here), and on the 2nd September they can pick up the second volume, Journal d’un vampire Tome 2 (containing The Fury and Dark Reunion). You can see both covers below, as usual click on the thumbnails for larger images.

Back in June we reported that HarperTeen was re-releasing The Struggle and The Awakening on the 25th August of this year. The covers hadn’t been revealed at that point, and we speculated that there may well be a TV series tie-in. Looks like we were right, as HarperTeen has now revealed the new covers, both of which which feature Elena, Stefan and Damon as portrayed by Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder in the TV series. You can click on the thumbnails for larger images.

In other reprint news, the cover for the UK omnibus edition of The Fury and The Reunion (which is the title Dark Reunion goes by in the UK) has turned up on Amazon. It looks as if the apple cover (of which we will not speak) is here to stay for The Awakening and The Struggle. The publication dates for these are still being listed as the 6th August for volume one, and 3rd September for volume two.

We also have news on the Return Trilogy. According to Amazon.com, Nightfall is set for a paperback release on January 5th, 2010 in the USA, while Shadow Souls is still listed with a hardcover release date of 9th February, 2010. In the UK, Amazon.co.uk are listing January, 2010 for the Nightfall paperback release, and February, 2010 for Shadow Souls. These will likely be imports from the USA, as was the case with the hardcover version of Nightfall.

Good news for Bulgarian Vampire Diaries fans. IBIS Publishing House have been in touch to say that they will be publishing The Awakening (Пробуждане in cyrillic) in Bulgaria in October 2009. There’s no cover yet, but they have told us they’ll be passing it along when it’s ready. We’re looking forward to seeing it.
The publishers of the Spanish editions of the series, Planeta, have also been in touch to let us know about the official Spanish Vampire Diaries website. It looks fantastic, and it’s well worth an explore even if you don’t speak Spanish. You can find desktop wallpapers and other goodies available on the site for download. Google Translate should come in handy as a tool to help you navigate the site. Fans who subscribe to the newsletter before the end of August are also set to receive an e-copy of the recent short story, Matt & Elena: First Date, on September 15th, which has been confirmed as being a version that has been translated into Spanish.

We’ve had word from Vampire Diaries Br that the publication date for The Awakening (O Despertar) in Brazil is August 28th, 2009 and, as you can see, the cover has also been revealed. They’re going with what seems to be becoming a trend for the Vampire Diaries right now with the partial face shot and bloody lip that was first started with the 2007 reprints in the USA. What’s also interesting about this cover is that the tagline specifically mentions the TV series and the logo uses the font that we saw as a possible title card back in May. It’s certainly making us curious about the August reprints of The Awakening and The Struggle in the USA and UK and how – if at all – they might tie in with the TV series.
