And so it ends. Season five came to a close on Thursday night with a heart-breaking implosion (and an impressive explosion) that left our characters unmoored — loved ones lost, and returned. Home is where the heart is, as the saying goes, and in this finale, the Mystic Falls gang proved willing to go to the ends of the earth to be together and to protect their loved ones even when that meant risking their own existence.
There’s a lot to parse from last night’s Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale, but before we get to the handful of Julie Plec’s teases for Season 6, some excellent news: According to Julie, via Entertainment Weekly, Michael Malarkey has been promoted to series regular for Season 6. Enzo will be back. Huzzah!
And here’s a spoiler-filled post-mortem roundup courtesy of Julie, who clears up some foggy moments from last night’s finale and hints at what we can expect when The Vampire Diaries returns in Fall 2014:

According to TV Guide, The Vampire Diaries has added a series regular for Season 6. You can find out who it is by clicking this link, but seriously, please watch the episode first unless you hate experiencing pure happiness and anything that is good or wholesome and just in this world.
Alas, season 5 draws to a close tonight, to be followed by the dreaded hiatus until Season 6 starts later this year. Will the Travelers get their collective butts kicked? Will the Other Side be saved? Who keeps leaving Damon in charge of making all the plans? As with many of Damon’s plans, things will go ‘splodey. As it’s a finale, expect it to be impressive, likely followed by cliffhanger fallout of massive proportions.
Once you’ve finished watching and shaken yourself back to reality, swing by here to rate the season 5 finale of The Vampire Diaries. All discussion about the episode is welcomed and encouraged in the comments of this post.

Previously on The Vampire Diaries, much of the episode was drowned out by the sound of the audience screaming. In fact, some of us are still screaming. We’re not at all ready for the season finale and at the same time are desperate to watch it. This show, man. It’s going to be a loooong day. Here are your recaps and twitter reactions from Promised Land (EP521). Enjoy!
Everyone okay out there? TVD did what TVD does best on Thursday night, and that’s to leave us tweeting in all-caps or stunned into silence. Did that really happen?
Vampire Diaries In Review: Promised Land (EP521) – One Move Left

So, that happened. Maybe.
The Vampire Diaries has always played fast and loose with death. After all, death is practically baked into the premise; when we first met the characters back in season one, Stefan and Damon were undead brothers wooing a girl whose parents were killed in a devastating accident. Death surrounded everyone and everything from the very beginning—and since then, everyone on the show has died at least once, some permanently. Death is such a constant in the TVD universe that being alive and human is actually the rarity at this point (with only Jeremy and Matt claiming that honor amongst the regular characters right now, despite both dying many times in the past). Mystic Falls is a mixed up, morbid world.

Is Stefan Salvatore really dead?!? That’s all fans want to know following The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 21.

Like a baby raccoon holding a handgun, television can force us to feel multiple conflicting emotions all at the same time. You know? First there’s disbelief, then there’s actual belief, then there’s joy, then there’s fear, then it’s back to disbelief again, then it’s time to lay down on a pile of pine cones and go to sleep. Same with a baby raccoon holding a handgun.

Everyone bracing themselves for the Vampire Diaries season finale tonight? If you need some teases, EP Caroline Dries has spoken with TV Guide about what we’re in for tonight.
“The finale will have major effects on our characters and they all will have their own way of dealing and moving on. We think of it as the college metaphor. You leave for college and then when you come home to visit, everything feels a little different and eventually you realize you don’t really live there anymore.”
TV Guide has the first look at Thursday night’s TVD Season 5 finale. Damon and Bonnie are having a nice, friendly, calm discussion…okay, who am I kidding?! Calm is in really short supply with Damon Salvatore right now.
