Paging Dr. Fell: Why The New Deal (EP310) Was A Big DealOkay, so The New Deal (EP310) was a big deal for a whole slew of reasons (those are spoilers we can continue to suppress here for the international fans), but we know that fans of The Vampire Diaries book series had reason to be very excited about last night’s episode. After nearly two and a half seasons, a fan favorite book character finally made her debut on TV: Say hello to Dr. Meredith Fell, played by Torrey DeVitto.

If you’ve been following this website since the beginning, when we were covering the pilot’s development and production – waaaaaay back in early 2009 – you know there was a big sticking point with book series fans: Where’s Meredith? We blogged about it one, or two, or three times. In April 2009, Julie Plec acknowledged Meredith’s absence from the pilot for the first time, saying: “Be patient, Meredith fans.” And now here we are.

Zap2It has a nice write-up on Julie and Kevin Williamson finally making good on their promise to bring Meredith into the TV series fold. As is to be expected, there have been some changes made to the character in translating her from page to screen – TV!Meredith is now a Fell and is older than her book counterpart – but Julie hints that the good doctor will have a bigger role to play as we head into the rest of Season 3:

Book Meredith is unique in that she’s one character who is completely unaffected by Damon’s charms — in fact, she makes him a little bit nervous. Most of Meredith’s scenes are with Alaric and Damon, so viewers can look forward to seeing just how Damon reacts to a little romance getting in the way of his bromance. “She’s a Fell, so she’s got a point of view about how to handle the vampire business in this town,” Plec teases. We’re sure Damon will be thrilled.

We know she had a very brief appearance on last night’s episode, but how do book fans feel about finally having Meredith on their TV screens? Let us know in the comments!

The Vampire Diaries TV Series: Zap2It‘s Carina MacKenzie talks with Joseph Morgan (who finally stepped out in his own shoes last week) about the long-awaited arrival of Klaus, doing his research on the character, playing with the fans on Twitter, and garnering fandom support for the charity Positive Women. He also addresses Kevin Williamson’s description of Klaus as someone who can “out-Damon Damon.”

Ian Somerhalder does something very specific on the show that he’s very good at, and I don’t think anyone could imitate him. I certainly didn’t want to imitate him on the show to out-do him; I didn’t think that was the way to approach it. So I thought, because he’s very expressive with his eyes and he’s very sarcastic, I thought that the way to go up against Ian Somerhalder in a scene, is to play with stillness. I wanted to undercut him and to intimidate Damon with how comfortable Klaus was being there, and to get into his personal space. Rather than try to outdo him at his own game, I felt I had to bring my own game to the table, and make him play on my terms.

Hey, Vampire Diaries fans, do you fancy owning a black rose as found by Damon in a bouquet at the end of Shadow Souls? L.J. Smith is giving you the chance to win one of ten of the very roses featured on the left, which are genuine roses dipped in black enamel and edged with 24-karat gold. The grand prize winner will also recieve a rose plated entirely in 24-karat gold. If you want to enter the contest, head on over to the contest page for more information and to find out how. Sadly, due to how fragile these roses are and the costs and risks of shipping, the contest is only open to residents of the USA.

And courtesy of the fantastic LJS Cover Resource, we’ve got a bunch of new book covers for you. Some will be familiar on account of being variations on the North American covers, others are based on recognisable TV series stills. But there are a few brand new ones in there, with some featured below. Check them out in the book gallery.

The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesThe casting call/sides for a pivotal role popped up this morning – and to say we’re excited is quite the understatement. Time lines change, but it looks like we can expect a certain Big Bad to appear sooner rather than later, possibly even by episode 216. Highlight the casting call for spoilers:

Klaus is late-20′s to mid-30′s. He’s handsome, charming, intelligent, with a sharp wit. He’s the only person who can out-Damon Damon. That’s because he’s got a thousand years on him. Klaus is one of the Originals. Possibly the oldest. But you’d never know it because he keeps up with the times.

But rather than just play the dreamcasting game (which is a blast, don’t get us wrong), we’re more interested in speculating what this character’s arrival is going to do to Team Badass. Mark our words – things are going to get ugly in Mystic Falls.

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS & SPECULATION! “I WAS TEARING PRETTY WHITE THROATS WHEN YOUR ANCESTORS WERE BUILDING THE COLOSSEUM…”

Thanks to the LJS Cover Resource (all hail Lorraine!), we’ve got some Vampire Diaries covers to share with you.

First up, the reprints of the original series in Denmark with some very striking covers. Going with a white/light theme really makes these stand out, and the artsy poses of Elena really add to the wow factor. And the subtle background of veins? Awesome. The Awakening also has an interesting title change, which translates to ‘Brothers of Darkness’ (thanks, Katrine!). Appropriate, no? Danish fans can look forward to buying these from Tellerup over the Summer. The Awakening and The Struggle will be published on May 10th, The Fury on June 10th, and Dark Reunion on July 16th.

We also have the cover for the Italian version of Shadow Souls (pictured right), which should already be available to buy in bookstores.
