The Vampire Diaries TV SeriesIf you’ve been waiting for Nina to lay it all out there in regards to the TV series’ Elena not being blonde or a bitch, this new interview with Sci Fi Wire ought to help clear up some misconceptions. She addresses not only the physical differences between her and her book counterpart, but explains why the showrunners felt it was necessary to give Elena a personality makeover:

“And the thing about my character specifically is that she was depicted in the books as kind of an insensitive bitch, when you think about it. She was the queen bee of the high school. In order for the audience to even want to root for her, they have to like her. So they made specific changes to address that. They wanted Elena to be nicer and more sympathetic. And the physical aspect, I’m not blonde or blue-eyed by any means. I guess that just wasn’t that important to them. There was no discussion about me dyeing my hair or wearing contact lenses.”

She also touches on working with Kevin Williamson and her hopes for the show (complete with a fantastic tease for viewers/readers).

Hrmmm … sure I agree with this. One of the things I loved about book-Elena was that she *was* the Queen Bee. After so many heroines who were outcasts and pushovers it was refreshing to get a character who was confident to the point of arrogance and willing to do whatever it took to get her way. She didn’t have to learn to stand up for herself, she could already do that, so her challenges were different than most heroines at the time (it also made her dynamic with Stefan and Damon more interesting – it was less about who would win her and more about who she would choose.

I guess the execs never watched Buffy (the movie).

  • Lily

    I completely agree with you.

It still pains me everytime (almost) I see this TV Elena..

  • Emma

I’m glad they made the changes to Elena. She was just a complete bitch, totally unlikable. How could anyone fall in love with her, let alone have every dude in the series clamoring after her? I always thought Elena and Stefan were the weakest characters in the books (funny, ’cause they’re the main characters), so I’m glad to see that Elena, at least, is going to be made more interesting/likable. Who roots for the Regina George of the story?

I have to agree with you on that one. Though I wasn’t Elena’s biggest fan at first, I thought it was interesting that for once the heroine and main character of a book would be such a confident girl, willing to do ANYTHING to get what she wanted. I learned to love that about her yeah, which is why I find it a little bit disappointing that she’s not like that on the TV show. But you know, I’d sort of figured out by the trailers and interviews what Nina said about changing Elena’s personality a bit; I suppose the CW felt the need to have a female lead character that viewers could relate more than the Queen Bee and bitch that Elena could be sometimes.

The change does make sense given that the reigning vampire-loving heroine is a complete doormat.

  • Charlotte

And yet Blair (and often Serena) from GG is a complete cow, and is the heart of the show – you don’t always root for her, but she is gripping. And what about Cordelia in Buffy, as well as Buffy herself?! Grr.

Thank you. Yes yes yes. I love Elena because she is so strong willed. The whole thing is about Elena’s personality and how it changes. I fear TV-Elena will be more…flat, because she’s going to be nice from the get-go.

    Bitches get stuff done.
