The CW have posted a new trailer for the Vampire Diaries TV series on their YouTube channel. Continuing with the ‘love sucks’ theme of the promotional banners we saw last week, this trailer seems to echo the second banner (with Stefan, Damon and Elena lying in the grass) in tone. Let us know what you think!

I adore this! It’s got the whole ‘portent of doom’ thing that was at the beginning of the series.
I’m assuming the hair-stroking is Stefan and the neck-grabbing is Damon?

You know, I’m getting sick to death of assumptions being made about the story of the Vampire Diaries based solely on trailers and promo images. I’ve just seen a comment on twitter that really annoyed me. Based on this trailer, the person essentially made a sarcastic comment that TVD was going to be just like Twilight with that whole ‘possessive and controlling makes for a heart throb’ theme.
Vampire Diaries Is. Not. Like. That.
It is not a case of control = sexy. That’s never implied in the books. In fact, Damon’s attempts to control Elena are virtually always thwarted, and the one time that he succeeds it’s made very clear in the books that this is a BAD thing, and not something that Elena finds at all sexy and compelling. The whole story is a testament to Elena’s independence and force of will. This is a girl who is not willingly controlled by anyone, and that includes Damon.
As for the trailer: yes, Damon’s hand wraps around Elena’s throat, but that’s actually an element of Damon showing that he can be both wicked or gentle in the blink of an eye, and that the viewer shouldn’t forget that. Damon is sexy, but dangerous as hell, and that’s something that Elena is VERY aware of in the books, and the reader is made aware of it too. He’s a bad boy. He’s never painted as some kind of romantic hero like Edward, he never even tries to be ‘good’. When Damon is at his worst, you feel trepidation. You never think it’s romantic.
Damon Salvatore is a prime example of the anti-hero, and that’s why we all love him.

I do, too. The hands around Nina’s face is the best part by far. If you’re a fan, you know immediately who’s who – a more subtle version of the banners (with Stefan going for Elena’s mouth and Damon for her throat).
This reminds me a bit (in tone) of the LaChappelle UK Lost promo – not nearly as high drama as that, but the dreamy, staged quality. Not to sound back-handed, but there’s definite effort here.
Not the biggest fan of the voice over’s tone, and I think someone on LJ nailed it when they said it’s so punny (“love sucks, love bites” etc.) that it borders on brilliant. But it doesn’t bother me. Besides, I can just watch the whole hand dance on mute and be happy.
Oh, and Stefan in plaid…?

You know, I still see a dream sequence from Elena’s POV with a ménage à trois coming at some point. That’s the only reason I can come up with for all the groping.

I’d like Damon to be groping some citrus. Damon/orange is pretty much canon at this point. Plus that tiny detail of him never fails to please – the hedonist who doesn’t technically need food, but indulges anyway.
I actually think the handling of sex in this show is going to be verrrrry interesting, particularly if it’s tied into all the blood exchanging going down. Thinking of a particular scene in The Struggle here.
