Call your friends, call your family, call everyone you know: Following the CW’s big freakin’ deal with Netflix for instant streaming rights to Seasons 1 and 2 of The Vampire Diaries, Hulu and The CW announced today that The Vampire Diaries Season 3 (along with other new and returning shows of the CW’s 2011-2012 television season) will be available for streaming on both Hulu’s ad-supported free service and their subscription Hulu Plus service. From the press release, via TV By The Numbers:
With this agreement, Hulu Plus will be the only online subscription service to carry in-season episodes of The CW’s drama and reality series, with the five most recent episodes of each show available to subscribers the next day after broadcast. Users of the free, ad-supported Hulu service will be able to watch five episodes of current season programming eight days after airing on The CW.
Available later this year, programming on Hulu and Hulu Plus will begin with the nine series on The CW’s Fall 2011 schedule, including new series “Ringer,” “Hart Of Dixie” and “The Secret Circle,” as well as returning hits “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “Supernatural,” “Nikita,” “90210” and “America’s Next Top Model.”
This? IS AWESOME. Speaking personally, I have friends who don’t own televisions and watch their TV shows through Hulu and only only Hulu. Maybe you have friends like that, too, and it’s time to let them know what they’ve been missing. (Get them caught up on Season 1 and 2 first, of course.)

Now with a serial-killer drama in development at Fox, [Williamson] must lean increasingly on Diaries’ co-showrunner Plec, 39, whom he dubs his unofficial “life partner.” Jokes Plec: “Kevin and I have a highly functional dysfunctional system.”

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Nina Dobrev on last night’s CW Premiere Party red carpet and she talks Elena, her evolving relationship with Stefan and Damon, and – oh, yes – Katherine. As for what to expect from Elena this season:
“She’s no longer letting the men in her life dictate what happens. She’s going to rise up and become a woman and fight,” Dobrev says.

This time last year I was reviewing The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season on DVD, and now I’m reviewing the second season on DVD. Time certainly seems to fly in this series, right? Unless we’re stuck in the middle of a hiatus, of course.
The following review is based on the UK DVD set. As far as we’re aware, both the DVD and Blu-ray editions in the UK and the US will have the exact same features, so what I’m reviewing is most likely what you’ll be getting regardless of what version you purchase.

In case you haven’t heard (but you have, right?), The Vampire Diaries will have a new 9 p.m. partner this fall on the CW: The Secret Circle, based on L.J. Smith’s trilogy of the same name, adapted for the screen by Kevin Williamson (executive producer, The Vampire Diaries) and Andrew Miller (creator, Imaginary Bitches web series). Yep, an Alloy Entertainment/L.J. Smith/Kevin Williamson block on Thursday nights, which has us long-time fans of both series pinching ourselves and wondering what year it is. (The Secret Circle was originally published in 1992.)

The series stars Britt Robertson as Cassie (center) and (left to right) Thomas Dekker as Adam, Jessica Parker Kennedy as new (i.e.: non-book) character Melissa, Louis Hunter as Nick, Shelley Hennig as Diana, and Phoebe Tonkin as Faye.
The short version: We really, really liked The Secret Circle pilot.
NOTE: Yes, there are major changes from the books, but we think most fans are braced for that and we won’t dwell on the details here. (Tierney Bricker has an excellent breakdown if you’re curious about books vs. pilot. Please be aware that there have been changes to the pilot since the posting of the article.)
