Craig Byrne of KSiteTV/VampireSite.net attended the CW’s press Q&A and screening today for The Last Day (EP220), tomorrow night’s new episode of The Vampire Diaries, and has posted some interesting comments from Julie Plec in regards to the death spoilers that have been making the rounds:
“We said from the beginning it’s a vampire show, and in vampire shows, the stakes are high and the death count has to match that, because if we don’t follow through on the stakes that we’re setting out – if you don’t believe that the consequences are life and death, then we’re not doing our job. And unfortunately, we’ve set into motion, unfortunately for our characters, this ritual that needs a lot of sacrificial elements, and so if that ritual happens, and when it happens and how it happens, if it goes off without a hitch, there will be a lot of loss of life. Maybe what we were thinking of at the beginning of the year, we could have modified it a little bit, but yeah. We had to pay off what we set up.”

Julie also commented on “fan favorite” Elijah (“We all have the sickest crush on Daniel Gillies”) and gives a rough idea of what fans can expect in Vampire Diaries Season 3:
Plec mentions that Season 3 will be “The Year of the Originals,” but she does not know yet – or is at least not saying – if Klaus or Elijah will be on for a full time basis next year. “That is a decision that gets made when we actually break story for Season Three,” she says.
