The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesCountdown to The Return is a series of guest posts by Vampire Diaries fans on topics they’re pondering as we head into Season 2. Blogger Katherine Welsh makes the case for why the show’s central love triangle is necessary for Elena to truly come into her own as an individual.

In a memorable scene near the end of the first season of The Vampire Diaries, Elena Gilbert’s birth mother Isobel tells her that “as long as [she] has a Salvatore on each arm, [she’s] doomed.” Isobel is, of course, referring to Stefan and Damon Salvatore, the vampire brothers who vie for the affections of Elena – and the viewers. At the end of the season, Elena has clearly told both brothers that she wants to be with Stefan, but she hasn’t exactly cut off her strong connection with Damon, either. So is Isobel right? Is Elena doomed?

I wouldn’t condemn her so quickly. What makes this love triangle so compelling is the fact that, while Elena has deep connections with both vampire brothers, she relates to them in very different ways. And while they both love Elena, they fill different emotional and psychological needs for her.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesCountdown to The Return is a series of guest posts by Vampire Diaries fans on topics they’re pondering as we head into Season 2. Blogger Lee MacOdrum looks at the history of werewolves in folklore and pop culture and ponders how Vampire Diaries will make its mark in lycanthrope legend.

In folklore, we know him as vaukalak, hombre lobo, lupo mannaro, loup-garou, lycanthropos. In pop culture, we know him as Lawrence Talbot, David Kessler, Will Randall, Lucian, Jacob Black, Alcide, George Sands. He is the lukos anthropos: the werewolf. And in a few short days, the names of Mason and Tyler Lockwood will be added to his legend. I can’t wait! Ever since Tyler’s wolf-tastic yellow eye peered up at that perplexed paramedic, this particular arc has had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation for Season Two to begin.

One of the things that initially drew me to The Vampire Diaries was the way in which the show’s writers cleverly combined traditional folklore and pop culture perceptions with a pinch of their own original spin to create the show’s vampire lore. Now they have the same opportunity with werewolves and I am stoked.

To date, we know our Lockwood lycanthropes will shift into “real wolf” forms (nod to folklore) and their change will be dependent on the full moon (nod to pop culture), but if the residents of Mystic Falls are going to make it out of this one alive (well, some of them anyway), two vital questions still need answering: How does one become a werewolf? And how does one kill a werewolf?

While we wait in fevered anticipation for The Vampire Diaries reveal, I thought it might be fun to take a quick look at how folklore and pop culture werewolf mythology has answered these questions before.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesCountdown to The Return is a series of guest posts by Vampire Diaries fans on topics they’re pondering as we head into Season 2. Blogger Erin Brown is having a fangirl crisis and a certain Lockwood’s animal magnetism is to blame.

For the record, I’m a Stefan girl; I’ve always been a Stefan girl.

I’d like to blame David Boreanaz for all of this, of course – Angel/Angelus, aka the Original Captain Brood – for instilling my love of a tortured expression on a handsome face, but in truth, I’ve always loved a good moper with supernatural abilities and chiseled features; one who is ever-searching for his redemption by playing the good guy and being the better man…or at least an undead version of.

Paul Wesley, playing Stefan Salvatore, of course filled all of these expectations. The eyes, the abs, the forehead that has more acting skills than all the Baldwin brothers put together (what are there, like a million? Forgive me, but I lost count at William) and the smouldering, bruised expression? If we were going on stereotypes, it made more sense than chocolate and peanut butter: Stefan Salvatore had me well before hello.

But as the premiere of the next chapter in Mystic Falls history draws nigh, I find myself needing to make a confession.

It’s the eve of a new season and I am being seriously courted by another team.

Yes.

I’m looking at YOU, Tyler Lockwood. With your cougar-loving, bad boy, my-daddy-issues-have-issues ways, and anti-emo-Jeremyness…ness.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesCountdown to The Return is a series of guest posts by Vampire Diaries fans on topics they’re pondering as we head into Season 2. First up, author Dianne Sylvan examines why the relationship between Stefan and Damon is so compelling and why she hopes the tension will continue throughout the new season.

Vampire romances these days are less than a dime a dozen – they’re becoming almost a parody of themselves. Take one misunderstood teen girl, one immortal hottie, add a quirky best friend. Add clueless adults, a heaping helping of angst, some kind of bad guy to cause the couple problems (preferably bad vampires or, better yet, werewolves), and stir.

What, then, sets The Vampire Diaries apart from the rest? Why does it have us all salivating over the upcoming season…even jaded old ladies like myself, who cheerfully admits she avoids most vampire fiction like the plague (even though I write it myself)?

