The last few episodes of The Vampire Diaries have been eventful, to say the least, so it’s time for some postmortems: executive producer Julie Plec has done a bunch of interviews in the wake of the big, huge events of Down the Rabbit Hole (EP414) and Stand by Me (EP415), but we don’t want to risk spoiling anyone in the U.K. or other countries that aren’t quite up to date with the show. And these interviews, obviously, are really spoilery. So we’re giving you the links, and you can read at your own risk. Enjoy!

The CW has also released a new promo for the March 14th return of the show, called “Losing Control.” It doesn’t look like there’s much (if any) new footage, but ooh, shiny:

TVLine has some more from their talk with Julie Plec about the Salvatores, Klaus, Caroline & Tyler, and more coming up in the second half of season four. This passage about Klaus is intriguing:
“The beauty of Klaus, much like Damon, is that his horrible misdeeds are all born out of a place of a complete lack of trust and faith as a result of being repeatedly betrayed and rejected in his life. I’m not saying I excuse his horrific behavior, but it’s born from a very human place. Once someone’s got a strong core of humanity, there’s hope for them – [they may] just not necessarily wake up tomorrow as Man of the Year. Klaus will continue to be a very complicated character. Much like Damon in the first couple seasons, when he feels backed up against the wall, he lashes out in very, very destructive ways. It makes it impossible to forgive. And yet, the redemption of Klaus as a character-long arc is something we always talk about.”
Also find out what the future holds for Tyler after his family tragedy, Jeremy with his new “career,” and more.

Happy premiere day! If you woke up in desperate need of some Vampire Diaries content to get you through your morning, you’re in luck: Julie Plec talked to TV Guide about Elena’s transition and how it affects her and the triangle. Without getting into too many of the specifics (click through if you want to see!), we can give you this interesting bit:
“Elena is uncompromising about is the length she’ll go to protect the people she cares about and as a vampire that takes on a whole new meaning. So I do think there is some element of concern on the part of her closest friends to make sure she’s not losing her way or losing sight of herself in all this – especially how it relates to the Salvatore brothers.”
And in the first Vampire Diaries Bite video of the season, Robyn Ross gives some tantalizing teases about the premiere. (Warning: Slightly spoilery! Watch at your own risk!)

Wondering where the various love triangles of The Vampire Diaries will be when the show returns in October? TVLine has the goods, straight from Julie Plec. On Elena’s future:
“All these things that she’s experienced with Damon and with Stefan will have different context for her as she’s becoming this new person,” previews Plec. “This circumstance, which is pretty horrific, is going to make them all care about each other even more deeply and argue even more intensely and fracture even more greatly and love as deeply as possible.”
There’s more about Elena/Stefan/Damon, plus intel on Caroline/Tyler/Klaus and a potential new triangle or two.

TVLine recently interviewed Julie Plec at the ATX Television Festival about Elena’s journey, Klaus’s fate, and more – including whether our wayward students will ever actually graduate from high school. And on Rebekah’s role next season:
“And with Rebekah, who is so vulnerable and damaged but has that tough exterior, we get to see a queen bee in action; we get to see a mean girl. As we get into the second half of their senior year, here’s Rebekah, still in Mystic Falls, heading back to school, completely ostracized from the community of people that she knows because of what she did to Elena and Matt [in the finale]. She’s completely loathed by the one guy [Matt] that she had a crush on, and also by her past love [Stefan]. What’s she going to do about that?”

They also caught up with Nina Dobrev and asked her how Elena will react next season to her big transition. In a sentence: “Yeah, I think she’s gonna freak out.”

We’ve got a few more great Julie Plec interviews from the ATX Festival for you! At E!Online, she talks about changes from the books, whether Damon will ever hear “I love you,” and how Elena’s big transition will reboot things for season four:
“In a way when we start over again, we’re starting over—we’re starting a new story. Same world, same characters, same feelings, same everything but for our ingénue, and our heroine, we are beginning. It is a beginning for her and what was exciting about it is we knew we were going to do it and so everything we did all year long was leading up to this. This is a girl who misses her parents, this is a girl who regrets the person that she has become and wonders if her parents would be ashamed of her. This is a girl who is trying desperately to hold onto a friendship that reminds her of when she was human. And all that stuff, the Wickery Bridge stuff, everything was all leading knowing that at the end we were going to her driving off the bridge again. And then when we started breaking the fourth season, it makes everything feel so new and so fresh and so, in that way, it takes us back to that great feeling of the beginning of that first season where it’s about a girl with a secret and it’s a becoming, it’s a transition; it makes it all so grounded in character and more interpersonal suspense than big bold epic mythology.”

And over at Forever YA, Julie discusses some more specific changes from the books, fan culture, and the evolution of characters, as well as some of her favorite characters and interactions to write. On the tone of the show:
“We have a rule that we remind ourselves of all the time and that we try to follow at all costs. I mean, obviously some rules are made to broken, but when you set out to follow it it really gives a good foundation, and that is: These are real people. These are real young people in a real world — a world of science, a world of history — and that everything we do has to somehow emanate from a real world point of view. Even our magic, we try to always keep it grounded into the earth, into the elements. You know, of course we break that rule all the time out of desperation. But if we always connect everything back to love, to family, to loss, to loyalty, to friendship, then we’ve found that we’ve been able to keep it tonally in check.”

Julie Plec, Jose Molina and Arielle Kebbel appeared at a panel at the ATX Television Festival over the weekend, and Julie gave some hints about what might be coming up for season 4. As Jose Molina said,
“We have the road map for next season and before we broke for vacation, I was staring and looking at everything we have planned and this stupid grin spread over my face,” he said. “I was like, ‘They are going to s—.’ Already we have so many moments where people are going to freak.”
We’re not going to quote anything else, in case you don’t want spoilers, but read on to find out what relationships might be rekindled, who might or might not be coming back – and at least one long-awaited character we’ll finally meet.

We’re coming up on the end of the season, which means that EP Julie Plec is in high demand as everyone, fans and journalists alike, tries to figure out what’s going to happen. Luckily for us, Julie has done a bunch of interviews recently shedding some light on what’s to come. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Julie at the WB TV: Out of the Box exhibit and got some scoop on a potential season four:
“We’ve got a lot going on, a lot of really amazing character moves, great romance, a new mystery, a new villain and I’m really excited about it. We’re feeling pretty good about it already and we’ve only been talking about it for two weeks.”
And watch the video for more about the end of this season:

Meanwhile, over at Entertainment Weekly, Julie gave some episode-specific intel on each of the four remaining season 3 episodes. On this Thursday’s episode, Heart of Darkness (EP319):
“Yes. There is a lot of steam in this episode, and a lot of shirtlessness,” Plec says. “As I said at the Paley event when somebody asked me about romance, this whole season has been so sad. Everybody’s broken up, all these love affairs are unfulfilled, and there’s lots of despair and depression and tragedy. We kick a little romance back into high gear with the return of the show next week.”

There’s another great interview with Julie at HitFix, where she teases the elements that went into filming the season finale:
“No, but we had an underwater unit, a movie-sized underwater unit. We had massive, massive stunts involving an automobile. We have a huge fight sequence. We have a huge horror sequence. And then we have probably the biggest and most substantial series of emotional moments that the entire season has had.”
She also answers the eternal question of whether Elena and friends actually go to school!
And if that’s not quite enough for you, over at Zap2it, Julie teases a “major motel moment” in Heart of Darkness (EP319) and a beautiful but sad moment at the dance in Do Not Go Gentle (EP320).
