Vampire Diaries: The Sun Also Rises (EP221) recap - Hope Dies LastAfter a season-long build-up to breaking the curse, it was a little surreal to actually see the curse broken. An episode that very much felt like the culmination of a season’s worth of mythology, backstory, characters’ choices and growth, The Sun Also Rises managed to pack in some serious action and slaying as well as poignant moments that won’t be soon forgotten. I know that I’m not the only one who’s been listening to “Skinny Love” on repeat since Thursday. As the sun rises on the day after the sacrifice, we’re left with a lot to grieve.

Nina Dobrev & Julie Plec talk Vampire Diaries Season 2 finalePopWrap‘s Jarett Wieselman has an in-depth discussion with Nina Dobrev on the end of Vampire Diaries Season 2 and the tragedies that have unfolded already in last week’s episode, The Sun Also Rises, and whether more is to follow during Thursday night’s season finale, As I Lay Dying. Nina looks back on Season 2, goes more in-depth into why playing both Elena and Katherine can take a toll, and her wishes for Elena in Season 3.

PopWrap: Will this finale set up the events of season three the way “Founder’s Day” set up season two?
Nina Dobrev: It does. There’s not just one – there’s two or three kind of big twists that change the course of everyone’s lives, and they’re unexpected. It affects Damon & Elena hugely. It effects Stefan more than anyone would have imagined. Jeremy’s life is just completely turned around, and almost confusing – you’ll see why soon enough. But it initiates these storylines that will flourish in season three.

READ THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW WITH NINA AT POPWRAP.

And TV Guide‘s Robyn Ross chats with Julie Plec about the aftermath of The Sun Also Rises and what fans can expect in As I Lay Dying:

The penultimate episode was epic, how can the finale compare?
Plec: The last episode was clearly the season finale of our mythology storyline. We went all out and that was as deliberate choice knowing that the story we wanted to tell in our season finale is actually the emotional resolution of the season. We also want to really give the audience a window to where we’re going in Season 3, a taste of what the series is going to be like as we move forward.

Oh, lordy, you are in for one hell of a penultimate episode, UK fans. We get some really pressing questions answered, fates of characters revealed, opinions of characters turned right around in your head. Oh, and Bonnie? Really is fierce. Think you’re ready? You really, really aren’t. But you’re gonna love it.

We have another giveaway this week, so make sure you’re following us (@tvdnews) if you want a chance to win. We’ve got two copies of the Vampire Diaries soundtracks courtesy of the awesome folks over at ITV2. We’re using the same format as we’ve done with the previous UK giveaways – one soundtrack for the best tweet using the #tvduk hashtag, and one for the first person who tweets us the answer to the trivia question we’ll post at the end of the episode. You don’t need to use the #tvduk hashtag for the trvia question, but you will need to keep a sharp eye on the little things in the episode, because that’s what the trivia question will be based on.

There’s plenty of time to still join in with the buzz following the episode after it aired in the US:

Tune in to ITV2 (and be sure to follow @itv2 on Twitter for some entertaining live-tweeting) at 9pm tonight to catch The Sun Also Rises, or catch it again at 10pm on ITV2+1. Still need to catch up on the previous episode? You can watch it on ITV Player, or download it in HQ from iTunes UK.

This is it, Vampire Diaries fans – the Season 2 finale draweth nigh. We know last week’s episode felt like a season finale, but this is TVD, where surprises and cliffhangers are the name of the game, and we have a feeling the show has a few doozies left to throw our way in the last new episode until September. If you need the support of your fellow fans during this stressful time, might we recommend joining Vampire-Diaries.net and PHILO for another Virtual Viewing Party on Thursday, May 12th? Chat with your fellow fans as it all goes down and enter to win some awesome prizes!

Here’s how you can participate: Sign up for a PHILO account (you can use your Twitter, your Facebook, or register an on-site account, and download an app for your phone!). The party starts on Thursday, May 12th at 8pm EST and again at 8pm PT. Once you’re there, “check in” to The Vampire Diaries and comment and you’ll be entered to win a Vampire Diaries prize. The best comment as chosen by us (Red and Vee) will win the prize of their choice from those being given away. The remaining prizes will be awarded at random to fans that check-in.

And did we mention you can live-chat with other viewers as you lay dying on your couch or at the computer? Swing by and chat the madness as it happens.

We hope to see you there!

Ratings are in, with the Vampire Diaries pulling in 2.84 million viewers according to TV by the Numbers. Please remember that the Vampire Diaries is the top rated show on the CW and is in no danger of being cancelled, and these figures don’t take into account the people who DVR the show to watch American Idol live (traitors! Yes, you at the back, we’re looking at you!). So don’t take these numbers so seriously that you worry about the fate of the show.

We’re not entirely sure what’s up with iTunes, but it took them a while to get the links up for the US and the UK, and not everyone has been able to access downloads. Just be patient with it.
