Conflicto - the Portuguese cover for The StruggleMany thanks to the people over at cronicasvampiricas.pt for sending us this! Part two of the Vampire Diaries, The Struggle has now been released in Portugal. Titled as Conflicto, it comes with a brand new cover. You click on the image to see a larger version.

Hopefully we’ll have dates soon for when the Portuguese versions of The Fury and Dark Reunion will be published. And don’t think we can’t hear you cover collectors cursing about spending more money at the back there! ;)

If you know of any publication dates for the Vampire Diaries that we’re not aware of, please let us know!

The Vampire Diaries: The Return: NightfallLooks like this one slipped past us: Harper/Alloy’s official book site has launched its first contest – an enter to win for a complete set of The Vampire Diaries (The Awakening/The Struggle and The Fury/Dark Reunion omnibus editions and The Return: Nightfall), autographed by L.J. Smith.

Read the complete rules here. No purchase necessary, must be 13 years of age or older to enter and a resident of the United States (we know – that sucks, but we’ll keep an eye out for similar contests open internationally, never fear).

Enter the contest! You have until August 18, 2009 at noon ET.

With people hearing about the Vampire Diaries for the first time, one of the things that they’re curious about is what the vampires in the series are like. For those interested, we’re going to list the main characteristics and traits of the vampires in the world of L.J. Smith’s Vampire Diaries book series. Quite how many of these things will make it into the TV series and how many of them will be changed we have no clue, but we know a few already have.

If you want to find out all about the vampires in the TV series, head on over to Vampire Lore 101: The TV series edition.

BuyTV – the online/G4 syndicated show that features tech and entertainment product reviews for Buy.com – has a Spotlight Review on L.J. Smith’s The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening/The Struggle featured on their site this week. And by “review” we mean a 43-second paid advertising spot.

Interesting that they’re pushing the first omnibus edition, which was released two years ago, and not The Return: Nightfall, which was released only three months ago. Random? Highly unlikely.

The Awakening and The StruggleIn recent months there has been an influx of new people in the fandom who have just read The Vampire Diaries, in particular the double-volume reprints from 2007. In fact, many newcomers to the books have been known to assume that there are just three books in the series rather than the actual five. People are surprised to discover that the books were originally printed as individual volumes, and even more surprised to find out how long the series has existed.

The Vampire Diaries has been around since 1991, and has been reprinted many times over in many different countries. You can imagine that with the original four books alone, that generates quite a lot of covers. We figured it might be cool to showcase some of these various covers from the original series, from the old to the new, the interesting to the bizarre.

Thanks to Lorraine at the LJS Cover Resource and Incanto for providing these covers for the article. As always, you can expect some minor spoilers ahead. Clicking on the picture thumbnails will take you to larger, clearer versions of the covers.

Read on and view the covers…
