XXScreeners for the January 5th episode of The Vampire Diaries, The New Deal (EP310), were sent to select TV bloggers/reporters today, and KSiteTV has a (mildly spoilery) preview of what TVD fans can expect when the show returns next week.

7. Shippers will be happy. Which shippers? The CW gods said not to tell… but I can say at least three fan-groups get to see their favorite characters interacting. The choice of names that Klaus lists as “Elena’s loved ones” is also particularly interesting. And some shippers might want to get their screen-capturing software handy.

XXHiatus drags on, but every day we’re getting closer to January 5th and the return to Mystic Falls. To help tide you over, Zap2it has some insight from Julie Plec about what’s coming up for Caroline and Tyler, why Elena and Alaric are getting worried about Jeremy, and some hints about Bonnie’s as-yet-unseen mom.

“Tyler and Caroline have a lot to overcome,” Julie says. “Because Tyler, on his own, has a lot to overcome. It’s pretty bleak, right now, and it’s only going to start to get bleaker before it gets better. “

In case you missed it, Persia White has already been cast as Bonnie’s mom, and we can’t wait to see her in action when the show resumes!

Vampire Diaries Mid-Season Return Preview in TV Guide MagazineWe know you’re getting restless for the return of The Vampire Diaries, but TV Guide Magazine comes to the rescue with a brief preview of what we can expect starting Thursday, January 5th with The New Deal (EP310). Here’s a taster from the article (which also mentions Torrey DeVitto‘s upcoming arc and The Vampire Diaries coming in at #4 in the magazine’s Fan Favorites poll) via Julie Plec (out of respect for the UK viewers getting Homecoming next Tuesday, we’ll put it behind a spoiler block):

“Mystic Falls is in the hands of Klaus. Stefan and Klaus want to destroy each other, but they’re unwilling to face the consequences if things go wrong. It is a Mexican standoff.”

The piece also touches on what to expect with Elena, Tyler and Caroline, Alaric, and Bonnie and features a new episode still of Damon and Elena. Pick up the December 8-15 issue (Fan Favorite winner Community on the over) at your local newsstand. Thanks to Denise for the article!

If you’re keeping track, these are post-hiatus episode titles we know so far: The New Deal (EP310), Our Town (EP311), and thanks to director Jeffrey Hunt, we know he’s handling Bringing Out The Dead (EP313). (Speaking of, he’s tweeting from the TVD set, so follow him on Twitter: @HuntVision.)

UPDATE: And we can now confirm that EP312 is titled The Ties That Bind.

Interviews: Michael Trevino With AOL TV + Joseph Morgan With The InsiderAOL TV brings us this (slightly spoilery) interview with Michael Trevino, where he talks about tonight’s episode (Homecoming, EP309) and about where things stand with Tyler right now, as well as what might be coming up for him in the future.

We’ve seen Tyler return to his douchebag Season 1 default again. Are you enjoying playing that? He seems to be way less angst-y now that he’s a hybrid.
Joseph:

I mean, I’m personally having fun with it because it’s a whole new level and arc that I can play around with and have fun. But also, I think there was a lot of responsibility in becoming the first successful hybrid, so I think it’s pretty cool to have a different supernatural ability and for me to personally just be able to act that out. It’s fun, why not?

Speaking of acting out and having fun, Joseph Morgan answered some questions for The Insider about training for Immortals, the question of which project is bloodier, and he gives a few hints about tonight’s episode. He also talks a little bit about the fine line he walks playing Klaus as both villainous and sympathetic

Insider: So you think tonight will bring people back to Klaus’ side?
Joseph:
Yes, I think that’s fair to say. It’s such a fine line when you’re writing for a villain: they have to bring some humanity and sympathy to the character, so people understand him, but you don’t want to turn him good. I think Julie [Plec] and Kevin [Williamson, creators] are on the same page with me there. It’s difficult to walk that tightrope of making people care about him, but also have him be your villain. I really think they do a wonderful job of that. So many people on Twitter are confused by their own feelings about the character – they hate to love him — and that’s so exciting to me. And a huge compliment.

Julie Plec & Michael Trevino On Tonight's Mid-Season Finale & MoreEntertainment Weekly caught up with Julie Plec and Michael Trevino to discuss Homecoming (EP309), tonight’s mid-season finale of The Vampire Diaries. Julie gives a heads up on who will not be in tonight’s episode (stay strong, Jeremy and Alaric fans) and Stefan’s still-ambiguous motivations, while Michael teases Tyler’s complicated loyalty to Klaus and how that will affect his relationship with Caroline. Oh, and if you’re worried about cliffhangers?