I think we all know the answer to that one…and no, it’s not Damon…or, not just Damon. As much as we all love a bad boy like Damon (Okay, “bad boy” doesn’t quite cover it, given that he’s a murdering sociopath), or a redeemed (sort of) bad boy like Stefan (who, let’s not forget, has killed at least one person that we know of, and probably more before he had whatever Great Revelation that made him give up the people-juice), both character types are hardly unique these days.

Yes, I’m dying to see the havoc Katherine wreaks on Mystic Falls…in fact I’m hoping she’ll blow the place apart and get away scot free, just to shake up the idea that the powerful female character always has to get it in the end. (Please note Exhibits A-E: Lexi, Bree, Grams, Pearl, Anna.) Yes, I’m looking forward to learning more about Tyler’s…um, animal control issues. And yes, I’m eager to see the development of Damon as an individual, and worried, I admit, that he might get a little too human, too soon. But what I’m really looking forward to is that very thing that makes TVD so fascinating: the relationship between the brothers Salvatore.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesBig thanks to Kidult writer Lee Hernandez for giving us the heads up on his chat with Michael Trevino. If you’ve somehow managed to avoid spoilers concerning Tyler, here’s your warning that this puts those spoilers front and center (for both the book and the TV series). For those who don’t mind knowing, let the speculation on the hows, whens, and whys take over the comments.

What’s coming up for your character, Tyler Lockwood, in this season’s remaining episodes?

Tyler is going to evolve. In the beginning of the season he was ruthless and mean to everybody, and now he’s kind of questioning himself. He’s at the stage where he doesn’t know what his issue is, so he’s his own worst enemy—he reacts violently, but then questions himself right after.

Read the entire interview at Kidult.

And if you’ve been wondering about Tyler’s relative absence during “the tomb chapter,” BuddyTV has some interesting spec about what Tyler’s role may be as we head towards Season One’s end. (Again: spoilers for the books and TV series.)

The Vampire Diaries TV: Damon mocking Stefan's journal, oh noes!We thought we’d point out some details that caught our eye in all of the recently released footage from The Vampire Diaries pilot. How about you guys – notice anything significant? Speculate away!

We’ve lumped the more spoilery stuff near the end, so here’s the Obligatory Spoiler Warning for those who’d rather not make any possible connection between plot points in the books and the TV series.

  • The names of Elena’s parents: Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers Gilbert. Elena’s parents are never named in the books, so this is a special bit of canon unique to the TV series. (Intentional Batman and Bionic Woman references? Probably not, but we’re geeks – sue us.) Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert, we might add, died on May 23, 2009 – yep, yesterday, and two days after the upfronts.
  • We note a distinct lack of Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena and Jeremy’s aunt, Jenna Moyer (Sara Canning), in any of the footage. And though it’s not so notable that Mr. Tanner didn’t make it in there, we’re thinking of you, Ben “OMG, it’s Cowboy from jPod!” Ayres fans.
  • Why, hello there, significant glance between Stefan and Matt.
  • AND HERE’S WHERE WE GET INTO THE SPOILERY STUFF.

Paul Wesley as Stefan SalvatoreOne of the things that the Vampire Diaries promotional trailers have shown us is that Stefan has his own diary, and seems as passionate about writing in it as Elena is hers. This isn’t something that has stemmed from the books, as the only diaries that were kept in those were by Elena and, later on, Bonnie.

Stefan keeping a diary is certainly an interesting twist that allows for exploration into his character. While in the books we can see Stefan’s feelings revealed in his thoughts when we’re reading from his point of view, this doesn’t translate so easily to screen (which is a common problem with adapting many books to television and film). A journal provides a simple and effective way to reveal what we need to know about Stefan. It also removes some of the cheese-factor of having a voice over. Rather than having the protagonists talk to the audience, the audience is instead reading the characters’ diaries, making it somehow more personal.

As logical as having Stefan keep a journal is, it’s a move that has surprised quite a few fans. A.M. Hartnett asked us what we thought about Stefan having a diary, and we in turn asked our followers on Twitter. We’ve had a range of responses, from it being weird but making sense, to diaries being for girls (any other guys out there want to hit back on that one and join me with an indignant ‘oi!’?), and even that it would be unlikely that Stefan would dare keep a diary because Damon would mock him mercilessly for it. ;) That could well happen in the TV series and I, for one, look forward to a scene with Stefan clutching his diary possessively while wearing a wounded expression.

Because it is an interesting question, we thought we’d open the question up to the wider audience here on our blog. So, what do you all think about Stefan keeping a diary?
