One of the moments that a lot of Vampire Diaries book fans have been waiting for is finally here. We have our Alaric Saltzman! Keck’s Exclusives at TV Guide Magazine has reported that Matt Davis (What About Brian, Legally Blonde) will be playing the role of our favourite substitute history teacher, and will be making his first appearance (a little later than originally anticipated) in the November 12th episode of the show.

He is pretty good looking (though not particularly in that picture). They probably upped his age and also chose an older actor so he doesn’t blend in with the rest of the cast (A lot of the cast members playing high school students are technically passed Alaric’s age in the books in real life).
If there is a Meredith coming, I’m sort of thinking she’s possibly older than the other characters (maybe she already graduated high school?) At college or taken a year off to travel or whatever. We’ll see what they’ll have planned. killerchopsticks(Quote)

I like this casting a lot. Matt can play a little younger, look at Ian and Paul, so Alaric is still probably going to be in he’s 20′s. Maybe not as young as in the books, but maybe when the cast Meredith she’ll be slightly older. Either way he had to look older then the other guys on the show. Shannon(Quote)

Though I did picture Alaric slightly younger than Matt, I do think the casting people did a fine job with him. =) He’s clearly attractive and I liked im Legally Blonde so I think he’ll probably be able to pull off the role.
And as for Meredith … I’ve come to the conclusion that she probably won’t exist in the TV show, and I think I’m fine with that. I mean, Meredith was the voice of the reason in the books because Bonnie was either too childish/impulsive/naive and Elena was … well, Elena. However, Bonnie and Elena (especially Elena) are different from the ones in the books, so I honestly don’t see a point on having a Meredith. I mean, TV Show Elena IS pretty much like Meredith from the books. Personality-wise, that is – though … now that I think about it, she physically resembles Meredeith, too. Haha.

I don’t see why both Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson would make a point of publicly stating there was going to be a Meredith if they had no plans to eventually bring her in. I really, truly don’t believe they’d do that to the fans. The fact they even said it in the first place means they understood that a lot of people were disappointed.
Patience, grasshoppers – if you’ve been paying attention this far, you know the story is being stretched and manipulated to fill an entire TV season. And it’s not like there ain’t a lot going on in Mystic Falls right now. Vee(Quote)

I, too, think that Meredith will eventually appear in the show. She’ll probably first appear in the episode before Alaric, or maybe even the same episode. New student, perhaps? Anyway, I think Matt is a good choice, bit older than I imagined him, but hey, Ian is 30 and he’s playing someone who appears to be a teenager/early 20s. Anyway, I’m just excited that Alaric is definitely going to be part of the show! Now we just need some Meredith casting news. :) Emma(Quote)