In general, tonight’s episode is more about setting the stage for the show’s January return than leaving us with cliffhangers. “Rather than makin’ you suffer with ‘Oh god, what’s gonna happen?’, it’s more like, ‘Hey, this is the next part of the roller coaster that you’re about to jump on,’” Plec says. “So it will very much get the audience talking about the next chapter.”

And The Futon Critic‘s Jim Halterman chats with Vampire Diaries Executive Producer Julie Plec about the ongoing storylines of Season 3, closing out “the ghost chapter,” Stefan/Elena/Damon, Bonnie and Jeremy, Tyler, Alaric, the Originals, and standards for a Vampire Diaries villain.

Julie Plec: The definition of villain for us has always been someone who is willing to do the most extreme things in the most extreme circumstances without care for what it does to other people. But always driven by their own particular need, want or desire. Nobody is just evil for the sake of being evil and some of the fun that we like to be able to have on the show is exploring why people do what they do and act like who they act like.

Michael Trevino Teases Homecoming & Tyler's Internal StruggleMichael Trevino did a series of interviews yesterday and MTV Hollywood Crush is first out of the gate with his teases for tonight’s Vampire Diaries mid-season finale, Homecoming (EP309), and the complicated relationship developing between Klaus and Tyler.

“It was one thing for me to become a werewolf and live out this werewolf storyline. But when our executive producer, Julie Plec, told me I was going to become a hybrid I got really excited,” he said. “Because there’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that, especially in our world of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ where Tyler is the first successful hybrid that’s made. Now we have a whole different arc for Tyler. As an actor, it’s given me more to play around with to tell our story. And now I’m hanging around with the big bad Klaus.”

Michael On The New Pep In Tyler's Step + Steven On Anna's Intentions & FamilyLatina Magazine caught up with Michael Trevino to talk Tyler’s new situation heading into tonight’s episode, including the numerous pros and cons, and how it will affect his relationship with Caroline. He also talks about his on-screen chemistry with Candice Accola:

In the season premiere, Tyler and Caroline had an intense sex scene. Was that a fun scene for you and Candice Accola to shoot?

Oh, absolutely. {Laughs}. It was our season premiere and it has been a long time coming. A lot of people are fans of Caroline and Tyler being together. So our producers throwing it in there in the first episode of the season—I thought it was great. And it turned out pretty awesome. Me and Candice, we’re really close. We’re great friends, and we have awesome chemistry. We were jumping on each other and laughing. Candice is a gorgeous girl.

Michael On The New Pep In Tyler's Step + Steven On Anna's Intentions & FamilyAOL TV got the lowdown from Steven R. McQueen on the ghost story line coming to a head in the next few episodes:

Tonight’s episode, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ sees our high school characters head back to class for the first day of the new school year. “Jeremy’s pretty much trying to balance out everything he has going on in reality as opposed to these ghosts from his past,” McQueen explained. “In Episode 6, you’ll learn the intentions of the ghosts, and I think in Episode 7 you kind of start to see the consequences for their actions.”

And Steven tells Zap2It that the relationship between Jeremy and Elena will be highlighted in these new circumstances:

Though we haven’t seen much interaction between Jeremy and Elena lately, over the next few episodes that sibling bond will be seen. “There’s been so much going on. They’re family, they care about each other, but they’re both dealing with their own stuff right now,” McQueen says. “We have some moments coming up where you see that at the end of the day, they’re there for each other, they’re family.”

All this kissing stuff isn’t just fun and games for Candice Accola and Michael Trevino: it’s taken a certain amount of time for the off-screen buddies to get used to it. Hear what the actress has to say about the on-screen romance in this week’s Vampire Diaries Bite from TV Guide.

READ AND WATCH AT TV GUIDE.

And AOL TV‘s Jean Bentley caught up with Michael Trevino on the Atlanta set to discuss the same awkward kissing situation, working with Joseph Morgan, and what he hopes for as Season 3 progresses.

Do you think he’s a different Tyler than the one we met in Season 1? He used to be kind of a douche.
Yeah, he was an a–hole. He was a jerk. I kind of like the jerk. I mean, Season 1 he was just that typical jock who was a jerk, and then Season 2 we dove into this werewolf lineage that ran in his family, and now he’s just owning up to it. It’s just him and his mother — every other older male figure that has come into his life is now gone. He’s in a relationship with Caroline, who happens to be a vampire. If you’ve ever been in a relationship with somebody, whatever they’re going through you’re probably going to go through as well to be there for them and support them. So some of the obstacles that Caroline ends up going through in the beginning part of our season, Tyler’s going to be going through as well.
